I loved Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, but that's one of the worst missions in the game. If that's how they marketed it, no wonder no one remembers it.

I wonder why LucasArts chose that one to show off?

I love this series. Demo Discs were such a cool thing when you look back. I played so many weird games that way. Also I like the time capusle aspect of it.

Superman is an unstoppable force that can fly around the Earth in minutes. His very existence changes the way world conflict and crime even works. He's also an American, and the US knows that controlling Superman is the single most important thing in the world theater. Forget mutually-assured destruction, Superman can shut down and retaliate against a nuclear strike from anywhere on the planet.

In other words, Superman is a Metal Gear.

why did Drew play Halo that much? Both Dan and Jeff was telling him they were not interested in watching anymore and most of it was just Dan and Jeff shooting the shit, which is fine but I wish Drew thought about making the video he is making entertaining and not just playing Halo cause he likes it.

As a major comic fan, I like Superman. He's probably my fave. In my brain, if you like Trek, and especially if you like TNG, that's pretty much what Superman's about, not perfect but showing a better way.

And to be clear, while Batman is great and his villains too, judging Amazo and a whole lotta [adjective] Supermans as lame when Batman's top 5 probably goes some order of the Joker, Riddler, Catwoman, Penguin and Two-Face seems equally crazy.

Oh well opinions on the internet and all.

@bill_mcneal: Really? i played it on GameCube and I thought it had the best controls of any console FPS -- to the point that I can't enjoy Halo, or any other console shooter, because they don't control like Timesplitters 2. I need that limp-wristed gun hand, I guess. To this day, I can only play mouse and keyboard if it ain't Timesplitters.

Yeah, personal preference and all but I absolutely hated the control scheme. I'm sure if I tried it again today I'd probably be better at it.

So you guys mentioning blurays and steel wool made me realize that, as somebody that bought a fair amount of used PS3, 360, and Wii games in the last couple years, I have never once had a PS3 game not play. Even if they look beaten to hell and back, no problems. Ever. Not even once, in my entire time owning that console. Can't say the same for the other two consoles.

So, I realized I have both a 360 and PS3 copy of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, neither of which I bought myself or actually want. I also have steel wool. I figured what the hell and scratched up my PS3 copy, and it worked fine for the hour or so that I played the game despite looking like a toddler made of knives got hold of it. I'm thinking this one may be true guys....

I almost wrote the same, but then again, that's probably because I've seen this level played a dozen times and I've played it at least 5-6 times myself, so obviously it was bit boring to me...and I can't really blame Drew, Halo was the shining start in this pile of (entertaining to watch) garbage. They also still looked at everything else on the disc, so eh.

I also need more frequent Demo Derby in my life. Besides spotting some terrible game in GBE Playdate, seeing a new DD always brings a smile to my face.

Man these early Xbox games seem pretty rough today.

Edit: Also it's kind of amazing how there are a grand total of two companies listed in any of these games that still exist as independent entities today (Microsoft and Ubisoft) alongside Bungie who became independent afterwards. The rest were either purchased and then shuttered (Eidos, Lucasarts, Acclaim, Universal Interactive, Sierra, and kind of Free Radical) or purchased and then became a division of a larger company(Activision, Sega, Namco, DICE, IO Interactive, and Crystal Dynamics). And some just went out of business entirely. People talk about the "middle tier" titles that we lack today and I think this video really shows why. Out of 20+ companies whose games are credited on this disc only half still remain in any form, and most of those are just parts of a bigger company. Look at Activision Blizzard. They are made up of the remnants of Vivendi Universal Interactive, Sierra, Blizzard, Activision, and several other smaller companies. Square Enix these days includes not only Square and Enix but Eidos, Taito, and several others alongside developers like IO and Crystal Dynamics. And Sega Sammy contains not only Sega and Sammy but Atlus and various other companies. When dozens of companies are combined into only a handful you get fewer games.

@danryckert To answer your question about Blu-rays, they are significantly more scratch resistant than DVDs and/or CDs. I've been working at movie rental place for a while (yep, one of those) and people can't take care of discs for shit, yet BDs seem to come out relatively okay compared to DVDs.

But as far as steel wool goes, don't try it. It's much better, but not impervious to damage.

I bet the reason Max Payne didn't display is because it wasn't compatible with the component cables. They wouldn't have expected anyone to use them in 2002, let alone on a demo disc.

Timesplitters 2 brings back great memories, the controls may not hold up any more but it did so many things right that even modern shooters today have trouble with - 60fps, 2 player co-op, 4 player split-screen multiplayer with bots, create a game mode/levels & fully remappeable controls.

Man if that Halo Demo was released today, it would be packaged and sold as a "prologue" or some BS. Also so sad to see 2-player coop on there, RIP split-screen :'(

Man I really love that Xbox dashboard. When I booted up that console for the first time it looked so cool and futuristic.

Also as a graphic designer I'd just call those "bullet points" since thats what they are. Maybe "nodes" but thats too vague, I mean they're bullets like you use in presentations.

The PS2 interface sucked style-wise.

Yeah, I can see Max Payne 1 & 2 being kinda hard to play with console controls, it quite heavily relied on being able to aim quickly and accurately. But maaan they were fucking amazing games and they still hold up absolutely perfectly even now, MP1 still plays extremely well even now and even the visuals don't look nearly as bad as many games from that era do, mainly because pretty much all textures were just made from photos.

Oh my. I did not know how much I missed Timesplitters. Timesplitters 2 is probably the shooter I got most skilled at. I am normally not a big shooter guy and it shows in my performance. But this game I knew inside out. Lots of time and few games will do that. I do not know about a Kickstarter though. I think that the space for shooters in general is pretty crowded still.

Batman has some relatively crappy villains all in all. I think Spiderman has more interesting villains and Venom would probably be considered Spidermans arch nemesis for a long time since he knew his identity.

I hope with Metal Gear Scanlon (sorta?) wrapped up we'll see these more frequently. Jeff joining in really makes them though and I don't know if him having to be available limits the schedule for them. I hope it doesn't.

Also if Drew wants to do Metal Scanlon Rising post whatever they intend to do to finish off MGS5, I'd be down for that.

Holy shit that review section was the fucking wooorst, holy shit. From the presentation, to how everything was moving in that screen to the actual writing in there. They say how Max Payne has "crap-tacular" writing and yet they apparently saying "crap-tacular" is good writing. And also, they got the developers and publishers of Max Payne there compleeeeeeetely wrong.

Craptacular writing in Max Payne? I thought it was commonly agreed that the two first games were some of the best written action games of the era. I've never tried the console ports, but for me the PC versions are classics.

You want a comfortable system menu, the XBMC theme that ripped off the 360's blades. I was saddened to see that particular one had long since gone into disuse when I tried messing around with a Kodi-utilizing Fire TV.
