I went and bought this game on steam after watching this feature start/finish

I think Dan's reaction to this playthrough perfectly illustrates old Dan and new Dan. When he originally played it, if it wasn't core MGS, he wasn't down with it. He wanted all MG games to play like MGS and be all Kojima. Now he realizes what a larger group can do with the established insanity. He now realizes it is pretty much EXACTLY as Metal Gear as all the others, just with the perspective and personality of Edge-lord Raiden. The music, the gameplay, and the insane characters fit Raiden perfectly without losing the Metal Gear thread.

@danryckert The word "gun" in the military refers to cannons, not firearms (what civilians call "guns"). Because most rotary barrelled weapons are actually cannons (roughly, weapons with calibers 20mm and larger), the minigun's name is derived via comparison to them despite firing a much smaller caliber round (7.62mm) like those found in firearms.

Not too surprising to see reflections of the Armstrong character in Trump. Kojima just did a composite of right wing memes(ha) and caricatures into one villain. You can see these right wing caricatures in other games too, but it's done pretty vividly here. It's either ironic or sad that in real life, Trump the 'character' was elected(please don't bring up Clinton .. I get it the criticism). But that's what happens when political extremes are constantly encroached upon and assimilated through the media and online.

The music during the last two boss fights is phenomenal. It's like symphonic dubstep metal.

And 8-4 did a great job with the localization. Speaking of which, if you ever wondered why the MGS games had such stilted, unnatural dialogue after the first one, it's because Kojima was unhappy with the changes the MGS1 translator made, and insisted on a very literal, direct translation from then on. I'm guessing 8-4 had more liberty with the Rising translation, leading to some of the best lines in a Metal Gear game since MGS1.

My 2nd favorite Platinum game after Vanquish.

@zabant: As a libertarian I partially agree with you except for the whole every person their own army and no morals stuff. Libertarianisim isn't anarchy and he went into anarchy pretty far. Even libertarians are not about making murder legal and not having a court system.

This series was a lot of fun but it also had the Dan problem of them missing 50% of the dialogue in the game due to talking over it and not understanding anything happening because of it.

Still fun to watch Drew just cut everything to bits for a few hours!

The music on the final boss fight is so bad it ruins all of the impact. Feels like watching a poor AMV on youtube instead of feeling like an epic conclusion.

Dirty little secret about MGR.

If you can't enjoy the cheese of this whole thing: a ninja cyborg fights a jacked US senator pumped full of nanomachines in a burning wasteland as the ground explode with every attack, I don't know what to tell you. The music fits in perfectly.

The final fight is so overrated it's not even funny. Midway though I actually said to myself "wait THIS is the actual final battle?". It's so underwhelming. The whole game is kind of.

Boy, if this game had come out today and the bad guys were basically anime republicans we'd never hear the end of the whining. Games Internet would be unbearable for weeks. This game came out barely in time.

i'm sad Drew didn't buy unique weapons

Yeah, I got to this part on Normal last night and my life expectancy during the final battle was literally about five seconds. Just over and over and over again. Had to put it down and come back to it today. During that down-time I thought I might actually be unable to do it.

But I read about save-scumming medkits as long as you can get to that first thrown object, and I eventually stockpiled enough to finish him.

So I guess they played through the whole game never realizing that you don't have to manually use the nanopaste, huh? All these unnecessary freak-out moments over replenishing health when it gets low. It works exactly like rations in every other Metal Gear.

Also, WOW, those red target boxes in Blade Mode are comically large on Easy. You almost can't miss.

Another fucked up coincidence is that this game takes place in 2017.

I honestly think the line about "getting into the business of war to get elected" is MORE chilling and prescient than "Make America great again!"

Clearly Metal Gear Rising was a hell of a lot more subversive and prescient than anyone predicted. It's no more ridiculous that we're actually living a Metal Gear game. Thanks guys for the great playthrough!

For those wondering. Bazooka is just a name for an american made weapon that is an RPG. RPG-7 is the name for Russias first RPG that they made in the '60s.

So, all Bazookas are RPGs but not all RPGs are Bazookas.

There's something way funnier now about @drew shouting "And memes! I hate memes!" given what happened a month later.

I used to think the ending was hokey and over-written. These days, less so.

Sigh. And now both of them are gone and mgs is essentially dead... a bit of a depressing rewatch
