Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmares Review

4
  • X360
  • PS3

This short, nostalgic add-on is cheap enough to make it worth returning to the old mansion.

I'm getting a sense of deja vu...
I'm getting a sense of deja vu...
The first single-player add-on for Resident Evil 5, called Lost in Nightmares, lays on nostalgia for the old days of Resident Evil so thickly that it spends a lot of its 90 or so minutes situated squarely in fan-service territory. Among the things you will see in this episode:

  • A big spooky mansion, complete with grand foyer and staircase limned with lightning
  • A first-person, walking-through-doors animation between rooms
  • A diary entry containing the words "itchy, tasty"
  • A long moonlit hallway with windows that burst inward as you walk by
  • Various plates and crests, bearing the images of mythical figures
  • Jill Valentine
  • Jill Valentine playing "Moonlight Sonata" on a piano

If you played the very first Resident Evil way back when, you've realized by now that Lost in Nightmares represents Capcom's slightly cheeky effort to recapture a little slice of that seminal original game with nice high-def graphics and modernized gameplay mechanics. Though, it also seems like part of the joke that an included easter egg even lets you play this episode with the trademark unwieldy fixed camera angle that helped define the series in the first place.

Lost in Nightmares is set during a flashback you saw during Resident Evil 5, when a still-brunette Valentine and Chris Redfield assault the cliffside mansion of Umbrella Corp. founder Ozwell Spencer, before Jill and Wesker end up tumbling out a window and over the side of the cliff. The first half of this episode lets you explore a mansion almost identical to the one in the original Resident Evil, though it stops just short of actually populating that mansion with real shambling zombies for you to shoot. So the illusion is not entirely complete, but it's close.

Maybe it's time for another remake?
Maybe it's time for another remake?
The other half takes you through some sinister dungeons where you'll fight one rather burly new type of enemy half a dozen times, and match up colored cranks with like-colored podiums. Then you fight Wesker. Then it's over! It's worth noting that your character progress from Resident Evil 5 proper has no bearing on what goes on in this flashback. Nor is there even a save system, which initially struck me as ridiculous. But the episode is so short you really don't need one, especially on subsequent playthroughs when you know where everything is.

There is a short list of new achievements to gain, including 18 S.T.A.R.S. emblems to hunt down. You can also unlock Jill as a playable character (when playing single-player) and Professional difficulty level (best suited for co-op). Actually, you should always play this thing in co-op, since there are a couple of spots where your AI partner might get themselves killed, sending you back to the last checkpoint. And there's a modified version of the Mercenaries score-attack mode that features a couple of new characters, if you didn't get your fill of Mercenaries already. But the new story episode is the real reason to get this add-on.

Capcom made the right call pricing Lost in Nightmares at $5 on both XBLA and PSN. It's short and a bit thin on content, but what's there is pretty, well-produced, and a satisfying if slightly silly curiosity for anyone who remembers the first Resident Evil even a little bit fondly.

I enjoyed Resident Evil 5, it was a thorough action game. However, when i played this short add-on, it simply made me want to pop the GameCube remake of the original in. There's something enticing about the Spencer Mansion, and playing this made me miss what resident evil WAS at one point.

I think it would be interesting to see the T-Virus/G-Virus/T-V Virus/Las Plagas in a more populated place. I loved RE3 for that; they had other survivors in a city that's been destroyed by the T-Virus. It would be even more effective now without RE3's technical limitations.

Isolated villages and deserted areas are great, but I would love to see the impact of all this on a metropolitan area.

I played through the DLC on Friday and I have to admit that while it's pretty damn short it was really good fun to play (and in my eyes worth the whole 400MS points) and I guess when they release the second one it will be like having a full directors cut of RE5.  Also the Easter egg is brilliant

I think they (capcom) need to look at what made the first 5 games work (IE RE0, RE, RE2, RE3 and RE CV) and then semi re apply it. Drop the fast action game play (keep it co op for it  if you want to join up with a bud locally or online) and then return the single player mode to basically one person and not baby sitting some AI who may have escaped a retard center.

