Halo 3: ODST Review

4
  • X360

If you like the way Bungie makes first-person shooters, you'll enjoy Halo 3: ODST.

You've got a tough mission ahead of you... but first you'll have to make it out of your drop pod.
You've got a tough mission ahead of you... but first you'll have to make it out of your drop pod.
If you're still trying to wrap your mind around what, exactly, Halo 3: ODST is, perhaps it'll help you to think of it as if  it were a PC-style expansion that doesn't require the original game to play. It uses a lot of the same technology that powered Halo 3 back in 2007, and it tells a story that exists concurrently with some of the events of Halo 2 and Halo 3. It makes some interesting changes to Bungie's battle-tested design style, but at its core, it still maintains that Halo feel. If you liked Halo 3 and have any interest in the expanded Halo universe, you'll enjoy the new things that ODST has to offer.

In ODST, you'll play as an ODST--that's Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. These are the guys that launch down from the sky in pods, and they represent some of Earth's best soldiers. But the key is that the ODSTs are still merely human. They aren't genetically engineered badasses like the Master Chief. So the characters you play as here are a little more fragile than the shielded and armored super trooper you're used to controlling in Halo games. They aren't tough enough to dual-wield weapons. They aren't rough enough to hijack enemy vehicles. They aren't strong enough to pull off that huge, floaty jump that the Master Chief has. They aren't crafty enough to collect and deploy equipment like you could in Halo 3. And they don't have health that automatically recharges when you take damage. That said, the ODSTs still have shields of some sort. It's referred to as "stamina" in-game, but it serves the same purpose as the Chief's shields and recharges when you stay out of battle for a few seconds. Your health meter--the one that gets rocked when you get caught while out of stamina--doesn't recharge on its own. To rectify health issues, you'll have to seek out medkits, which are usually plentiful enough to make health loss a non-issue. Beyond these changes, the ODSTs you'll control in the campaign are roughly equivalent to the big Spartan.

The other big change in ODST is that these guys are equipped with different helmet-based heads-up displays. The new HUD--which comes from your visor and is helpfully called VISR--comes with a light amplification option that brightens things up and enhances the edges of objects. This is handy, as significant portions of the campaign are done under cover of darkness. The edge enhancement is especially cool in the darkest areas. The lines it draws around the edges of things makes the game look like some kind of militaristic Tron arena or something. While you don't have a motion sensor, hitting the back button brings up a map of the city, showing you where you need to go, nearby enemies, and more. The map screen, also, looks really nice. The key reason for having a map--as well as an on-screen compass that directs you to waypoints--is that a chunk of ODST is played in a sort of open-world hub that links the game's missions together.

 Who is The Rookie?
 Who is The Rookie?
The open nature of the New Mombasa streets makes sense in the context of the game's story. Five ODST troops drop into New Mombasa with a Naval Intelligence officer named Dare. She doesn't really get into the specifics of the mission, and things go wrong almost immediately because your insertion pods are knocked off course when a Covenant cruiser positioned above the city jumps into slipspace. This rips up the city and sends your team's pods careening off-course, separating the crew. The game opens with you in control of a character known only as The Rookie. He immediately hooks up with the city's computers, giving you map data and navigation points that point you in the direction of the rest of your team. When you get to the proper location (usually by finding a key item, like Dare's helmet, or a bent-up sniper rifle), the game switches into a flashback. These are the game's missions, and most of them put you in the role of one of the other members of your team. These missions are linear and very much designed in the Halo tradition. Once you complete a mission, The Rookie gets new data and moves to the next spot. The juxtaposition between the quiet, nighttime city, where The Rookie can stick to the shadows and avoid a lot of combat as he moves from spot to spot and the large, loud battles that you've come to expect from the Halo series is an interesting one. Even though there isn't that much to do when you're not in an active mission, the dark, open city gives ODST a very different atmosphere from the other games in the line. The game's great soundtrack really contributes to that feel, as well.

