God of War III: Remastered Review

4
  • PS4

This re-release seems unnecessary at first glance, but the conclusion of Kratos' journey serves up a level of spectacle that remains impressive in 2015.

The sense of scale hasn't lost any of its impact.
The sense of scale hasn't lost any of its impact.

Recent years have seen PlayStation consoles lead the charge in hosting HD remasters of past hits. Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, The Last of Us, and many more have seen second lives, and the trend shows no signs of slowing (Sony recently announced the high-def return of the first three Uncharted games). While so many hits from previous generations have come back, the God of War franchise in particular seems to resurface on a more frequent basis than most. The original two PS2 games were re-released on PlayStation 3, the PSP titles from Ready at Dawn came to consoles in the Origins Collection, and the first five games were released in one package known as the God of War Saga. With this history, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Sony has gone back to the well in bringing the “final chapter” in Kratos’ journey to the PlayStation 4.

At first glance, this seems to be the least necessary of Kratos’ resurrections. The first two games are action classics, featuring a level of spectacle that benefitted from a new HD sheen. Many fans of the series didn’t own PSPs, so the Origins Collection was a great way to experience those adventures on the big(ger) screen. God of War Saga didn’t enhance any of those experiences further, but it was still nice to have the entire franchise on one collection on one console. God of War III: Remastered, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have any big bullet point to hang its hat on.

The power of the PlayStation 4 allows for some more detailed textures and a better framerate, but the PlayStation 3 original was already in HD and still looks fantastic by 2015 standards. Massive setpiece moments like the Cronos battle and the Titan siege on Mount Olympus are still breathtaking, and the variety of brutal enemy kill animations are as entertaining as ever to watch. The combat itself doesn’t reach the complexity of more precise genre entries like Bayonetta 2 or DmC, but it’s still fun to utilize Kratos’ arsenal of weapons and moves to tear your way through Greek mythology.

Taking on Cronos is one of the game's clear highlights.
Taking on Cronos is one of the game's clear highlights.

Your enjoyment of God of War III: Remastered hinges heavily on your history with the game and recent years in the third-person action genre. If you’re new to the God of War series, this entry features all of its best elements firing on all cylinders and serves as a great introduction for what it offers. If (like me) you haven’t played it in years, it’s impressive to see how well the experience has held up in terms of gameplay and production value. However, I can see how the game could be seen as a bit lackluster if you’re coming from a lot of time with more recent games like the aforementioned Bayonetta 2. Elements of God of War III seem dated now, especially the reliance on constant QTE prompts. These had started to grow tiresome by 2010, and their constant appearance in boss fights and standard enemy encounters feels downright gratuitous five years later.

Despite some aging mechanics, I still had a blast whipping my Blades of Exile around ancient Greece once again. There's something visceral and rewarding about God of War's combat that manages to strike a nerve even after a lapse of several years.

Other games see protagonists slaughtering hundreds of opponents, but few do so with as much enthusiasm and wince-worthy gore as this one. Whether you're gutting a minotaur, tearing the eye out of a cyclops, or slowly sawing off the leg of a boss, the attention to detail Sony Santa Monica puts into these kills is rivaled only by NetherRealm Studios' work on Mortal Kombat.

God of War III: Remastered can still be entertaining as hell in its biggest moments, and I’d recommend it if you’re a big fan who wants to revisit the game after several years or if you’ve never touched the series and want to see what it’s all about. Then again, if you haven't played it before and you own a PS3, you might as well pick up a cheap copy of the game on that console considering how few substantial updates have been made here.

Those that weren’t blown away by God of War III in 2010 won’t find much in this update to change their tune, but fans and newcomers might consider giving it a shot. Frequent re-releases and the lackluster Ascension prequel may have brought on some God of War fatigue, but this remaster can be a great reminder of some of the best moments in Kratos’ saga.

seems strange to not remaster the others too. For PS4 owners not having played the first two are missing out on some vital parts to the Kratos story - I presume. I haven't played any other than some parts of the very first on PS2.

I've only played the first one. I was hoping to see all 3 games remastered. This just came in from Gamefly today so I'll check it out. I'll just watch a video to catch me up on the story.

I was more impressed with God of War 3 than I ever have with the scale demonstrated in the opening. One of the strongest opening to a game I can think of. I can't decide if it's worth rebuying a game I already own and haven't played since 2010.

You don't seem to mention any reason to rebuy this if I already own it, but I can always go for better framerates and better resolution (if this game even has that). I would love an excuse to do so though.

To be confused with the 'sold my PS3 towards the PS4' market, and the definite 'majority of PS4 owners, first Sony console' market.

