Endurance Run: Chrono Trigger - Part 12

Giving up on a boss so you can load your save is not very Endurance Run, duders.

As far as I know, they started recording a few months ago. Not sure if thats correct but it would make a lot of sense.

Considering they don't seem to understand the game very well, I think it's to their credit that they're getting through it as well as they are without resorting to just brute grinding.

They began recording in late October, and recorded several episodes per day. Typically about 3 will be recorded on one day.

I feel bad for people giving advice, who are unaware of this fact.

@gladspooky: They actually spoke with the old man in town who gave them a hint on how to stop Masamune's ultimate attack, but they failed to make the connection because they're not really paying attention.

I disagree with this. I'm no video game expert but talking to NPCs always gave you the solution to progress through the main story. I think you will have to give an example of the game giving no direction.

Why is someone so good at twitch gameplay (like fighters) navigate the menus like an elderly person using a computer? Ugh.

I got this game recently on iOS and with the really quite slow scrolling when you're trying to select powers, I got my shit ruined so badly the first time. The second time around I spammed ice sword over and over, with the third character healing and that did the trick surprisingly easily. I was using Bucca/Barle/Brono for my party and I did have magic on all of them. I actually finished this game the first time, many years ago, without having magic for anyone beyond two characters - Barle and Brono. How I managed to accomplish that I'm not sure, but it wasn't pretty and it probably took forever.

Edit: And in fairness, I actually did not connect wind slash with being able to stop Masamune's ultimate attack. I just trashed him with hasted Brono + Barle with ICE SWORD over and over. Doing around 530ish damage repeatedly and very quickly did the trick really easily. It's perfectly possible to brute force your way through the game, especially if you kill absolutely everything you encounter like I do.

I got stuck at this part too. I talked to Brog before I got the Hero Medal and then I was just completely lost.

Yeah I did the same thing and ended up spending a long time trying to figure out what to do. Partly because I did things completely backwards and went to Brog first, then ended up wondering why he wouldn't join my party. So I spent ages killing things in that forest until I got bored and went to the "correct" path in the mountains. Then I got the hero medal, but having already talked to Brog with no success didn't put together that is what I had to do after that. So I got stuck for quite a while there until I just went back to him out of boredom.

Still loving this :) I just want them to do longer episodes! 30 mins is to short :(

Why aren't they buying any items? They have so much money!

Ryan sounded so disinterested during the boss fight.

They're doing better than I did on my first playthrough...but I was eight years old.

After watching 12 episodes of the Endurance Run, I have to say that I don't like the duo of Ryan and Patrick. Ryan is good and Patrick *can* be good, but something about the combination of the two brings out the worst of both. I just don't think they play off of each at all, and the videos usually resort to them just trying to find any bit of dialogue or scenery to try and riff on.

I like how Patrick said the game seems fairly directed as they're walking around trying to figure out what to do next. Oh, shenanigans.

Is there any reason why these episodes are only 30 minutes?

Also Davis sounds so bored doing this ER

Again, would not have Ryan heal my butt in a dungeon.

It's pretty simple why it's not working: They sound bored as shit playing the game. The other ER worked so well because the guys seemed like they legitimately wanted to march through/experience whatever bullshit the game threw at them. I don't now if that style can work on a game that is universally praised as one of the best of its genre.

I'm still convinced they play terrible and pretend to be retarded on purpose. They are smart ass dudes, no way simple concepts that I understood fine when I was 10 are going over their heads.

Good progress has been made I think. They learned that attacks don't have to be made in order and that bosses could counter attack. I also noticed trying different techs to check for any weaknesses/resistance. Once the whole Bucca (and incoming party members) needs to learn magic from Spekkio thing gets cleared up we'll really be truckin.

I really think they should switch from 'Active mode' to 'Wait mode' since Ryan uses way too much time choosing techs.

I have never played Chrono Trigger. My introduction to JRPGs was FF7, and I find it just as painful to watch as the "elitists." Back when they got magic, I was thinking "why don't you take your other party member to see the guy like he suggested" and I immediately thought of it again when they swapped her into the party. These guys seemingly have 10 second memories, addled by too much drinking and pot. ;) Then there's their complete ignorance of boss dialog that is providing obvious hints about counterattack patterns and such. Maybe someone who has never played any JRPG I could forgive, but these are genre tropes and both of these guys have had plenty of exposure to JRPGs.

You're right. They sound like they're being forced to play through the game and aren't enjoying it at all.

Ryan seems to be pretty good at checking for hidden entrances and stuff. I think they will find that entrance ok!

I hope you're right, because I can imagine them approaching the bush from the front - failing to interact with it in any manner - and then just leaving perfectly confused (instead of going behind it, which is what it wants you to do). We'll know tomorrow!

My ONLY hope, despite the way they're playing right now, is that they bring new party members to the End of Time to get their respective elemental magic.

You guys. Techs are learned when you have tech points and the two characters are working together. How could you learn ice sword without Barle, who has ICE? Sillies.

The only thing that kinda bugs me is Patrick's constant "video game" mantra. Ja, we get it. It's a video game.

It is beyond me that Ryan has been playing games for ... 25 years?  And this game is beating him.  This rather simple, accessible game is throwing too much information at him.  Not even complaining about the entertainment they're delivering, I'm just actually baffled that this rather straightforward SNES RPG is beating these two guys who have devoted their adult lives to video games.
 
If you wonder why games go to great lengths to overstate the next objective, why they will spend time panning over the direct route you have to take, why they draw arrows right on your HUD or give you puzzles and then explain that it's a puzzle and then solve the puzzle for you... this is why.  Imagine the data they get back from focus testers, people who haven't been playing games for a quarter of a century.

I take back what I said before.. you know.. the fact they aren't playing totally awesomely is the only thing really making this endurance run interesting. There's at least some suspense like this, ya know?

It isn't a matter of who is better at video games, Ryan or Patrick, both are to blame for that first Masamune fight. Ryan not knowing what an active battle system means, and Patrick telling Ryan to give up...when the party was revived and healed. Double fails....but keep on trucking.

@Brodehouse: BAHAHAAHAHA, people were all sorts of mad when I shared this exact same opinion a couple of episodes ago. I wonder if you have a lot of hurtbutt coming your way, or if people are actually coming around...

Not that I don't love Ryan and Patrick, but I don't think this game is just "beating them" (although it is my personal opinion that Ryan is terrible at games), what I think is happening is this: they don't care very much about this segment.

Seriously, it seems like no effort has been made to remember anything about the game whatsoever. I mean, when Jeff/Brad were playing Persona 4, they got confused sometimes after taking a week or two off, or whatever, but never anything as bad as this.

I mean, I get not knowing to use slash on the energy-storing Masamune - that's pretty obscure, even if they did talk to the guy who gave them the hint last episode - but COME ON GUYS: I was 8 when I played this game the first time - 8! - and I had no trouble understanding that duel techs require two people, or that Ice attacks might require the lady who can cast Ice spells. I can't IMAGINE that they're not competent enough to get that stuff. It has to be that they're just not reading pretty much any of the dialogue boxes.

It's a tad frustrating.