As you work your way through the city, you may run into one of the 30 audio clips hidden there. These are designed to be a basic collectible and to give you a reason to run around the entire city, rather than just sticking to the critical path and heading from one mission to the next. The clips string together to form a fairly interesting story that's set around the time of the Covenant first landing at New Mombasa. It also gives you some insight into the nature of the Superintendent, which is a city-wide AI that subtly guides you around the city by changing video screens around town to big detour arrows aimed in the direction of your next objective or a nearby audio log. The story that plays out in these audio logs is tied to the game's story, but it features more interesting characters than the actual game does. The Rookie doesn't speak, which sort of makes him the most interesting character by default. The rest of the ODST crew chats it up, but a lot of that dialogue feels forced, with plenty of generic-sounding military talk. And the all-too-convenient romantic past between the ODST squad leader and the female naval intelligence officer doesn't bring any heat to the proceedings.

The campaign kept me going for just under seven hours on the game's "heroic" difficulty setting. Like Halo 3 before it, the developers recommend that players familiar with the series start at this setting. On normal or lower, the combat is painfully easy--which is fine if you're a novice, but won't be much fun for anyone else. On the highest setting, again known as legendary, the game becomes much more of a challenge, making it something that's best suited for cooperative play. Like Halo 3 before it, ODST allows up to four players to play via Xbox Live or LAN. It's a fun way to play, though there's something cool about the solitary nature of The Rookie's portion of the journey that doesn't feel quite right when you're rolling around with three partners.

The squad, before everything goes wrong.
The squad, before everything goes wrong.
In addition to playing the campaign cooperatively, there's also a new co-op mode called firefight. This is a survival-type mode, which puts the players in a confined area and sets them against waves of Covenant enemies. The longer you last and the more enemies you take down, the higher you score. As you clear out waves, the game turns on more and more skulls, which are the secret items that you could use to modify the difficulty in Halo 3. In ODST, all of the skulls are the same, but they're all automatically unlocked from the get-go. Firefight encourages players to hunker down and defend small areas, sort of like the Gears of War 2 horde mode. For me, though, Halo is all about shooting on the move, not sitting down and controlling a specific spot. That's probably the reason why I don't find firefight to be very engaging, especially on its higher difficulty settings.

If that was the complete package, ODST would be a pretty good expansion type of package, provided it was available at an expansion sort of price. But there's a second disc in the package that offers every bit of Halo 3's competitive multiplayer, including all of the downloadable maps that have been made available via the Xbox Live Marketplace since Halo 3's release. It's a weird offering, because I find it hard to believe that anyone thinking about buying ODST doesn't already have Halo 3. And in the case of fanatical Halo fans, chances are they already paid for one or more of the map packs when they were released digitally. The one catch is that this disc, marked "Halo 3: Mythic," comes with three maps that will be exclusive to this collection. It's a convenient disc for Halo 3 multiplayer fans to own, but it feels like something that was tacked onto the collection in order to further justify the package's $59.99 price tag... and it's something that a sizable piece of the game's prospective audience probably already owns.

They're not the Master Chief, but they have most of his moves.
They're not the Master Chief, but they have most of his moves.
Though the technology that powered Halo 3 has aged, ODST still looks quite nice for a 2009 release. That's mostly thanks to the lighting. New Mombasa looks great at night, as the raging fires around the city give the sky a red glow, while the whole area is large enough to give you the sense of being stranded in a big, enemy-filled area. The video signs, which flicker to life as the Superintendent passes you messages, have a clean design style that really adds to the game's look and feel. The daytime missions look fine, as well.

Halo 3: ODST fills in a few interesting spots in the Halo timeline, even if the characters themselves aren't strong enough to carry the narrative. But it strikes a healthy balance between new twists and more content done in Bungie's trademark style. The more important thing is that if you've enjoyed playing Bungie's Halo games in the past, chances are you'll continue to enjoy that style in ODST.

Great review but I don't see the need for the disclosure. It's stating the obvious and is nowhere to be seen in the Arkham Asylum review.

"

Oh sure, there must be a ton space on the ODST campaign / firefight disk but they still decided to put the Halo 3 pvp multiplayer (which includes forge and saved films) on another dvd instead of saving money and just packaging one. You make no sense  even putting your opinion of the series aside, which you're freely entitled to, though you're pretty juvenile in expressing it.

