I remember sitting there stunned for a second when the first sprite-based minion begged for his life. For some reason I found it to be one of the most amazing things I had ever seen up to that point in my childhood.

@Grimhild: That's how I felt about the bullet holes. I would spend upwards of minutes drawing simple shapes on the walls with the MP40.

Much of my taste in aesthetic is directly influenced by ROTT. Fog, inexplicable geometry, a guy yelling "Here, catch! Here, catch! Here, catch!", dog snouts... all thanks to Apogee.

The level design in this game is astonishingly bad.

This has gotten me excited and horrified for the Doom 3 re-release which comes with the first two games. I'll be giving this a go for the first time in a while but certainly not on Ultra-violence. Pre-canned Brad near the end was amusing.

Excellent. Loved the energy level on this one. Even towards the end as Brad began to waver, they kept it oddly engaging.

Yeah, Doom 1's and Wolfenstein 3D's level design did well with the limited tech, it's just Doom 2 that's notoriously bad. It had pretty much all the traits of an hastily put together sequel. It's only memorable addition was the super shotgun, and I think it added a few new map triggers that the mod community made great use of - but the core game is downright bad.
