The Giant Bomb East team gathers to talk about the week in video games, their lives, and basically anything that interests them. All from New York City!

Hey all,

Video versions should be up soon (still processing).

Also, here's one of my favorite Ryan videos (I mention it on the show today) and also one of my favorite trips from my time here. A lot of good memories: Giant Bomb Travelogue: Liverpool

I've found myself still mimicking this one word thanks to Ryan because it's without a doubt the best way to say hi.

You know what you look like? You look like a game programmer, who in his off-time, plays saxophone in a ska band. That's EXACTLY what you look like.

Uh uh uh uh uh

Ryan was wonderful, and it's strange to realize that a lot of folks didn't get to see his contributions. Luckily his legacy is all over this site.

Also, to the crew, take some time off. You absolutely need it. Even if you can't fly out anywhere, just take some time to unplug and decompress. I personally felt guilty taking time off because I've been lucky enough to work without an interruption this year, but just use those days and get away from it all now and then.

Ryan's frank deconstruction of Avatar the movie is something I think about a lot, both because its hilarious and because it made me think a lot about the stuff I watch/play in a different light. I regularly think of "We had a whole lot of money and we used it" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_xcX3pYaXY

I was in my early teens when I discovered Ryan. I had just moved to a foreign country where I was very insecure. Listening to Ryan and the shows he hosted helped me get through the days, even though I struggled to understand everything. I went onto pursuit a career in journalism with the focus on video games, much thanks to Ryan and he’s very kind, informed and as Vinny said in the show – calling out bullshit style of attitude. Never met Ryan, but I called in to the Big Live Live Show Live where we talked about the soundtrack of Harvest Moon for the SNES and even that short little showed how incredibly kind and wholesome he was, even when the caller stuttered and didn’t have a clear question. It’s weird how you can miss someone you never met but Ryans stuff I still go back to every now and then. I also realized that I totally say “Oh God” all the time, because of him. Fuck, Ryan Davis. <3

There were so many moments from Ryan that made me laugh so hard. I almost got fired from an admin job because I was laughing so hard at him and Vinny making fun of Peter Molyneux's balls. However my favourite moment might just be this one. It was done so well that you'd think it was scripted out. From the set up, the going back and forth, to the out of nowhere pay off. It always brings a smile to my face when I think about it.

Gosh I still vividly remember the day I learned of Ryan's death, absolutely gut wrenching.

Huh, I didn't even know the anniversary was here already. Funny thing is, last weekend I bought a bottle of Eagle Rare (never tried it) because the people over at the bourbon subReddit are always going ape over it.

Tonight's as good as any to crack it open, I suppose.

Fuck, Ryan Davis.

Though it's trivial, I sometimes think of his loss in relation to video games. It baffles me that we saw the launch of new consoles, and he wasn't here to experience them with us. Hell, this Ryan-less generation of the Ps4 and Xbox One is coming to a close already. They really aren't lying when they say time isn't slowing down for any of us. Miss you Ryan. Such a cherished and loved guy for some many obvious reasons.

Stay strong, stay healthy, and stay safe out there duders!

I have a bunch of Favorite Ryan memories... but one of them is from an episode where Patrick tells as story about getting skunked... or the Dog got skunked? I don't remember; Patrick goes on to detail the steps of getting rid of the smell and the Tomato Juice Shower he has to take... Vinny asks "well, how'd you get it to go through the shower head?" or something to that effect... and there is a few moments of silence as no one can tell if he's serious... and Ryan just BURSTS out "HE POURED IT OVER HIS HEAD, OH MY GOD!"

I don't know why that's my favorite moment... I just remember laughing uncontrollably, and it's one of the few bits that I remember so vividly.

Also, I have a pet rat (a few actually) and I named him Taswell after the greatest human I know of. I posted these pictures in the FB group and thought i'd share them here as well. His passing was one of the ONLY 'Celebrity' deaths that effect/affected me... and it also made me make sure to get tested for Sleep Apnea, and eventually get a CPAP machine. RIP big guy, we miss you and we love you... here's a cute Rat named Taswell:

@vinny - That exact video came to my mind as soon as you started mentioning what time of year it is once again. Here's 1 that also always comes to my mind:

If there was one thing I could say about Mr. Davis, it was would the pure unfiltered personality he showed to the world.

I say this as someone who was working as a Janitor when this video went up: 110% respect for Mr. Davis taking the moment to properly dispose of the pie after the gag failed to fully realize itself down the hole. Saved someone from suffering a moment of anger and resignation of finding that pie to have to clean up.