Halo-hate brings out the worst in people.  If I saw this quick look and review having not known what Halo is I would say it looked really good and worth a look and probably be quite satisfied when I played it, but because it's Halo everyone thinks it's cool to shit on it.

It is not cool to dislike Halo, it never was.  Halo fans are not tweenie-bopers or whatever, we enjoy quality product that bring hours of fun.  Get over yourselves, really.

You 'conflict of interest' types crack me up. You're talking about a guy who is so dedicated to reviewing things honestly that he was fired from his previous job. Get a clue.

I kinda like the custom page. Although the timing seems to be interesting considering it is sparking discussions of selling out, bias v unbiased reviews etc. Good review though. I wish this game came out on PC.

I think the anger and suspicion running rampant here is completely ridiculous.  I'm glad we're all mostly over the "was this a paid-for review?" conspiracy theory, but we still seem to lingering on the "ads on the skinned review page" issue.

In any magazine, you can bet that a featured review will get snappy page designs to match the game being reviewed.  Does that mean every game reviewed on this site should get a skinned page design?  No.  Does that mean any review with a skin is a sign of pay-to-play politics at work?  No.

Most of us know that Jeff and all of Giant Bomb are stand-up guys who value honesty, integrity and quality at a premium.  But you don't have to be familiar with their work or the image they've cultivated here at GiantBomb to know that you can trust them.  Just read the review.  It's honest about the game's high points and low points.  The review's harsher than other sites'.

Use your head, do some reading and more importantly, some thinking before making such insulting accusations.

Great review, Jeff.  I actually don't have any of the map packs, so this game is a good deal for me.

So true. Never question Jeff, he's a straight shooter. I'm sure that well before they decided to support ads on this website, that they drew up a mission statement that was clear and concise, that was recognized by not only themselves but to their advertisers, that outlined their inalienable rights to make any judgment on any intellectual property, no matter how harsh or good, regardless of their advertisers might be. It's a good sign that the Giantbomb audience is large enough to be recognized as a legitimate venue for ODST advertisement. I think Jeff's feelings are fair. I'm sure the game is fun, especially considering that he (Jeff) didn't have to purchase the game, whereas the game is probably very enjoyable for what it is, much better than most games that are released, but not your triple A title exactly. I think 4/5 stars (aka 8 out of 10) is very fair for this game.

Seeing is how I sold my copy of Halo 3 way back when, it's actually quite nice for me (or for anyone else who doesn't actually own a copy of Halo 3) because I get Halo 3 multiplayer w/ all the maps I refused to purchase back then, plus a new singleplayer, and firefight. I'd say 60 bucks is a very fair price for a person like me. However, I honestly believe they should have released two versions at two price points, one copy with Halo 3 MP, and one without @ $30. I suppose it's not surprising that Microsoft/Bungie made this poor marketing decision, because it's what I've come to expect from Microsoft: they have a terrible marketing department, especially versus Apple.

Btw, I love the Giantbomb community. Let's keep it intelligent in here, guys.

Bit disappointed that you gave it 4 stars. Mostly because I'm a Halo fan (strongly of part 1). But it is understandable. I'm looking forward to playing it and forming my own star rating in my head. It might be a 4 star rating as well.

You gave Mortal Kombat DC a 5... I still remember Jeff.

Disclosure: The game featured in this review is or was an advertised product on giantbomb.com. READ: Don't bite the hand that feeds you. How about not taking money from the products that you supposedly review in an unbiased fashion until AFTER said review is up on the site. At that point, take em for all their worth because I love this site. I just don't want to ever see the integrity(or assumed integrity) of the site compromised. That's my two cents.

