This is a really fantastic Bombcast, though I must admit to feeling kind of like a chicken in a barrel when everyone started talking at once.

I can't go back to the early 3d games.  The graphics are way too off putting.  On the other hand, I go back and play the late 2d games released.  I couldn't play FF7 again, but I could go back and play Fallout 2 or Baldur's Gate 2 any day.

Great podcast as always. I can't believe how subdued Paul Barnett is when hes not talking about WAR. I'm off to do some deep thinking about the future of video games.

This was an awesome podcast. I loved the fascinating discussion on the history of video games and our "golden eras". And hearing Greg Kasavin is always awesome.
I will say that I can go back and play early 3D games and still love them. I played Metal Gear Solid for the first time this past January, and it was one of the most amazing gaming experiences I've had in a long time. And I've played quite a few games over the years, so it's not like I haven't been jaded. And also, while for most games that I loved during childhood I can't go back and replay them, there are some that I have continually replayed and enjoyed over the years. The original Half-Life, Majora's Mask, or Banjo-Tooie are just some of the games I've replayed quite a few times. So there are exceptions to the rule of not replaying old 3D games, or games of our youth.

This was really fascinating. It was incredibly interesting to listen to the discussion relating to gaming reviewing system in general, and how games development was progressing in the future. Paul Barnett had many nuggets of wisdom (even if he did hog the show slightly). Might I say that this was one of the most informative (and important) podcasts I have ever listened to?

I completely agree with you. I just bought (for myself) at the age of 17 the first console since my Super Nintendo: the PS2. I've already bought the MGS Essential Collection. I curse my parents who didn't get me any video games, but mainly myself because I wasn't aware of the magic going on. Now I'm trying to relive the past. So far, my Essential PS2 game list includes:

Psychonauts
Shadow of the Colossus
Metal Gear 1/2/3
Beyond Good and Evil
Resident Evil 4
Okami
FF7
God of War 1/2
Kingdom Hearts
Killzone
GTA3
Black
Castlevania: PS2
PoP: Sands of Time
Rayman2
Steambot Chronicles
killer 7
Eternal darkness
Bully

If you have any others to suggest, please do.

Sorry for double posting, but I want to tell Paul Barnett:

I salute you sir. I wish that my parents made that same conscientious decision. You are an excellent parent and your son will thank you when he grows up to be the greatest developer of his generation thanks to all of his experience.

That was a great podcast. Paul Barnett had some really interesting things to say, as did everyone else. I loved the insight your former colleague's gave about the move from game journalism to game development. Also, I miss reading Gregs' reviews... and, wow Joe Fielder, there's a blast from the past.

Breadmakers?  We make at least one loaf a week using our breadmaker!  I never buy bread in the supermarket now thanks to our breadmaker!

Now I've got that off my chest, it was cool to hear about Super Mario 64.  That game is truly ageless, the original and best 3d platformer.  Great discussion.

I just wanted to add to the part about revisiting games.  It's pretty tough to go back to the N64/PS1 era for me.  I tried revisiting Turok and Goldeneye and was horrified not only at how impossible the controls were, but how terrible it looked.  I still can enjoy Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask however.  Gran Turismo 2 is the only game on PS1 I could play, but why would I when GT4 is pretty much the exact same game but better?  Hell, I have trouble playing GC/Xbox/PS2 games sometimes.  I still love SNES games though, but NES is a little tough for me.  The Atari stuff is oddly okay though.  Maybe because its sooo simplistic, but something about Atari games does it for me aesthetically.  It's especially weird because I grew up on the NES, so its not like I have fond memories of Atari or anything.
Anyways, that was long and rambling, great podcast, and I have to agree, Paul talked for the perfect amount of time :)
