"Why do people keep bitching about the Mako and the inventory in ME1? It was there, but it didn't make the game UNBEARABLE. Was the inventory management really THAT confusing, then maybe people who think that should stick to GOW instead of trying to pull this franchise into the already generic TPS cesspool. "

True. If it was unbearable, it wouldn't have received the positive reviews and overall critical acclaim it did.

Dissapointing...Brad..c'mon!

I have to say that having played and finished Mass Effect 2, I can safely say, without reservation or hesitation, that Bioware’s latest RPG is a complete mess, from top-to-bottom and not a product worthy of Bioware’s heritage.

Co-founder of Bio Ware Ray Muzyka said :" It's nice to receive nice words and congratulations, but I'm more interested in how we drive success in the future. how we make our next games even better than Mass Effect."

Well Ray, if you want to know how to improve your franchise then you would be better of not reading any actual reviews, because my brethren in the journalism community are rabid fanboys who unfortunately have bylines. You also won’t find much at Metacritic because they de-list any site that has review scores that are not within some arbitrary average, which defeats the entire purpose of aggregate reviews when you remove low scores.

You discredit yourself by using the word "heritage" and "rabid fanboys" in this context without any hint of sarcasm. Just say that you subjectively don't like the shift of focus from RPG to the improvement of the shooter-combat gameplay and are obviously not tolerant enough to see how many people welcome the changes as severe improvements. You can disagree with their design decisions (and be in the minority by doing so), but that doesn't make it an objectively bad game.

On second thought after reading your second paragraph again you're probably just a raging paranoid neckbeard, so i just wasted half a minute of my time. Oh well.

You should David. I know it doesn't have Deep Space Nine, but it is still very very good.

Dude your soooooo wrong. This is a ALOT better then both Uncharted 2 and Arkgam Asylum. Mass Effect 2 is the best game this generation of consols and my personal best game ever made.
Keep in mind that Batman was 2nd on my 2009 GOTY list and Uncharted was somewhere there too.

Dammit I liked the Mako, both on the planets and in the mission-specific parts.  Nothing says '80s sci-fi like a 6x6 with jump jets and a gun on it.  The weird thing is, the cargo bay (which you can only enter in one specific sequence) is described as being where you stow the shuttle, cargo, and Hammerhead garage.  Hammerhead sounds like a logical upgrade of a Mako, yet it wasn't there.  So perhaps it was there and got removed, or it's coming in a later DLC, or perhaps it's setting up the third game for it.

My only real complaint of ME2 was the lack of the Mako or similar vehicle.  Even if it was used far less than before, it was something I missed, and would have liked in some fashion.

I found Mass Effect 1 really slow and the Achievements were ridiculous because I didn't want to play it after playing it once. Will I like Mass Effect 2 at all or should I just let it go and accept that I did not like Mass Effect?

Am I the only person that thought ME1 was better?  I thought ME2 controlled a lot better and got rid of everything that was annoying about the first game, but it didn't feel nearly as epic as ME1.  The story in ME1 was more engaging, varied and satisfying.  ME2 was essentially - recruit, gain loyalty, rinse, repeat with 3 or 4 other missions thrown in to progress the story.  Seemed kind of lacking - I don't know I thought it was one of the best games I've every played obviously - just thought it fell a little short of its predecessor.

The reviewer recommends playing ME1 before playing ME2 and at the same time offers a lot of criticisms of ME1 (at least in comparison to ME2).  I did not play the first game in this series but I really liked 2 and look forward to importing my ME2 into 3 when it comes out.  I have considered going back to play 1 but after this review still do not think I want to put up with the various shortcomings of the first game.  The reviewer also draws a lot of comparisons in the review between the two released games in this series.  It would be interesting if he also made comparisons to games in the same or similar genres such as FO3.

@detectivepbert: Take the review for what it is, I've only played the first one and I personally loved it, it does have short comings but the story is very good and most things you can look over.

Not all the changes were good.
Weapon modification in ME1 was OK and they should have left that in.
In ME1 everything you did scored some XP which was nice and gave you incentive to do stuff. In ME2 only main mission give you decent XP. Same with money, in ME2 there is no good way to earn credits, besides main mission.
In combat every situation in ME2 is ambush against you, where in ME1 you could actually surprise the enemy. Ammo that replaces overheat system is not better, especially when it comes to rifles. Reload with sniper rifle in ME2 takes as much time as overheat cooldown in ME1 and yet you get only enough bullets for 4 enemies (if you get head shots).
Still, it is a good game.

Actually the quote that stuck with me was female Shepard sayin, "We can use this" .
I think there are things that ME1 did better. ME3 should be the BEST RPG ever made if DA2 doesn't take that title. For now it's Dragon Age: Origins.

@detectivepbert: I think comparing it to Fallout 3(?) would be irrelevant as they are still two different games aiming for different things. Brad puts it to you straight, Mass Effect 2 streamlined everything and fixed nearly all the problems of the first one.

I just hope they bring back more RPG elements in 3.  2 was a good game but I didn't like they streamlined it so much.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that ME2 is objectively the better game of the two because of it's streamlined action, simpler inventory management, combat, gameplay, graphics, and well everything. It really is what ME1 was trying to be and is a natural evolution despite claims that ME2 was radically different from ME1.

However, ME1's story and what I felt were more sincere and interesting discussions with the characters, along with starting it all is why I personally prefer it over ME2 but only slightly, afterall ME2 gave me my Geth that I wanted since Tali told me about them in ME1.

He specifically said in the review that ME2 fixed every fault that ME1 had, so by simple logic.

Yes you would like ME2 if you like fun.

Mass Effect 2 only advantage to ME1 is that the mechanics are more polished. The game itself, the characters, the story( what story?I have to ask, in ME2) are all better in ME1. While playing ME2 I ended feeling I was doing a cluster of individual missions, with no correlation with each other, while in ME1 it felt like a simgle long mission until the end. The main story missions in the second one, are basicaly make a round to find all your companions, and then a second round, to do all their loyalty missions, and finaly go to clash with the colectors. Who's the enemy? The colectors? They show up so litle time! The secondary missions are hardly remeberable, and even the dialogues, are a lot worse. Again, 2 round of development with each companion. Talk between the companions while on a mission, are gone, they don't talk to each other anymore.

As for the achievements, if you didn't like having to do 2 or 3 playtroughs to be able to get all the achievments, MAss effect 2 is exactly the same. It's still a great game. But not a masterpieace like the first one.

That's basically what I've been saying. The overall arch just wasn't as strong, and the story revolved more on separate character goals.

With that being said, the gameplay felt way better, the character development was top notch, and the game is still one of my favorites. If ME 3 can just provide a good, cohesive narrative with some deeper rpg elements and even tighter shooting (which are there, from what I've seen), it will easily be one of the best games of this generation.

Mass Effect 2 is 10 years old now. Time flies, man, it's scary.
