The announcement was part of its earnings report. I can promise you the Walt Disney Company doesn't schedule its earnings report around the recording of the Giant Bombcast. (Though I love the idea of a world in which it does!)

@ez123: I don't always love him, but thank goodness Dan is around to balance the positivity/negativity on the Bombcast. It would be a real "bummer" otherwise.

Wikipedia claims that GameFreak already put out an iOS and Android version of the horse solitaire game in Japan? It just only came over here because Nintendo was willing to publish/localize it I guess. Learning that mostly made me wonder how much f2p nonsense Nintendo made them strip out. Still looking forward to trying it soon.

@dougfunk15: he does add quite a bit of rowdy joy, but i'd also say the negativity of the rest of the crew is greatly exaggerated.

Growing up in England, we didn't learn shit about WW1 either, I'm just as confused about people bristling at the depiction of WW1 given the decades of dumb WW2 media we went through.

I think its totally fine for DICE to choose a setting just because its got a cool mix of tech. They have no more an obligation to be respectful than they did with any previous game.

OK, for Dan's benefit: The way the First World War is remembered in Europe is far closer to how the Civil War is remembered in the Southern United States. This is not a perfect analogy, but it works. There is a lot of bad feeling and denial (for example, look at the way the British paint themselves as the 'good guys' in that war despite the British Empire being pretty demonstrably evil, you can compare this to the whole "nah, definitely not about slavery" thing despite the fact that the Civil War was, y'know about slavery).

There are people that try and paint it as Good Western Europe vs Evil Central Europe and also Russia Was There, but I think that's largely influenced by a teleological reading of history; viewing the First World War as part of a package with the second and thus forcing in to conform to a certain good vs evil narrative.

In actuality it had far more in common with the Napoleonic Wars a century before hand (like, Napoleon was a raging imperialist who exploited his client states. . . and was a significantly more enlightened ruler in many ways than any of his contemporaries - there is no clear cut moral narrative). There's a complex web of diplomatic and dynastic politics (the First World War had a lot to do with who fucked who in the 15th/16th centuries. Not joking) that led to it.

Then factor in the atrocities. There were a lot of those, and I don't really want to do a long digression on mustard gas since that information is very widely available. In the UK we're expected to venerate the dead of WW1 differently than WW2 - those were wasted lives, destroyed for petty reasons. It's a different kind of vibe than WW2 - if WW2 is a moral epic then WW1 is an enormous tragedy.

So that's the First World War in Europe - the legacy of European Imperialism, the lack of a clear Good Guy/Bad Guy narrative and the horrors of that war all play a role in defining public memory of WW1. I'm not saying you can't make a game out of it, or judging whether you should or should not - I don't even entirely endorse the way its commonly remembered (like so many parts of European history, I think we remember it in a profoundly problematic way to escape the frankly appalling legacies of Empire - there is nothing British people like more than acting like the Empire was a Good Thing and sticking their fingers in their ears when you point out otherwise).

The First World War is not an entirely healed wound in Europe. Maybe they hammer this stuff home later in the show, but this was about as far as the conversation got when I paused it to go do something else, then decided to write this post instead.

Jeff's total disdain for older weapons is puzzling. Modern shooters are basically 80 variations of rapid fire gun be it SMGs, LMG, assault rifles or even full auto pistols these days. In older settings you still get your rapid fire weapons in the form of SMGs, HMGs and LMGs but you also get semi-autos and bolt-actions. There were a lot of different guns in WW1 let alone WW2 which he also seems to think has "broken" guns. Maybe he just doesn't like not having modern sights?

Man Overwatch is so freaking good. Going into the open beta was my first time playing it and I was super skeptical at first and just saw it as Team Fortress 2 clone, but damn coming out I was super impressed. The classes all have a lot of character that's not too in your face and just how the game plays and feels is great. I can't afford to buy it at launch right now but once I get some scratch I'm definitely gonna be playing it a lot.