<3 Ryan Davis, we are poorer for the lose and strive to make and be part of a world he'd love.

I wasn't a follower of the site or even a listener to any of the podcasts at the time Ryan died, but as someone who was on the internet and interested in videogames, I can remember the time when I heard about it. So much of a surprise. It seems trite to say it this way, but the only way I can is to say it felt like being somewhere else in the wasteland and suddenly being made aware the town of Megaton wasn't there anymore. I've watched a lot of videos with Ryan in now(Including the Liverpool journey, which is very good), and have my own personal attachments to the stuff he made in his life, but I have a very strong echo of how his passing left such a sudden and dramatic impact on a whole lot of people. Heart goes out to those who went through that moment close-up.

Also Vinny neeeeeeeds a break. I have no way of getting this to happen and no understanding of how him being avail/unavail affects the running of the site. But.

Hey Vinny. I have a degree in Gender, Sexuality and Culture and I'm working on my PhD. You're alright at this stuff. You do something a lot of people don't with your coverage: you're aware of your own ego. You are very good at recognising how little insight you or anyone has on these individual cases. I think a lot of reporters treat situations like this as an opportunity to prove their own righteousness. No one individual can get their head around all of these issues without leaving room for doubt. I think it is important to make these stories known without insisting on a singular narrative. Keep up the good work.

Vinny, You and Ryan's quick looks of both Harry Potter and the half Blood Prince, and The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav, both of which have recently hit on the "this day in giant bomb history" queue, are my two absolute favorite quick looks on the site. You and Ryan had an amazing chemistry together and I miss him with you. Love Ryan Davis.

"It's called ABC..." Always loved the After Burner Climax quicklook, it's short but so much fun banter in it. How Ryan tries to hold it after doing his joke at around 5:25 always makes me laugh so hard.

Vinny, preach on about the kid time bleeding into "my" time. I'm getting a bit less sleep these days, just so I can get some alone time relaxing.

On Ryan Davis, I came along after he passed, but I have this distinct memory of a friend of mine being devastated when he passed. I remember being confused that he was so broken up about someone he had never meet from the internet passing, but now I know why. You all do a great job of keeping his memory alive, through the site of course, but also through sharing all of your stories with him.

Ryan was the funniest guy who just kept things going no matter the circumstances. I strive for that quality in myself and will always look to him as the gold standard.

I can't think of *one* singular Ryan moment; there are too many happy memories I have of him that will live on and on.

Like many others I just want to quickly chime in that Ryan was a joy and I do miss his presence on the site very much. I discovered Giant Bomb at a fairly low point in my life and Ryans intoxicating enthusiasm was definitely a big factor in helping me get over a hump in my life. Thanks Ryan.

I'll be honest and say I wasn't a big fan of Ryan Davis back in the day, but I did respect him for how real he was as a man and how loyal he was to his friends. So when I heard he died, I was just as surprised and upset as many others. I'm sure he is proud of how far GB has grown and remains one of the best places to go when it comes to video games and an inviting community.

Around this time of year, I often rewatch the oft-forgotten but never really lost after hours stream from the Whiskey Media days. Ryan, Jeff and co. are three sheets and just living their best life. It also birthed the best laugh I have ever heard Jeff make in his life. Just remember "She got a penitentiary body".
Here's the stream in full:

Ryan passing was the only death of a person i didnt know that made me cry

Same. Hell, there have been people I did know who died and those deaths didn't hit me even half as hard as Ryan's. It came completely out of nowhere and...it just snatched the soul right out of me. I still haven't been able to go back and listen to the Bombcast where they had some of the old Gamespot crew join them and shared some of their memories of Ryan.

There are just so many wonderful Ryan moments. The one that immediately springs to mind is the Quake TNT with Ted's Cosby impersonation. Ryan's laugh...fuck, just that pure impish glee to his laugh killed me. Whenever Ryan laughed, it was impossible to not laugh along with him. (Which is why it rings true when Vinny said that he had a way of calling you on your bullshit and cutting you down while still making you laugh.) The man seemed to have an inexhaustible wellspring of joy about him, and I really miss that more than ever these days.

I appreciated the Muppet talk. Believe me, we Muppet fans aren't crazy about Disney's handling of the franchise. The first film with Jason Segel was cute but the TV series was very ill conceived.

There's a new short form unscripted series coming to Disney+ so we'll see how that goes. It looks like they'll be letting the puppeteers improv a lot so it might be fun.
