I don't want to be a "that guy" but I called the twist about 20 minutes into playing the game. Ishmael being voice by Keifer and the "create a character" were the giveaways. He was clearly Big Boss. He was the one who always knew what to do, where to go, how to get out of danger, etc. You were just some fool with jelly legs falling all over the place. I felt that the true Big Boss wouldn't make that much careless noise.

So I'm about 107 hours in to this game now and still am in the slow, tedious and difficult process of unlocking mission 46 which gets you the true ending - something I've not seen yet. Regular final mission is 30, the second credits end mission is 45. And this is what I gather the gb guys have played up to and completed I'll assume?

Cause holy shit some of those hard missions are no joke.

Huh that's odd. I think I did like...three of the repeated missions, maybe 32-35, and the rest were only the story stuff and yellow side ops and I unlocked 46 fairly easily.

The fuck? I've literally beaten all but like 3 of the side ops in the entire game and still have no 46. What the heck...

@lazyaza : Don't worry, those Hard Variations aren't mandatory. You just need to replay either 1 Story Mission or do a handful of Side-Ops, and Kaz will constantly call you back to base for more narrative.

Make sure to check on Huey's progress below deck on his latest invention between missions, and one story thread requires maxing out your relationship with Quiet, but be warned, the end of this quest line removes her from your party permanenty. This quest line isn't required for Mission 46 though, and you can avoid it by equipping the Butterfly symbol in your emblem.

Way way past all that, did literally every story mission besides 46, only hard ones left now, and like I said above, I've got 99% of the side ops under my belt but still no 46 unlock.

Brad's ideas on Big Boss seems to be largely ignorant of his entire character change at the end of Peace Walker.

@captainthunderpants: I was in the same boat. I think this actually made Kiefer tolerable for me. Like, the VA meant I had trouble thinking of him as actually being Snake and, as it turns out, he wasn't actually Snake. That probably wasn't intentional, but it totally works.

You only get Mission 51 through the special edition right? That seems like incredible BS to me. Like I have NO way of getting to this through my retail game I bought day 1? That's so ridiculous

Alright, this is what I've been waiting for. Been done with the game for a while now though and am not really playing it now, though I will certainly go back.

Edit - It wasn't Ocelot that killed Miller, it was Liquid.

I love how Brad was going in a rant about Miller motivations not making sense in MG2 until Jeff mentioned he was working with Solid Snake.

You don't get the mission. You get a video showing you unfinished assets from the mission. You can just watch it on youtube.

I don't get why everyone hates insane Miller. He exemplifies the Ahab monomania better than any other character in the game. Of course he's insane, he lost an arm and a leg.

Great discussion. I loved this game, but part of that is probably me not caring that much about the MGS story so the ending and all of that didn't bother me.

Well, to be fair, that's because no one in this discussion played Peace Walker. Even Dan. I'd like to say they weren't giving it its just due, but... getting though that game was sort of a struggle for me.

@waterfallsuite: It is in the game, it's part of the final story mission. The cut mission you're thinking of focuses on other stuff.

Huh that's odd. I think I did like...three of the repeated missions, maybe 32-35, and the rest were only the story stuff and yellow side ops and I unlocked 46 fairly easily.

You need to have:

Huey exiled

Side op 150 completed and the previous story missions completed (the ones in yellow)

and then you should do like 2-3 side ops and it should unlock.

I know the moment I started bee-lining the story missions I had a ton of problems because you need to do about 3 side ops or supposedly 1 full mission before anything triggers. So when I was trying to just get story after story it really hampered my progress having to extract some soldiers and take out heavy infantry, waiting for the radio callback to base.

I don't think the side op 150 thing is true though, because there are bunch of people finishing the Quiet storyline after the main story. Side op 150 goes straight into mission 45.

Oh yah I got that confused with what you need for mission 45. But I did do side op 150 and 45 before 46 unlocked for me so maybe that is also a good path to take? Also for reference my MB had a 4/4 Command, 4/4 R&D and then 3/4 for everything else although I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes. My overall completion rating for the game was somewhere around 49-51%.

In MGS4, there's that whole sequence in Eastern Europe with Big Momma and the remains of 'Big Boss' in the ziplock bag, followed by big reveal at the end with the real Big Boss being alive.

My question is, were the remains that Liquid captured briefly (and which ended up being burned on the river) the remains of Venom Snake? Was that ever explained in MGS4?

I think the reveal contextualizes some moments from the preceding game in an interesting way, especially the moment in the quarantined lab where the soldiers are saluting you, willing to die at your hands.

At first you are under the impression they are willing to die at the hands of the Legendary Big Boss, and entrust their fate to his judgement nobly for the greater good, while in reality they were saluting the field medic, a lie, in their last moment.

I think Jeff nailed it, like the 6th sense, you can redigest the game after the reveal in a different way, but only to come to the conclusion that they are all pieces of shit. I LOVED it for that, I also love it because it partially absolves Big Boss of the evils he supposedly commits between Peace Walker and Metal Gear. It also allows me to play through the game and go full demon next time, while previously I was super careful and diligently staying as non-lethal as possible to preserve the sanctity of BB.

It was Solidus. It was explained later in that game by Big Boss himself. A big giveaway was that the wrong eye was missing/damaged when you see it in the scene that shows it.

One one hand I'm probably not going to play this game any time soon and when I do spoilers I won't really care about spoilers.

But on the other hand I kind want to watch Drew playthrough it after I reup my subscription.

She's literally banging on the door saying "Huey let me out!". How can you interpret that as anything other than him locking her in there?

I can picture an entirely silly comedy bit where Strangelove tells Huey to not let her out EVEN when she tells him to but as she is dying she actually decides she really wants to get out and Huey is just all 'No you told me not to though'.

