Black History Month

So my school is having a Black History Month assembly today and they needed to get students to contribute to the assembly. What my school decided to do was to force all of the students in Advanced Drama to read poems and preform scenes written by famous African Americans in front of our entire student body. I chose to work with this girl in my class and we were assigned the Maya Angelou poem "Still I Rise".

This girl and I have been practicing it all week and I just can't help feeling a little funny saying lines like "I'm the dream and the hope of the slave" and "I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide" because I'm white. It is a great poem and all but the speaker in the poem is a African American woman and I am neither black or a woman. This girl has to say "Does my sexiness upset you?" in front of the whole school, including her brother.

I just kind of wish they let us pick what poem we wanted to read instead of making us read this one or even just gave us the option to be in this assembly or not.

No one would be upset but there is a lot of irony in it because the girl dresses like a whore and everyone is going to laugh like crazy when she says that line. I feel bad for her.

The only thing Black History month related I participated in was just going to the Chuck D. lecture at Sacramento State. They should have allowed you to do Fight the Power by Public Enemy.

I do agree that it separates people. Last year my school took the few black kids that go to my school and made them do majority of the assembly.

In middle school, we would go all out with black history month.  During the half hour of homeroom, everyday, there would be a question over the announcements that was something black history related.  At the end of the month, the homeroom with the most points won a breakfast party.

It was terrible.

You could just tell the teachers to stfu. The whole concept is just blatantly offensive IMO and was invented so white people could feel less guilty. Not that I feel guilty for what some ignorant racist bastards did though.

I would read a excerpt from Maya's" A Caged Bird Sings", something particularly brutal or moving.

I would also consider watching a clip from Speilberg's Amistad.

@DCFGS3:    (bold glitch)

White history will never need to be promoted in America in the same way.

It's important that all young Americans understand fully the evils of their forefathers, so they can prevent such things from happening again, all over the world. If there are any young black Americans that don't think the promotion of their history is important, they have shit for brains. They are the very proof that black culture has been "white-washed" and made to look dull and inferior, when in truth that's far from the reality. Black people who originate from Africa have an extremely rich culture and history. Africa has brought to fruition some of the greatest civilisations this planet has ever seen. It's thee place on the planet that European cultures raped in order to gain the very standing you see them have in the world today - Fact.  Once upon a time however, it was Africa that housed the super powers of the world.

The natural resources in Africa to this very day remain, and still the "white man" looks to bleed Africa of them.

The problem with black people in America is that they already have little or no connection to the rich culture and history they have in their lands of origin. A history which makes America's own look like feeble shit in comparison. Those intelligent enough to educate themselves, will already know much about the rich history of Nubia and the Kingdoms of Benin and Great Zimbabwe, while those dumb, are filled with crap written by white Western scholars who wish to paint history in their favour. As they always attempt to do.

White-washing has been happening since Biblical times, the heavily edited book called the Bible is prime example of this. I find it hilarious that there's no mention of the Kushite Empire in the entire Bible, the regions biggest super power of the time, and yet they don't get a single mention throughout, lol.  One has to ask, "is it cos dey iz black, white looking Jesus?"

On the flip-side, African stories which have stood the test of time and travelled throughout the ages safely, will tell you of a time when the city of Jerusalem was under siege by the Assyrian Empire. According to in the field history, for many days and nights the white Jews were encamped within the walls of the old city, running out of food and water fast. They soon found themselves in a very desperate situation with no apparent resolve... Why is there no mention of this very significant event in the heavily edited bible you see today?  It's very simple really - black people were part of the solution.

The Kushite Empire upon hearing about the Assyrian's attempts. marched towards the city in order to protect the city as a major trading post. The very word that the Kushite armies were marching towards Jerusalem, in defence of the city, drove the Assyrian's to flee in fear. In ancient times the Kushite's were very much feared, they were raised on war and had their own warrior cast, they were the African equivalent of Europes Spartans in that respect. They had a vast empire with a far reaching networks of trade. They also had a very strong history which gave them a supernatural appearance to other races  - they gave birth to the first truly black Pharaohs of Egypt, the very one's British archaeologists were "uneasy" with acknowledging once upon a time.

