Arcade Fun, Arcade Depth
Prototype begins with an opening cutscene, then thrusts you headfirst into the world with all your powers. It seems like a transition from movie-to-game.. but it is a different time of day and different location in each scene. This is a pretty good indicator of what will let you down during general gameplay in Prototype, strange inconsistencies and a lack of detail. The game is at times one of the most fun and furious "arcadey" experiences I have had in a while, but as soon as the action slows down the lack of world detail can be jarring. Gameplay is incredible when engaged in combat, but outside of this it can feel as shallow as an unfinished product. It really is a shame because there are things that the game does incredibly well... a very unique story telling method which allows the player to collect components of the larger act in-game, and fun/controls which is very rarely done so well. If you are a fan of open world games it is worth checking out, most especially if you liked superhero-based experiences like Crackdown and Infamous... just don't expect the same level of character animation and world detail.
