My thoughts (amazing) Mass Effect L.A. Noir Heavy Rain

Yesterday I started playing this "L.A. Noir". On another forum I was on I read people say it was "unworthy" of the Rockstar name. I suspect these children went into the game thinking it would be a sandbox title of "follow the line" Grand theft auto rather than an adventure game. Thankfully I was far more open minded.

First problem, the combat feels tacked on. This is probably to appeal to dude bros who play Gears Of War and Grand Theft Auto. You get a bunch of really short, repetitive sequences of shooting people then chasing them. Over and over. It feels out of place. The detective talky adventure stuff is the good part of this game, not the action sequences.

Now dudes, this is the comparison bit. While massive jerkoff's like Bioware and David Cage put out Heavy Rain and Mass Effect titles that aspire for "mature gaming". What they actually amount to is sterile characters full of either, overly melodramatic campy dialog (Heavy Rain) or emotionless Vulcan like dialogue (Mass Effect).

L.A. Noir has the most believable characters I have seen in a video game. This has fuckall to do with the animation system (that works against it because it is weird looking) but the amazing voice work and writing. People, sound like people. Not some geeky Bioware nerd writer imagining what sex would be like for normal people and attempting to simulate it. When I play this game, it feels like these characters could actually exist. It's about as close to participating in a "TV show" as I have played in a video game.

I usually hate talky sections because they are almost always badly done. And go right to the action sequences. With L.A. Noir it is the exact opposite. This game is a new peak for voice work and writing. It's organic and feels natural.

The much talked about animation system, I don't like. It's odd looking at best, horrible at worst. Valve have better animations imo. Those look more natural for a video game than something so realistic it is off-putting.

L.A. Nior, cool dude game. Way better RPG than Mass Effect. Way better "cinimatic bla bla" than Heavy Rain.

I read the first paragraph, and decided that to continue to read would only make me angry.

@whyareyoucrouchingspock: I don't know what it is, but somehow you always manage to piss me off within the first paragraph of your posts. You have voice, I'll give you that much.

You know, for all the things that LA Noire did wrong, I consider it one of the most promising new games released in this generation.  The basic formula they had, adventure style exploration and dialogue tree interrogation, was good.  The execution wasn't quite right but the idea was great.  This is the sort of game I have always wanted to play.  A true evolution of the adventure genre.

Here's hoping another developer takes the good bits of LA Noire and runs with them to make a brand new IP.  I will buy day 1.  :)

The game would have benefited if the game elements more hidden, such as you did 10/12 right in that interrogation, we should just have to live with the decisions and cases can end with you "losing" a case. But the scoring system made me reload saves. With all said I did enjoy this game.

This game was impressive and ambitious, but Phoenix Wright is better in every way.

The open world looked neat but was lifeless and pointless, in fact, you could just skip it by having your partner drive.

I love the idea of the interrogations, but the actual system is terrible. You never knew what you were actually accusing someone of. I hit my point of frustration with it when it gave me a choice between two guys and would only let me charge the guy I though was innocent.

I may go back and play it again, but this game really just didn't work for me.

@QuistisTrepe: Yep. He can't like a popular game; otherwise he just wants to sound cool and edgy. Forget that it was primarily about L.A. Noire. All we glean from it is "mass effect blah blah blah".

PS I love Mass Effect and L.A. Noire.

Because they are the perfect storm of PC elitism, bad writing and grammar, condescension towards the reader and random references to Total War Shogun 2 as the greatest piece of computer software ever given to man. In other words, he's basically HitmanAgent47 with less conspiracy and more telling you about your dudebro hipster nihilist tendencies. Personally, I think he's topped Jay444111 in the incredulity department several times over at this point.

They could have done a better job with the pc version. While sitting several feet away I don't really notice the quility of the textures or the rather blurry effect when viewing things at a distance with in the game. Up close (with in one two feet from the screen) the game tends to look quite bad. The animation quility helps counter the poor texture quility but the fuzzy blur isn't asthetically pleasing.

i really enjoyed playing through LA noire. it was new and refreshing. it was something unlike any other game ive played. the facial animation stuff was amazing throughout the whole game. kept me engaged.

HOWEVER, after beating it roughly a year ago, with reflection, i dont find it as interesting looking back at it. the characters weren't that great, they were passable, but none of them memorable or likable. the story had up's and downs. the isolated cases were the best, when they started trying to tie it all into a big evil scheme the game started to fall apart for me.

for a noire story to work you have to be invested in the characters, and i didnt give a shit about anyone. especially cole phelps who is supposed to be our hero. but the core idea behind the game was fantastic. a crime game where you play a cop trying to solve crimes using evidence and clues rather than just shooting badguys. i loved that. investigating the crime scenes, finding the clues, putting together the evidence in my head, interviewing people and then being like "AH HA! you liar! lookie here! these panties! THEY ARE PROOF!".

i would still recommend it to most people as its a unique game that people should play. but the story and characters were what held it back from being amazing.

Yes, L.A. Noire feels like a TV show, but only because it's 'typical' of what we expect to see on TV - i.e., unoriginal. The setting, dialogue and tone are totally cliche. Call it a noir-pastiche, noir-homage, noir-whoring, but I felt like I'd seen it all before - and since the gameplay took a back-seat to the played-out cinematic aspect, it just didn't hold up as a game.

Actually you're right. I take it all back. Tv shows suck as well. Waste of time.

Cool straw-man bro. Criticising a medium for worn-out clichés =/= dismissing entire mediums.

Why bother opening a discussion about liking a game when you're not willing to confront other opinions with maturity?

Because you badly attempting to use it as a guise to attack me and thus... it is a huge waste of time? Bro.

LA Noire doesn't compare to Mass Effect because they are different games offering different story experiences. LA Noire does compare to Heavy Rain as they are both adventure games attempting to tell mature stories. Honestly, I put them in the same, exact league. I had just as much fun with both games. Both games have similar problems. Both games really made the same impact on me.