I don't know what to do with scores on reviews of remastered games. I assume it's based around the whole experience, and not just what's been "remastered?"

I dunno, I guess I'll just ignore the score part. I should probably do that anyway.

$40 seems a bit much for this, especially when the previous HD versions in the series were only $20. I could see $40 for the core series (1-3) on PS4.

God of War III had some incredible set pieces and played damn fine. The story kind of fell apart for me but everything else was so well done.

So, in conclusion, I'm finally gonna finish up Ascension with all this GoW talk.

They seriously didn't include other God of War games in this remaster? How many people could possibly be in the market of those who played God of War 1 and 2 but skipped 3? I know some people skipped PS3 for Xbox 360, but would it be enough to justify this remaster? Doesn't seem like it.

I honestly thought the PSP games were better than the PS2/PS3 games. The action felt sharper and the it just felt right on a portable system. I doubt that's the popular opinion, but I think Ready At Dawn had better games than Sony Santa Monica.

@thatonedudenick: @Coreus I'm pretty sure the reason they didn't remaster all 3 for PS4 is that the remastered 1 and 2 for the PS3 so they've already been HDified. Plus, the pessimist in me admits that it would probably be more work to do those first two. But i'm going to think positive thoughts and believe it's the first reason lol.

@Coreus: @christmasunicorn: The whole reason Sony used to "justify" the Last of Us remaster was basically "so many people bought PS4 that were new to the PlayStation family that we wanted to give them a way to play this amazing game." If they were being honest (and not just marketing speak) then it would have made sense to assume that many of this same group hadn't played any God of War game.

This should have been a rerelease of the God of War SAGA that came out on PS3, a great collection, I really don't understand this idea of just sorta redoing one game its just like the Gears of War Remaster why is that not Gears 1, 2, and 3? I would be all over that.

To the people complaining about this only being GoW3, the other 3 console games were already available through PS Now; not a great solution but access is there.

Well, this is around a 10 hour game, probably less since Dan is already familiar with the puzzles and combat, while Witcher 3 is a 40 hour game if you ignore all the side content. This website isn't really about reviews anymore. They seem to only do them if they can get a game done in a timely fashion, with a few exceptions here and there. Doesn't seem like anybody in on their way to completing Witcher 3 in a timely fashion, so there probably won't be a review.

There must not be a lot going in gaming right now for both GameSpot and especially Giant Bomb to review this. To me, this seems like a game very little people care to play, especially considering it's only three. Not entirely relevant, but three is my personally least favorite of all of the God of War games (though I hadn't played Ascension or Ghost of Sparta).

Also, Kratos was one of my favorite characters until three came out; he was still a mean dude, but I thought the story around him showed that he had some sympathy for certain situations, but in three, he was all out murdering and he just didn't care. I absolutely love the first two God of War games, Chains of Olympus was pretty good, but God of War 3 was one of the most disappointing games of last-gen to me.

Loved my 3 playthroughs on PS3 and this is just the excuse I need to play it again. All this moaning about whether its worth it is pointless, nobody is forcing anyone to play it. Its not like the whole dev team would have worked on it, this would have been a relatively small side project so I dont see any reason to roll out the whole "waste of devs efforts" arguements either.

Ultimately the sales figures will dictate if people want to play it again.

Reviewing remasters seems like a bad idea...

What are you reviewing here? The original game, or the quality of the remaster?

Most people use reviews as buying guides... $40 for a 5 year old game with no new features seems like a pretty raw deal, and yet, 4 stars?

The review doesn't even sound like Dan particularly recommends it as a purchase, and yet, 4 stars?

Does Dan know that at Giant Bomb it's a 5 point scale unlike GI's 10 point scale?

A remaster with no additional content or other significant changes aside from a graphics upscaling receives a 4/5? It might as well be a review for the original game.

I agree. After 5 years, I need a lot more reasons from Sony to consider paying $40 for an updated texture pack and perhaps better frame-rate? Especially when games like Dark Souls on PC get free mods like DSfix which do the exact same thing. I'm surprised the developers couldn't implement some novel touch pad QTE functionality or other way to distinguish it from the original ps3 release. Why do I get the feeling the ps4 may follow a similar trajectory to the Vita?

Besides, Ryan's review is still plenty appropriate for the HD remaster.

Problem I have with this is pc gamers get lots of resolution options. Console owners just get what the developers design the game for and later try to double dip with making you pay for a bigger resolution later on. I'm sticking with my ps3 copy it's about pride of not paying again.

Anyone that didn't play this on ps3 should consider this copy, but for me I see no point.

Yeah I always felt that it seemed like they dumped half the development budget for the whole game into that one sequence, and I played the rest of the game wishing it matched the epic feel of that boss fight.