If you leave white man to teach the black man who he is, he will leave the black man feeling ashamed and inferior.

So...Black History Month is exclusively about the history of Black slavery in America and the civil rights movments and literature and art relating to that? Kinda makes the month misleadingly named.

Whilst I agree it is important to understand the past to avoid the repeat in the future, a lot of this stuff borders and crosses into social engineering and I generally hate that.  I don't  celebrate Australia Day, as I think of it as Invasion Day, so I am on the left.  However, I don't appreciate a Federal construct view of history being forced upon my children  and if I was American, I would feel the same way.  There is hardly balance in the teaching of these things.  I question the motives and qualifications of the people doing the teaching, left or right leaning.  I want my history taught factually, without judgement or guilt.  Schools fail to do that.

Forcing kids to do it is also normally counter productive.  They resent it and it can push many the opposite way.  My kids are aware of the awful past inflicted upon black Australians (Aboriginal), through films like Rabbit Proof Fence, but I like to balance it with how the world was then.  I don't believe in white guilt as it fails to empower blacks and perpetuates the victim thinking (although I supported the apology to the Stolen Generation - it helps move it forward).  It is very important to teach it just as History and let those with a genuine interest study it further.

Do you have a problem with reading?, where did I say anything of the sort in my last post?, where do I say that instilling guilt in young children should be the objective, and not education.

Take a look at my post again.

From a little reading on the issue, it seems Black History Month is a celebration of African American history and arts, and it seems quite racist. If it was a commemoration of the liberation of the slaves, and the civil rights movement, then perhaps such issues could be celebrated and discussed around Martin Luther King Day, and simply for a week (seriously, a whole month is a bit long). Also the issues and events should only relate to either slavery or the civil rights movement, not history or literature outside of that context.

Let's face it - "educating" young Americans about the EVILS of their forefathers is pretty much equivelant of saying "Look at the horrible things YOUR people did, don't you feel bad?"

My ancestors come from America. I'm a Canadian. I was never "FULLY" made aware of the "evil". But if I was, what good comes from it? It'll only make me feel guilty. I agree that the whole slavery thing is horrible but I am not sorry for anything because I had no hand in it.

Don't assume people from the UK are all white and have been there forever.  No offence intended.  Many people's ancestors were oppressed and made their way to the west, including the UK, to escape oppression.

If guilt is born from education of the truth, so be it. after all, It is the fools who consistently disregard the numerous lessons history can teach us, who weaken the human race and our commitment to each other. There is no better point in time to find examples of this, if you knew your world history you would know that what's happening in the world today, could have been easily avoided if certain historical texts were taught more widely, particularly in the US.

Kind of odd that they have such a thing over there in America land. Knowing about it is important but it appears to be hammered on. Guess that I am on the same page with Oldschool here.

@Linkyshinks: Wow, linky I normally agree with everything you say, but uh.. that is some bullshit right there. I didn't hurt anybody, I didn't enslave anyone I was born into a family that taught me to accept people, I have never seen people of other races as inferior, racism goes both ways, but I will not be held accountable for something that was done before I even existed.

"It's important that all young Americans understand fully the evils of their forefathers."
Really linky? Really? I don't care about what they did, I know who I am and I don't need a month dedicated to showing me that white people are evil. But the English are not free from prejudice and past sins either,

The empire took over countries and established colonies and ruled by force.
It established slave trade to work sugar plantations in the Americas.
It used opium to cause the fall of China and take over Hong Kong.
Plundered countries and their people to enrich themselves.
Massacre millions of people to maintain control.

So lets start Naughty U.K month so you can be constantly reminded of the past evils of your country.

Black History is such complete bullshit. Black people have egos as big as white people (In general). I always hated  going to my fathers house in February because the whole black part of my family would be there and just bitch and moan about nonsense involving black people. Just get over it.

