Resident Evil

Resident Evil is a survival horror classic in which a group of special forces agents, known as S.T.A.R.S, struggle against hordes of zombies and various other mutants in a mysterious mansion as they try to uncover the truth behind the terrifying infection.

Concepts

Cutscene Equipment Mismatch

You carry a shotgun when a cutscene pops up and then you are inexplicably carrying an assault rifle. Why? You didn't even have an assault rifle on you....
Darkness

Darkness is used in games to restrict access, increase tension, or just to set a mood. Often the player has access to a light source that can mitigate its effect.
Deadly Gas

Deadly Gas is used in many games as an obstacle and usually causes the player's health to degenerate over time.
Dear Diary, I'm Being Murdered

"Dear Diary. Went to See Movie. Ate Some Ice Cream. Murdered in a horrific, mysterious way. At least I don't have to jog tomorrow!"
Dear Diary, Today I Turned Into a Zombie

Many RPGs and survival horror games have the player find diaries written by people that were slowly transforming into monsters or zombies. Somehow, they make sure to keep writing in their diary, right up until they're no longer human, so that the player can read their mindlessly violent final thoughts.
Death

The main line of distinction between victory or failure in video games, death is the process of a biological being ceasing to be alive.
Decapitation

Decapitation is the removal of the head of a person or animal.
Difficulty Level

Sometimes you want a challenge, sometimes you wanna coast.
Disease

Diseases are medical conditions that have a negative effect on one's body. Some games revolves around a disease.
Disembodied Voice

Voice actors don't always get an NPC to represent them. Sometimes voices have no visible speaker.
Dog

A dog is an animal, of which there are estimated to be 400 million of in the world. Said to be man's best friend, there's no wonder why they feature in video games.
Double Agent

A character working for an agency or organization who is, in reality, working in secret against the organization for a rival agency.

Elevators That Mask Loading Times

Long elevator rides meant to hide the game loading.
Enemies from Stasis Chambers

Games that feature enemies that were at one point unconscious in a sealed glass or metallic chamber (generally full of goo). Most of the time, the enemies break through the chamber to attack you and are activated by an outside force.
Engrish

Jill sandwiches and masters of unlocking.
Environmental Kill

Some game environments feature certain areas that allow for special kills outside a player's normal cadre of moves. These kills usually feature unique animations such as slamming an enemy's head through a television or sticking their head in a trash compactor.
Escape From Exploding Building

A situation where the player must quickly escape from a building currently in the process of blowing up. Could either be a cinematic or actually gameplay.
Evil Organization

An evil organization is a group of super-villans who are hell bent on world domination or something of a similar nature. Usually defeated by a single Spy/Superhero/Average Joe/small child.
Exploding Head

This page is about the concept of Exploding Heads. Exploding Heads come in two different forms - one, where they are used as a dramatic device (eg. Bionic Commando), and, secondly, where they are used as a weapon (eg. Alien Storm).
Exploration

Concept where everything you need isn't always spelled out for you on the map. Sometimes even the map is not there till you go explore it.
Explosion

A powerful release of energy. This energy is usually expelled in all directions very quickly, typically giving off orange or red flames.
Extreme Violence

Extreme violence pertains to excessive amounts of blood, gore, or violent acts. These include decapitation, mutilation, dismemberment, amputation, defenestration, disembowelment, torture and much more. Chainsaws usually produce the best excessive violence, while guns simply provide more blood spray.
Female Protagonists

This concept is for games where the main playable character is female.
Final Boss

The last boss you face in a game, usually representing the final climax of the game.
Fixed Camera

The fixed camera was made famous by games such as the Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid franchises. Depending on the camera set, up could be down and left could be right. Even in the current generation of consoles, games like the God of War franchise still use this technique.
Fodder Enemies

Fairly weak enemies (not specific characters) that go down in a couple shots or swings, but will keep coming in droves.
Full Motion Video

FMVs are live-action videos used in place of real-time or pre-rendered animations. Using FMV was an attempt to make videogames look "more like movies", with live-action actors speaking directly to players. The downside is that FMV requires a lot of disk space, and looks absolutely terrible by comparison.
Game Over

Game Over originally appeared in pinball machines, and later, arcade machines. When you lose at a game, it is game over.
