Giant Bombcast 05/10/2016

We've gathered 'round the microphones to see Nathan Drake off into the sunset (again), chat about the Overwatch beta, ponder Gearbox's next move, puzzle at shooter versus shooter, parse a Dota pop quiz, and contemplate a few hamburgers long past.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

If the guy who wrote in from Salt Lake City can read this, what is the office building you worked in with the Apple Pie Filling Pizza and what is the place you ordered from that did the Pepperoni and Mandarin Orange Pizza?

I need to know.

@jetlag: There's plenty of parts of WW2 they've ignored in service of heroic action, can't see why they couldn't find the same set pieces here.

I liked how Jeff mentioned the unbalance of completion % because of a game being free for a time. My rarest trophies are all Super Time Force Ultra because it was a PS+ game (I think the Platinum is like .3% or something)

It actually crossed my mind when Johnny V. brought Infinity stuff to UPF and said they weren't doing a new disc game that maybe Infinity wasn't doing all that great, but I wrote it off (everything else seemed to suggest Infinity was doing fine). I'd love to know if it was on the ropes back then, or if that was just coincidence.

Glad Jeff didn't review Uncharted. Although this makes me wonder what someone else would've rated Quantum Break, or if his impressions just put the whole crew off that game.

On a side note, the thrilling combat of Quantum Break makes the Uncharted gunplay feel even more pedestrian.

Wow, what an unexpected turn of events; Jeff seems down on another blockbuster game that isn't Call of Duty.

No but seriously, him criticizing the game and saying that he feels there are elements that should be better, while still only being on around chapter 7 (before the game has even opened up) is a bit weird. There are a ton of improvements and design changes that seem to take from TLOU and other games, but I don't think that Jeff getting further into the game would change his mind. He just doesn't seem to like these types of games. To each their own I guess. Doesn't change the fact that I'm having a blast playing through what seems to be the best Uncharted game yet, and that's saying a lot.

Dan, i'm not trying to be mean, but just stay away from history as a topic; simplistic, action movie, black/white logic just doesn't work and it's veeeery easy to piss off people (for real, not in a fun trolly way)

@wagrid: I'm sorry but why are you speaking for Europe as a whole and not just for the UK? WW1 is taught and remembered very differently from what you are saying in other european countries (and Napoleon too), beyond the tragic nature of it.

As an Australian, I'd say we attach a more solemn, sombre attitude to WWI than any other war we've been involved in. An entire generation of young men were slaughtered at the behest of empires and at the command of incompetent generals for no good reason. (Winston Churchill had a pretty mixed reputation over here for a long time thanks to his involvement in the Gallipoli campaign.)

Besides, any war that gave us Hitler is clearly a war not worth having.

@hayt: it's personal preference. I have the same disdain for anything not modern anymore. I enjoyed those games at the time and had my fair time with lee enfields and garands but I don't really want to go back to that well. I just don't think there is anything exciting or new to be mines from that time period on a purely gameplay level perspective. You can't make those guns shoot any different.

As someone who tried to get back into Hearthstone when that most recent expansion came out, I can confirm that seemingly everyone still playing Hearthstone has a much better deck than I do. It might be pretty difficult for young Bradley to make any sort of headway in that game starting out without spending some real money.

For those interested in the WW1 talk, Dan Carlin's podcast 'Hardcore History' has a fantastic 5 part series on WW1, entitled Blueprint for Armageddon. While World War 2 seems to be generally viewed as Good (Allies) vs. Evil (Nazis), WW1 is much murkier. Neither side seems really great. So Great Britain/America/Russia/the rest of the Allies, could somewhat justify the horrific casualties in WW2 with, 'well, the Nazi's are surely evil, these young people dying are dying for a good cause, to stop this evil.'. In World War 1, the reasons for war weren't nearly as cut and dried. And when general's threw thousands of lives every day at enemy trenches to gain 100 yards of territory, it does not sit as well in the history books.

Edit: I am an American who has tried my best to understand the world view of the World Wars. If I am incorrect in any of this, please, let me know.

@ripelivejam: it would definitely be a huge temptation for me! I've started to sort of ween off the live content lately preferring to run archived shows in the background at work or whenever (generally I only care for the audio) and similarly I use the Bomb/Beastcast for when I go running to the point where I'll actively wait with listening to them until my run-day comes up. BUT(T) seeing a live Bombcast with LIVE questions would be super intriguing.

@wagrid said:

OK, for Dan's benefit: The way the First World War is remembered in Europe is far closer to how the Civil War is remembered in the Southern United States. This is not a perfect analogy, but it works. There is a lot of bad feeling and denial (for example, look at the way the British paint themselves as the 'good guys' in that war despite the British Empire being pretty demonstrably evil, you can compare this to the whole "nah, definitely not about slavery" thing despite the fact that the Civil War was, y'know about slavery).

There are people that try and paint it as Good Western Europe vs Evil Central Europe and also Russia Was There, but I think that's largely influenced by a teleological reading of history; viewing the First World War as part of a package with the second and thus forcing in to conform to a certain good vs evil narrative.

In actuality it had far more in common with the Napoleonic Wars a century before hand (like, Napoleon was a raging imperialist who exploited his client states. . . and was a significantly more enlightened ruler in many ways than any of his contemporaries - there is no clear cut moral narrative). There's a complex web of diplomatic and dynastic politics (the First World War had a lot to do with who fucked who in the 15th/16th centuries. Not joking) that led to it.