But seriously how can people think she did it voluntarily?

@danryckert Please read this and share this with Jeff and Brad. I am more then sure this is why they made the audience play as Venom Snake it is awesome I hope you guys enjoy this theory which can possibly be the reason. @brad.shoemaker@gmail.com

Metal Gear had Solid Snake save Frank Jaeger(Grey Fox) from outer heaven and stop Metal Gear. But why? why would Big Boss have his own pupil with the highest code name of "fox" to be a prisoner? The Metal Gear mythos shows us that Solid Snake was recruited by Big Boss and Miller into Foxhound, and no Solid Snake (David) has no clue about Big Boss being his father at this time. Venom Snake after finding his true identity deals with what was described in METAL GEAR SOLID 2 SONS OF LIBERTY, in this game it is explained that soldiers that underwent this form of hypnosis ultimately "come to" and find themselves going crazy or in Venom Snakes creates the "fake" outer heaven and has all eyes on him. So Venom Snake Possibly becomes this terrorist threatening the world with a nuke. and maybe Big Boss tried to send Gray Fox to kill Venom but became captured.

The Big Boss that Snake was talking to in the beginning of the first Metal Gear from MSX is the real Big Boss sending Snake on his most important mission. just like what MGSV shows us and MGS4 when all eyes are on you u must distract the attention which is one of the most important IDEAS in MGSV. It is possible that Big Boss sent Solid Snake with the intentions of dying but finding out Solid Snake is too good and defeats Venom Snake. Which ultimately shows that Venom Snake suffers from the same fate "The Boss" (Big Bosses Mentor). Knowingly taking a mission that might bring his ultimate demise, but Venom Snake is "True to his purpose" to distract attention so that real big boss creates Zanzibar land which is the real outer heaven and the training grounds to Foxhound.

I hope you guys consider this post I would love to respond. Just hearing 30 mins of the podcast im srry if this is addressed but I wanted brad to see this, because this is what I got from MGSV.

I think the most damning thing about stuff getting cut is that there was apparently and entire Chapter 3 that is nowhere in the game, but parts can still dug up in the PC version. So the stuff was there, but it was never used. It's pretty obvious from all the cut content that the game wasn't finished. Somewhere along the way they got shut down. Hell, there's even VO work that done and never added into the game.

Looks like MGSV is guaranteed GOTY for Giant Bomb with no other contestants. I really wish at least one person at Giant Bomb West would complete Witcher 3 to compare it against MGSV, as I think its a way better game overall. It seems like they mostly dismissed Witcher 3 after barely playing any because of the gameplay, whereas they insta-locked MGSV after like 1 hour of play for GOTY almost purely because of the gameplay.

The Friday I'm In Love tape was really weird to find but I guess I can see why they did it. It's the most recognizable Cure song, unfortunately.

If we're talking singles they could've just gone with A Forest or Charlotte Sometimes instead. In Between Daysand Close To Me would also have been acceptable if we're talking 1985.

But then again they also had that super weird tape with "[Remasterd]" or whatever right there in the title.

Gameplay is half of every game. I can understand why they didn't enjoy Witcher 3's gameplay and xp system as much as MGSV(even with the exaggeration of them playing only an 'hour' of it). However there is no arguing that Witcher 3 has an amazing set of stories within it. MGSV has some great story beats as well, and you have to at least give it credit for being such a great game to play instead of shooting it down because of the Witcher 3 coming out. Both games will get their credit come GOTY rankings.

The entire payoff of the Paz stuff is in her tapes, specifically the final one. It's actually pretty touching. I'd say it makes up for the grindy side ops and absurdly Kojima 'it was all an hallucination' stuff.

Metal Gear Solid V, yes the letter V, cause real mgs 5 is Peace Walker( a much better game in terms of tapes, characters and story than mgsv btw), has maybe the best gameplay mechanics out of all the games, but it gets really repetitive in terms of mission design, open world being empty and most outposts being totally generic, as well as suffering from having a too big of a base with almost nothing to do in. Also, the "bosses" suck. That is why, even though playing great, it is BY FAR the WEAKEST MGS game in terms of story and interesting characters and their development.

I agree with 97% of this

What are you talking about? It absolutely was in the game proper. Plus, there are even more obvious hints of it during the game than what was discussed on the spoiler cast before Chapter 46. If you look at Venom Snake's reflection on the window in the helicopter at night, its that of your custom made character.

Oh no, the only good thing about this game is the game, so obviously it is a bad game.

Seriously, I love the Metal Gear games to death, but there is a slice of hardcore Metal Gear fans that are super cuckoo bananas.

The story in this series has always been terrible and nonsensical and stupid. The notion that somehow this is the one that ruined what was apparently some sort of beautiful masterpiece of a story, I mean that really is laughable to me. Nanomachine hypnotherapy that causes one man to believe he's another man who lives in the first man's arm, totally acceptable. But Big Boss not speaking quite as much as he used to? Time to fucking riot, I guess.

I couldn't disagree more with Brad about the end twist. I think it actually makes MG1 make a lot more sense within the overall scope of things, as Big Boss sending Solid Snake to Outer Heaven, only to essentially blow himself up never was logical. This just feels like the right choice. And I actually really liked the presentation of it. Critics constantly decry that Kojima lacks subtlety, but when he actually does go for a more subtle direction, they say he didn't go far enough.

I thought that was the tape you were talking about. My bad.

@ch3burashka: There is another tape? Where?

I assume the two tapes in question are

1) The one where Miller first mentions they found a body inside the mammal pod.

2) The actual recording of Strangelove after being locked inside.