I didn't hurt anybody, I didn't enslave anyone I was born into a family that taught me to accept people, I have never seen people of other races as inferior, racism goes both ways, but I will not be held accountable for something that was done before I even existed.

"It's important that all young Americans understand fully the evils of their forefathers."  Really linky? Really? I don't care about what they did, I know who I am and I don't need a month dedicated to showing me that white people are evil. But the English are not free from prejudice and past sins either,   The empire took over countries and established colonies and ruled by force. "

  •  Who said you did?
  • Great.
  • Who's asking you to feel accountable :?, not I. Where have I said that following generations are accountable?  (my post is below)

I only ask that all kids in America are educated with historical facts and truths regarding black history, simply because it's very conducive for them to formulate an opinion which has a positive bearing on who they become as individuals.

Why are you pointing out a few of Britain's crimes?, of which there are numerous, as if I would defend them, lol  The British along with the Spanish and Portuguese are the worst fuckers in history by far, their crimes dwarf those of America's. The ramifications of their actions still play out today.

Harsh history has may lessons to teach us all, it's not about feeling guilt, it's about knowing the truth and acting accordingly.  This world is fucked up already because of people in power who take the same approach as you do, they disregard what the past teaches and the continue to make mistakes that were made long go by others.

Also, please do point out the "bullshit" your referring to in my post here, and I will happily reply:

It's important that all young Americans understand fully the evils of their forefathers so they can prevent such things from happening again. If there are any young black Americans that don't think the promotion of their history is important, they have shit for brains. They are the very proof that black culture has been "white-washed", and made to seem dull and inferior, when in truth that's far from the reality. Black people have an extremely rich culture and history in their lands of origin all throughout Africa. Africa has brought to fruition some of the greatest civilisations this planet has ever seen. It's thee place on the planet that European cultures raped in order to gain the very standing you see them have in the world today - Fact. Once upon a time however, it was Africa that housed the super powers of the world.

The natural resources in Africa to this day remain, and still the "white man" looks to bleed Africa of them.

The problem with black people in America is that they already have little or no connection to the rich culture and history they have in their lands of origin. A history which makes America's looks like feeble shit in comparison, I should add.

Those intelligent enough to educate themselves, will already know much about Nubia and the Kingdoms of Benin and Great Zimbabwe, while those dumb, are filled with crap written by white Western scholars who wish to paint history in their favour, as they have always done.

White washing has been happening since Biblical times, the heavily edited book called the Bible is prime example of this. I find it hilarious that there's no mention of the Kushite Empire in the entire Bible!, the regions biggest super power of the time, and yet they don't get a single mention throughout, lol.

One has to ask, "is it cos dey iz black, white Jesus?"

On the flip-side, African stories which have stood the test of time and travelled through the ages safely, will tell you of a time when the city of Jerusalem was under siege by the Assyrian Empire. For many days and nights the white Jews were encamped within the walls of the old city, running out of food and water fast, they found themselves in a very desperate situation with no apparent resolve... Why is there no mention of this in the heavily edited bible you see today?, well it's very simple really , black people were part of the solution. -

The Kushite Empire upon hearing about the Assyrian's attempts marched towards the city in order to protect the city as a major trading post. The very word that the Kushite armies were marching towards Jerusalem, in defence of the city, drove the Assyrian's to flee away in fear. In ancient times the Kushite's were much feared, they were raised on war and had their own warrior cast, they had a vast empire with a far reaching networks of trade. They also had a very strong black history which almost gave them a supernatural appearance to other races  - they gave birth to the truly black Pharaohs of Egypt, the very one's British archaeologists were "uneasy" with acknowledging once upon a time.

If you leave white man to teach the black man who he is, he will leave the black man feeling ashamed and inferior.

They have been doing that for a long ass time. We don't need a month dedicated to black history in America. The same reason we don't need one for white people. History should be all the same at this point.

I think the standard of living is much better in USA at the moment than it is in Africa.
But what do I know, I'm undereducated.
