I will always remember playing the first Unreal.  After you leave your crashed ship and walk to the top of the cliff.  You see an amazing waterfall, and the music starts.  It probably sticks with me the most because I had just built my first high end machine, with dedicated graphics and sound card.  I think it made me feel justified in my purchase.

I don't usually read reviews for games that I know I am getting day one.  I already know enough about it, and don't need to validate my purchase.  I will, on the other hand read the review for a game that I notice discounted six moths later, or dare I say on occasion used.  I use reviews for information on games that I haven't been previewing.

Which side of the arms race?  Squarely in the middle...  Games of this quality will both be day one purchases.  I couldn't care less about the machine they run on!
