Giant Bombcast GDC 09 Day One

We discuss some of the highlights from our first day at GDC 09 with an all-star panel of game developers, including EALA's Amer Ajami and Greg Kasavin, Mythic Entertainment's Paul Barnett, 2K Boston's Joe Fielder, and Turn 10 Studios' Che Chou.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

I'm glad to see so many comments on Paul Barnett's commentary. I got the feeling he may have felt a bit dated, but his insights were thought provoking. I personally felt that the message he was trying to convey was that experiences are age dependent and never change. The current gamers, developers, and reviewers are stacking their experiences and building tolerances. Their like a junkie trying to experience that first high. I felt Paul was trying to explain how the experiences are timeless and a developer can have just as big of an impact now with the same gameplay, just on younger or less experienced audiences. But there is always the hardcore, like many of you and myself, who demand new experiences. Personally, I wouldn't mind some old gameplay mechanics spiced up with some new technology. I know it's being done, but I mean on a grand scale. A big budget old school experience. Hire top-of-the-line writers, voice actors, and composers; and make the greatest 2D side-scroller, top down shooter, three-quarter view, or turn-based RPG ever created. I'd buy that.

Oh, yeah, and I was kinda looking forward to another podcast tonight, but it doesn't seem like it's going to make it. I guess tomorrow night's booked.

i really enjoy listening to what greg had to say, thar dude is great.  paul on the other hand,  i felt that he was really disconnected from what the others were talking about. the things he said abou this "boy" didnt really make much sense and his general super optimsim with the times just seems... well, crazy.

he did have somee interesting inputs though, the robot/mandoll thing was cool enough.
anyways, superb podcast. thanks

OH MY GOD. This has to be the most jam packed podcast I have ever listened to. The flood of information and philosophy just killed my brain. I literally had to go take some aspirin to get rid of a headache after listening to that.

I'm going to make this one last comment before I, unfortunately, take my leave of the site for good:

I think Ryan needs to leave Giant Bomb. You're obviously a very intelligent person. You've got a lot going for you, but you're dragging the Giant Bomb experience down. What you need is your own radio-talk show. I can't help but believe I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Good luck to you, Ryan, and hopefully the rest of the guys of Giant Bomb will come to their senses and finally speak up. No need to be harsh -- just do what you know needs to be done.

Wow. I was totally blown away by the pure amount of information. So much insight and simply incredible depth flood - (agree with PlasmaBeam and Dryker).

Bombcast crew, please, do more developer podcasts in the future, especially with their thoughts on the industry. I feel that I understand, for example, C&C: RE3 so much better from hearing Greg's design philosophy.

Paul Barnett, thank you. That was one of the most insightful 1/3 speeches that I've heard in a long time.

Like your drama do you? I don't know what the hell you're talking about, and I don't think anyone else does either. Every member of the staff has their place on the site, and Ryan's is to lead the Bombcast and bring some sort of structure to it. He leads the discussion, so of course he talks a lot.

You make no sense.

This Bombcast has been thoroughly inspiring. I absolutely love hearing what all these people are thinking about the media, and how deeply many of their thoughts resonate with my own, and how they also managed to flesh out some of the things I'd been subconciously thinking to myself for me. It was cool to sit and listen to everyone talk, and know how a lot of these folks are from a generation back when gaming was a fledgling media,  and how much the thoughts and experiences I've formulated for myself (being only 17) are so very similar to their own.

I particularly enjoy hearing Paul Barnett speak in general. I've only known about him for around a year now, and I have so much respect for the guy. He has such a deep insight on the games themselves and the industry as a whole, it's always thought provoking to hear what he has to say about that. Even better, when he was finished talking, someone would typically chime in almost immediately with something I'd be thinking, "Heck yeah!" to.

Didn't mean to ramble, but really, it's absolutely refreshing to listen to such a large number of people sit and talk about games so seriously, and all their particular, and nearly philosophical views.

This made my day.

It's cool to have that many people in the room, but there were plenty of times that I had to mess with my volume to hear some folks.  I know you guys don't have the usual setup, though, so it's whatever works.

Paul Barnett got irritating. Not because of his design philosophies or his mindset, but because he kept throwing the entire podcast off into topics that were covered multiple times already.

Really fascinating podcast. It got a little hectic at times but I felt Ryan did an excellent job in keeping the whole thing (relatively) focused. Paul Barnett came up with some very interesting points, but his enthusiasm for the subjects discussed kind of lead to him dominating the conversation at points, when I would have wanted to hear some other opinions around the room.

"You must get yourself more kids.... because this one sure is stupid" I felt that remark was quite rude.

He was only trying to express that kids dont bother about things like "A wii game MUST have motion" etc. hence were able to enjoy games, because of the Wii, that they wouldn't have otherwise. (with being really old and for discontinued consoles)

I just finished listening to the podcast, and I really enjoyed most of the podcast. Pretty much everything Paul Barnett said I felt was a really good listen. That is up until he on several instances would use Playstation in a negative way. I also thought the remark that Che made basically saying that the people at Kojima Productions were the ones that did all the real work on the MGS franchise, and Hideo Kojima just gets all the credit was pretty ridiculous. I'm sure that it's all a team effort over at Kojima Productions, but to say that Hideo had no influence is just dumb.

I think you misheard. he was saying he needs to have more kids because most other kids are stupid. He was impressed by his kid, not trying to berate him.

@Anwar: They were working on some weird 80's game at some point, maybe that? I know they used some assets from that project for one of the rips (that showed the movie theatre) from the trailers.

I just re-listened to this... and MAN Paul Barnett is on the ball. He pretty much saw the coming of Skylanders. I couldn't argue with any point he makes about game development. This is one great listen, even now, three years later.

Oh, how naïve Greg was... Once the only remaining bastion (heh) of creativity in this tired industry in dire need of a crash, indie games have descended into their own brand of anti-consumer generica. Remember: any good idea this industry comes up with will be irrevocably corrupted. He's right about killer7, though.

1998 was peak gaming. And honestly, man, if you don't have the context, you can't appreciate anything. Books, movies, games, action figures, food, whatever. If you don't understand its context, you can't get it.

And no, Mr. UK Bloke, physical DLC isn't a bloody close miss; it's bloody shite, mate.
