Mailbag: Giant Bomb Mailbag: El Jugador Edition

El Dodgy Kong es muy grande!

What's in the mail? Is it an old T-shirt? A lunchbox full of rusty knives? Video game treasures? Canadian energy drinks?

Terrific, I play all my games in the office through it, which is helpful for the rest of the office, since my shit hearing requires I crank my games way the eff up. My Sennheisers sound great through it.

That gadget gangster site has some other neat projects on it. One is The SIDstick. It's basically an mp3 player....but instead of mp3s, it plays SIDs.

The C64's soundchip is awesome. I don't think this device have a actual SID-chip installed, so the sid-player is emulating the soundchip, and thus basically no different than any SID-player you can get for the PC.

I believe the only way to get SID-chip's today is harvesting them from old C64's. Some people has done this to fit the chip into soundcards or custom synths for music production.

Edit:
Didn't actually know there was a version of Bionic Commando for C64, but I just did a simple search on youtube to compare the music of the 2 versions.

NES version
C64 version

...to me it's pretty apparent which sounds more awesome.

I still have a NES knockoff that is basically the same type of circuitry but lodged into a N64 controller. The catch with mine, however, is that there are a few games in there, and molded into the controller is a gun barrel and a Famicom cart port. That's the only way I have of using my three Famicom carts, sadly, as they keep falling off from moving the controller.

I read the title as "El Jungladore", thinking it was a Spanish version of Jungler. It still turned out well but.

Man, it'd be awesome if one day in the future we can have a 360 or PS3 as small as that. I'd carry them in my pockets.

What a weird 'platform'. I'm so glad there are people out there still making and experimenting with things like this though. This is essentially where video game development began: With some people tinkering away to make something they enjoyed.

@Hailinel
I agree its another "baby step" from the classic controller, but if you baby step into copyright infringement then you baby step into copyright infringement! For the record I'm actually very happy this "classic" controller is coming out, I would not have played monster hunter with the wii controls, i hope more good games support its use, my whole point is not anti Nintendo, but that hopefully Nintendo wont be hypocritical and sue this guy for an OLD controller design.

Anyone who says this is not a Sony rip off... Well why does the Nintendo "classic" controller have analog sticks in the first place? (its a rhetorical question; i know its to play a wider girth of games on it, but i am saying because its called "classic" why have the sticks?). You can hook up a gamecube controller to the Wii if you need that for N64 or Gamecube games,  I always thought it was odd they called it "classic" with the 2 analog sticks when no Nintendo controller EVER had 2 symmetrical analog sticks much less right where Sony had them.... (Again is this controller classic Nintendo? Nope! Its a classic PS2 controller set up, but not Nintendo). No Nintendo system controller ever had the analog sticks in the perfect symmetrical spots like the ps3/ps3 controllers do, i would have to think that's a design copyright by Sony... Nintendo always favored one real stick, and oddly placed extra sticks. The only thing keeping them from being sued I bet is that it doesn't have 4 shoulder buttons right?

Most systems have very visually identifiable controllers, and anyone who's ever held a ps2 controller (and this is being made for a port of a ps2 game) knows this is not a Nintendo design. If you blanked out the writing on this new Nintendo one, and asked 10,000 people at an electronics store what system it was for, 9,000 would say "a Sony system" because of the signature design, 800 would say "no idea", and 200 would say "Nintendo" because they notice the shoulder buttons :). I'm just saying Nintendo shouldn't be angry about ITS controller design being used by THIS guy when its ripping off the design of other peoples. And really the basic Nintendo controller is a d-pad and 2 buttons, that's pretty basic design.....

Makes me think of Machinae Supremacy. They are a sweedish band that call themselves SIDmetal... since they are metal + Chip-tunes with a SID chip. Pretty awesome.
