"Anguis iacta est" -- The Snake has been cast. No? That's not how latin works? :/

Either way, thank you for doing a spoilercast for this game.

You got too far Solid Snake, but it turns out the leader of Outer Heaven is me, your commanding officer Big Boss!

Actually no I'm just a guy who was made to look like Big Boss, and brain washed to think that I'm Big Boss.

So I'm about 107 hours in to this game now and still am in the slow, tedious and difficult process of unlocking mission 46 which gets you the true ending - something I've not seen yet. Regular final mission is 30, the second credits end mission is 45. And this is what I gather the gb guys have played up to and completed I'll assume?

Cause holy shit some of those hard missions are no joke.

@lazyaza: I think you can just do side ops and it will eventually unlock, I beat a couple of the total stealth/subsistence/extreme missions but for the most part I was just working through side ops when it unlocked.

Huh that's odd. I think I did like...three of the repeated missions, maybe 32-35, and the rest were only the story stuff and yellow side ops and I unlocked 46 fairly easily.

Huey explicitly killed Dr. Strangelove. How could you not listen to her asking him to let her out without thinking that.

This is probably a redundant question, but does this deal with stuff post Mission 31? I'm on 33.

You need to have:

Huey exiled

Side op 150 completed and the previous story missions completed (the ones in yellow)

and then you should do like 2-3 side ops and it should unlock.

I know the moment I started bee-lining the story missions I had a ton of problems because you need to do about 3 side ops or supposedly 1 full mission before anything triggers. So when I was trying to just get story after story it really hampered my progress having to extract some soldiers and take out heavy infantry, waiting for the radio callback to base.

MGSV is the best Metal Gear in terms of mechanics. But it's the worst Metal Gear in terms of boss battles, story, and twist. MGSV is an amazing game, but is not a good Metal Gear game.

I've been banging this drum in a vague fashion for the past couple of weeks, but I can finally say without hesitation that I despise the 'twist' that you're not playing as Big Boss. This isn't like the MGS2 bait-and-switch with Raiden, because that game was upfront about you not playing as Snake as soon as Raiden shows up. MGS V pulls the rug out from you at the VERY END, and for me, that renders basically everything that happens in the game meaningless. Maybe I wouldn't be this angry if the man I was actually playing as felt like a character, but as it stands, I don't care about this dumb medic (who I don't even think gets a name, such is his lack of characterization). I care about Big Boss, and what makes Big Boss decide to 'turn' towards villainy. This game cheated me out of that. As much as people are up in arms about the 'unfinished' nature of the story, even if everything Kojima wanted in the game was put in, it wouldn't fix my main problem with the story.

Also, yeah, Huey is a huge piece of shit. He totally killed Strangelove; it wasn't an accident. Quiet got a pretty good arc leading to a shitty conclusion. Her character deserved a better sendoff. My only real question is...is Paz ACTUALLY alive? Or is it ALL A DREAM? Who knows; it's stupid either way.

She's literally banging on the door saying "Huey let me out!". How can you interpret that as anything other than him locking her in there?

I don't think the side op 150 thing is true though, because there are bunch of people finishing the Quiet storyline after the main story. Side op 150 goes straight into mission 45.

I loved the story. Like REALLY REALLY loved the story. Making BB into a maniacal villain wouldn't have worked at all. The ENTIRE point of this was to basically destroy the "legend" of Big Boss and show that his entire legend was built on the shoulders of XOF and Zero and Ahab.

His ACTUAL turn happened in Peace Walker which is yet again why I've been repeating ad nausem everyone who cares about MGS V should play Peacewalker. The second he threw down The Boss' ideology was his turn. He discarded her memory. He rejected her. THAT was the turn. Its not about him being some maniacal villain it is as it always is with Metal Gear about ideology. I've got much much more to say but I'll save that for a proper blog post in the future.

Just wanted to say it does add a TON to the fiction because of how it characterizes Big Boss. We saw through the legend and saw that the actual man was sort of a coward and not nearly as "legendary" as he was built up to be.

My take on this game is that the Big Boss twist absolutely saves the story. I started to suspect really, really early (as in, before leaving the hospital) and it added a layer of intrigue. All the Skull Face stuff was atrocious - during his big villain monologue on the jeep I started listening to the Snake Eater theme because I was bored.

I'm not saying it was well written and well executed, it was dumb and weird and very, very Metal Gear and I liked it for that (for the same reason I like 2 despite thinking it's actually kind of an all around shitty game).

Also, I'm not saying that putting all the interesting stuff in part 2 of the game rubbed me the wrong way, but I already had "MGSV Chapter 2 ending" typed into Youtube before the in game 'trailer' ended.

MGS1 and Snake Eater remain the only Metal Gear games with good writing. 2 and 4 are entertaining for being weird and up their own arses - it's bad writing as spectacle and I love them for it, but I certainly can't praise them for it.

Metal Gear Solid V, yes the letter V, cause real mgs 5 is Peace Walker( a much better game in terms of tapes, characters and story than mgsv btw), has maybe the best gameplay mechanics out of all the games, but it gets really repetitive in terms of mission design, open world being empty and most outposts being totally generic, as well as suffering from having a too big of a base with almost nothing to do in. Also, the "bosses" suck. That is why, even though playing great, it is BY FAR the WEAKEST MGS game in terms of story and interesting characters and their development.

@lazyaza : Don't worry, those Hard Variations aren't mandatory. You just need to replay either 1 Story Mission or do a handful of Side-Ops, and Kaz will constantly call you back to base for more narrative.

Make sure to check on Huey's progress below deck on his latest invention between missions, and one story thread requires maxing out your relationship with Quiet, but be warned, the end of this quest line removes her from your party permanenty. This quest line isn't required for Mission 46 though, and you can avoid it by equipping the Butterfly symbol in your emblem.