Then factor in the atrocities. There were a lot of those, and I don't really want to do a long digression on mustard gas since that information is very widely available. In the UK we're expected to venerate the dead of WW1 differently than WW2 - those were wasted lives, destroyed for petty reasons. It's a different kind of vibe than WW2 - if WW2 is a moral epic then WW1 is an enormous tragedy.

So that's the First World War in Europe - the legacy of European Imperialism, the lack of a clear Good Guy/Bad Guy narrative and the horrors of that war all play a role in defining public memory of WW1. I'm not saying you can't make a game out of it, or judging whether you should or should not - I don't even entirely endorse the way its commonly remembered (like so many parts of European history, I think we remember it in a profoundly problematic way to escape the frankly appalling legacies of Empire - there is nothing British people like more than acting like the Empire was a Good Thing and sticking their fingers in their ears when you point out otherwise).

The First World War is not an entirely healed wound in Europe. Maybe they hammer this stuff home later in the show, but this was about as far as the conversation got when I paused it to go do something else, then decided to write this post instead.

Man, I'd upvote this comment if I could. Well done!

@xylase:

That's pretty much on point with how I was taught it in school in the UK in the late 80s/early 90s.

The overall message was it was an enormous waste of millions of lives for litte purpose; and from the UK perspective - lead by incompetent generals promoted because of class/upbringing rather than ability, using tactics suited to another era of warfare altogether.

You know, I think because I just recently caught up on listening the GOTY (Nobody on the crew seemed to really like the Witcher) and listening to this new podcast, I'm reminded that Jeff doesn't like any of the Uncharted games, I've started to wonder what games with good storytelling does Jeff like? I was trying to think, and wasn't sure exactly. I'm not sure if it's just a string of the more recent games that he's seemed to not enjoy are painting my thoughts on this.

Pretty sure a few of the GTA games, One or two Metal Gears Solid games and Saints Row (I know Rockstar does great storytelling, Kojima's a great storyteller, but I can't speak to the storytelling of the Saints Row games).I think I'm more in line with Vinny's taste, and bit more drawn to games with good storytelling.

I was totally unsure going into the Overwatch beta - loved the look of it, but didn't know whether I'd actually take to the game or not. Turns out the huge positive buzz completely carried over to me and I'm totally sold on it. Characters all feel really distinct both stylistically and playstyle-wise. Can't wait to hop into the full release.

In the meantime hopefully I can squeeze in Uncharted 4 and R&C, both of which I picked up yesterday. Thankfully there's no big releases I've got my eye on for a little while now, because my wallet isn't in the happiest place after the past couple of days. :p

WRT Battlefield 1 (and, yeah, that name is real dumb) - it suspect what they're actually making is a standard Battlefield game but with a WW1 "skin". The combat of WW1 doesn't seem like it'd fit well to a shooter, so I suspect what we'll actually see is the weapons and vehicles of that era in a more familiar form (akin I guess to the WW2-era Battlefield titles).

Pepperoni and pineapple on pizza is delicious. My roommate in senior year of college put all of us in the suite up to trying it out one night when we were ordering and we took a chance on it and all of us loved it. The spiciness of the pepperoni compliments the sweetness of the pineapple in an awesome way.

Also live podcasts sound awesome and intriguing. Sometimes people are dumb in chat but they're usually removed quickly and I enjoy being goofy with other people while spectating the Giant Bomb crew doin' stuff.

A great video about the deaths in WW2 compared to other wars. As per discussion in the podcast.

http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/06/spectacular-video-putting-wwii-deaths-perspective.html

Just for perspective on the numbers.

Wagrids post earlier on largely hits the nail on the head in how WW1 is viewed from a British perspective. A huge loss of life, fighting for European Imperialism and class based interests.

The deaths in WW2 are of an order of magnitude above all other wars though. The video explains this really well.

Growing up in England, we didn't learn shit about WW1 either, I'm just as confused about people bristling at the depiction of WW1 given the decades of dumb WW2 media we went through.

I think its totally fine for DICE to choose a setting just because its got a cool mix of tech. They have no more an obligation to be respectful than they did with any previous game.

Really? We did quite a bit about it in Scotland.

Live bombcast sounds cool, makes sense that they're doing the effects live with that in mind, like the tested podcast does.

If BF1 has those hero tokens scattered around the war zone like Star Wars Battlefront I'm going to be fuming.

Okay if they do it in a special mode, but if they fuck with conquest, they're doing a mistake.

I think I like Overwatch more than i like battleborn, but I think some of the comparisons were bad on this bombcast, like them saying it isn't as intuitive as Overwatch, it's hard when it is a game that has loot that effects gameplay, and a skill tree, Overwatch just having 21 heroes that don't have progression, is of course going to be more intuitive than a game that not only has a skilltree, but one with a decision on each tier.

That said, if we ignore complexity of game mechanics, differing genres etc, I would agree that overwatch is the more polished game

Wasn't he mostly criticizing the mechanics as in shooting/jumping to your death, saying that they're the same as uncharted always has been?

Do you really have to play the whole game to have an opinion on those things?

He likes the other stuff about the game, I wouldn't say he hates the game, like some seem to be saying ( maybe not you ) in the comment section here.

Quite frustrating to listen to Brad be effusive about Uncharted whilst tippy-toeing around Jeff's dislikes of it. But I suppose that's the result of everyone being snarky and critical of everything all the time - that is deemed more valid in some way.

@arbitrarywater: If I've learned anything from watching Daily Dota, Brad is not one to shy away from paying to open up a bunch of random drops.

Also, there's usually one or two deck options at any given time that are mostly commons and rares but quite effective. Warlock Zoo is pretty effective right now and somewhat easy to obtain, though it would take a bit of time for a completely new account to get there.