This is my first comment ever.  I would have lurked for the rest of my life, but Vinny's line about the DARPA chief just threatened to get my internet cut at work.  Thanks!

If you have a buddy to play with, mercanaries is the real reason to get this expansion. Hell, mercanaries is the real reason to own the entire game of resident evil 5.

Because that's the genre... if you want to play in a city my not try another of the nine billion games out there?.. Part of the reason why people don't like this game is that it's too modern. This expansion is exactly what I'm looking for, myself being a big Resident Evil fan. "
Well im a Resident Evil fan too but id like to see something completely new. Resident Evil was best in the past. It's being recycled over and over. Let's see something new that can revolutionize the  Resident Evil experience. "

Jeez, give Capcom a break. They already reinvented and revolutionised the series with RE4... then they added split screen co-op for the first time in any RE game in RE5. I agree that RE6 needs to mix things up a little (little less action, little more puzzling), but I've never quite understood why Capcom keep getting so much flack off people for not trying anything new in this series.

Resident Evil has changed it's formula way more than alot of other franchises I can think of (Halo, God of War, Silent Hill, Devil May Cry etc.)

Reading this only makes me want to play the RE1 remake for the Gamecube, man I loved that game. RE5 was kinda bland, was just more of RE4, but not quite as good. they tried too hard to make a modern third person shooter but without going all the way, I can't move and shoot? c'mon, it's not like Resident Evil relies on suspense anymore, just give it up.

@Garfield360UK: I dunno if anyone has answered your inquiry yet, but the bonus content is only gonna be on the disk for the PS3 version. The 360 version just comes with some voucher codes, so if you've already got RE5, there's probably not much point in swapping for the new edition.

Pretty good deal for only $5.  Yea sure I would have like a few zombies thrown in (but i'm guessing this might be after the zombie thing), but in the end it was a fun challenging episode.  I also really enjoyed the darker feel...  I mean I enjoyed the very sunny India feel, but it was really nice to see the darker feel with this DLC...  I'm just hoping the next DLC chapter is as good as this one.

I am just wandering if anybody knows whether this is on the disk with the gold edition or whether its one of those code on the manual affairs where you download it with the code in the box?

Also is the versus mode included with the Gold edition and any other content?

Thank you. Good review and gave me a good impression of what to expect.

If Capcom used something like conventional Gears of War-style controls, RE5 wouldn't be frantic at all. I'd go even a step further and say that RE5 wasn't as frantic as you make it sound. I really don't agree with your opinion that RE5's controls were broken, rather, they added to the good times I've had with that game (artificial as it may be). Also, claiming that "that's how it is" is contestable since different people had different experiences with the same controls. As such, it is not how it is, but, instead, you feel you had a poor (or less than optimal) experience with this game because of its controls. And that is totally fine--I just had a different (more positive) experience. I do agree that story-wise it wasn't very memorable.

Hey, I miss games like the original Resident Evil.  They controlled just fine, too, and they don't really exist anymore.  But I'd hate to see Resident  Evil 6 be anything other than an RE5-style co-op shooter.

I already have an S-rank in Lost in Nightmares.
Or is it Linger in Shadows? Dammit that's right. And they have almost identical cameras too.
Interesting that no full game title in the database has "Nightmares" plural.

I'll be honest, I chuckled when Jill picked the lock on the front door and for 5 bucks, this seems alright. However, it certainly goes to show just how kinda retarded the RE series is. You pull giant levers to unlock doors, people hide cranks in safes and you put crested slates into doors? Also, the AI is still terrible, having 2 people is pretty useless if the partner can't even flank enemies but instead is glued to you and stands in your way.

Looks like they're really starting to pay attention to what the fans want... surely they are ready to take the series back to it's roots for the next installment, needs a good overhaul... but do we a have to wait five years for it!