I'm sorry as much as I wanna sit back and think this would have been something different along the lines of Rainbow 6 or actual strategy FPS I cant. This is the biggest rape of the consumers money I've seen in a long while, this product, although ripe with small bits of new content, is nothing more then a crummy tacked on expansion. As much as I enjoyed Halo 3's multiplayer I don't think I should indulge in this adventure simply because the campaign could have easily been offered in DLC content for a more REASONABLE price. To offer the exact same product again makes me feel like i am purchasing an EA product and thats not what I came here for. The changes to this and 2007's Halo3 are far and few and definitly not enough to warrant a full retail price even with the inclusion of Halo3's multiplayer. Why you ask? I already own Halo3 now you want me to shell out more cash for another version of it? This is nonsense now im beginning to see why so many people abbreviate Msoft as M$. Bungie you sold out on us. Oh and dont forget you get a Reach BETA code for purchasing this nonsense... Just another way for them to try and justify the 60$ price tag...

The fact that Master CHEF is not in the game pleases me. Maybe a buy.

@PolyesterPimp:  I Get your point, but you must remember the people that don't have Halo 3 (Like me). Not only do we get a game and multilayer for 60$, but we also get all of the DLC PLUS 3 new maps. When you look at it that way, it's a pretty damn good deal.

For those that are freaking out over the ads/review relation, IGN gave ODST a 9.0 and it doesn't have any skins. Jeff gave it a worse review than IGN did so unless you think IGN is bought and paid for aswell... shut up.

I would buy ODST but its much like halo 2 , 3 and the first due to the health pack shit. Anyway, I like those games but I want to buy and play games that are more exctiting and worth my hard earned cash like Uncharted 2, Modernwarfare 2, Dragon Age and Golden Sun. By the way where is the review for Uncharted 2, I know its a little early but I want a review, lord knows that Gamespot wont deliver on time and if they do the review aint that great either. I just dont see the excitement anymore from the reviewers.

I am a marketing student and i would understand people's uneasiness concerning the full page ads if it were any other gaming website or a different game developer but come on guys this is giant bomb were talking about. If this was a bought review you would be able to tell in the way he writes the article and he would have given it more praise. For me its the "quick looks" that convince me of their journalistic integrity. If you watch the quick looks you can see a full gaming session unedited (both the good aspects and the bad) and you can see the problems with the game where on other gaming sites a video review can be edited to prove any point. For Halo ODST Brad and Jeff played through a full level and pointed out mistakes in the game such as level design, health system and more. but also praised it for what Bungie did well. if you pay attention you can almost predict the score they will give any game based on how they talk about it in the QL's. In the QL's they dont praise a game for what it doesnt have because the viewer can see that it doesnt have that feature. They also dont fault a game for non issues because the viewer would be able to see that they are complaining about something that isnt a problem. they merely play a game as a normal player and point out if something is inconventient to play through. Furthermore this is Bungie were talking about here. Despite what many halo haters may say Bungie makes good games and have a passion for game development. They would rather create a good product that generates positive reviews on its own then pay every single gaming website and publication to give their games a good review. A company like Eidos on the other hand would rather spend thier money buying a good review on a crappy game (like kane and lynch) then creating a good game in the first place (except arkham assylum...that game was awsome). Overall if you dont trust the reviews on this site (which you have no reason not to) you can allways just watch the Quick Looks and base your purchasing decision on that.

I wasn't gonna get this game but then, while reading the review on GiantBomb, I saw a huge ad for it, and that tipped the scales -- I'm sold!

P.S. when i first heard that Giant Bomb was having problems advertising on the site in traditional ways (watch their PAX forum) I was hoping they would find new and innovative ways to bring advertising to the site. It was very interesting hearing their opinions on traditional marketing methods (once again watch their PAX forum) and how they more often then less frustrate the user (ie. pop up ads). I am unimpressed however with the fact that they decided to take the safe route in advertising and did what almost every gaming site does. although these advertisments arent neccesarily frustrating (other then the commercials before each video, those are a little annoying to me) I was hoping for something different. There are better ways to implement advertising on the site that are not only more effective at getting products the attention they want but also stay out of the way of the user and give your site a different image that sets it apart. By implementing different advertising methods Giant Bomb has a chance of differentiating itself from other gaming website's but for now the website looks like almost every other gaming site out there. If your unconvinced with the fact that these full page ads make giant bomb look like any other gaming website check out the front page of Gamespot where they have a full page ad of madden 09, and 1up.com where nearly half their front page is covered by a Dead Space Extraction ad. If you want to copy an advertising method, copy Destructoids. IMO they have the best approach to advertising i have seen on any gaming site. On the other hand i respect what they have done in terms of the Iphone App and the fact that they only advertise products that are video game related.

