Overheating probably doesn't happen before a game has even started though.

The whole design. When everything just clicks together and it looks and sounds like it should. Stalker doesn't have the best graphics, but the color palette, sound design, everything just sucks you in. Then fiction improves that like the awesome little details and love put into races and tech in Mass Effect. Gameplay and a shitty story can break it of course, but those things are what I consider immersive. VVVVVV doesn't have much of a story or graphics, but it completely makes me forget I'm sitting in a chair playing a game, because everything just works perfectly together.

I remember a lot of that stuff in PC and Amiga games way before this, but what comes to mind first is Driver for PS1. I fell through the ground so many times. Soon it was like "Oh shit, wrong angle on this turn, gonna go through that wall again, fuck!"

It's scary as fuck when it happens but pretty awesome when you think about it later. I've had it happen three times. Once I "woke up" lying on my back with my arm on my stomach, but it felt like it was someone elses so I was freaking out. When I slowly started to be able to move I turned my head sideways and there was this old witchy looking lady next to me who had only one big eye that was looking everywhere, rolling and twitching. I got control of my other arm and tried to strangle her but then I fully woke up and it was just a pillow. Crazy stuff.

Even as a big Fallout fan I had more fun with Borderlands because of the splitscreen co-op. IRL co-op is the best kind of gaming to me. Without that Fallout 3 would be my choice, Borderlands can get pretty tedious alone.