Detailed review but I (un)fortunantly don't like the Halo games as I've grown up playing PC FPS games and I never got interested in the franchise. It seemed like it was made for 14 year old boys. Saying that this review wouldn't sway me at all in buying the game but I know a good review when I see one.  Shame about the ads all over the site but I can handle it, it's only a shame for me as I'd probably rather have an other game advertised then Halo.

Great review Jeff. Don't let the people being dicks about the ads bother you (which im sure they don't since you've gotten death threats back in the day) I think they way you're advertising is awesome. The people who are interested int this game will come to this page anyways, and if it has a cool skin how is tha tnot a bonus to them. Well placed advertisments without plastering it all over the site. Good job.

God...
If this game got 5 stars it would not have been biased. It would have been a great game and thats it. Its obvious that Jeff and the crew call em like they see em. If ODST had been a five star game it would have gotten it, regardless of the ads

As an avid halo fan, I expected as much.  I don't think anyone thought ODST would set the world on fire, like Halo 3.

" Oh and something inside makes me feel like Jeff wanted to give this game a 3Star rating... but didnt because of the obvious ad's across the whole site... "
Yeah I mean it's not like Jeff was fired for being honest and not giving a game high ratings due to ads on a site or anything. . .

Oh wait. At this point, Jeff has to be one of the most trusted reviewers on the entire internet.

He might have certain preferences, but as far as honesty goes, Jeff is way up there.

I'm honestly more confused about how someone's stamina can fully recharge in 5-6 seconds...

cuz it's a videogame :o... :)

I'm tempted to just go in get this cuz I get sucked into the hype.  But then I always think back at how I played the other Halos...also getting sucked into all the hype and great reviews and coming away thinking it was nothing special.  Maybe my views will change on this one...probably not....give it another shot I guess.  One thing that always turned me off on the MP was it seemed every server I played on they had it where you could see every enemy on the radar.  I could never find any enjoyment out of that.

@Jamer91: Don't take this in a bad way, but it's pretty obvious you're a student from your last comment--you sound pretty idealistic and disappointed how Giant Bomb couldn't replace the wheel immediately after vocalizing their frustrations with advertising. I was at the PAX panel where they elaborated on these feelings with the audience, and was impressed by their stance on site advertising.

In a nut shell, they see site advertising as an imperfect but reliable source of extra income...imperfect because there will always be naysayers or people who dislike anything which they, well, dislike being placed forefront in their faces no matter how well done and reliable because if the adds do appeal to lots of people and make sense to a lot of the site visitors then they'll attract more mouse-clicks, etc.

I'm right there with you in wanting new and innovative methods of site advertising to not only fund Giant Bomb without any of the current marketing crutches but also benefit the average joe gamer on the site. Rome wasn't built in a day though; unless a lightning bolt of genius just happens to strike on our beloved but relatively unknown website (compared to the other marketing giants out there I mean), we won't see these kinds of improvements right away. Getting the site paid for takes precedence over experiments in marketing. I have faith in the Giant Bomb guys to upgrade their advertising plan as they see good ideas come along, and their current model is one of the better ones out there in my amateur eye..

Besides, the ODST adds are well done here...they aren't super flashy in your face, they're big but tastefully cut, and we aren't being inundated with stupid Flash animations all over the place. On top of all those opinions I have, they also look pretty durn good, so you muckrakers can stuff it! Not you Jamer91; you're alright.

Some comments here are really embarrassing. Many people forget this is a commercial site and has to get revenue somehow. I expected more from the GB community.

The Halo re-skin is subtle and tasteful. And it looks nice! Anyway, if Jeff wasn't biased when he gave Halo 3 a 9.5 score (!), he sure isn't now.

Just follow Roger Ebert's advice: forget the stars, read the review. If you read Jeff's review, you know exactly what you are getting. More Halo!

Full disclosure: I hate Halo. I've played lots of FPS games, and I find Halo bland and unremarkable.
