The so-called "fruity edition" is actually not that expensive, 90€ over here.

As for Beaterator, it's not too shabby. You move around blocks and it makes sounds. What else do you need? It's about fun, after all. On that note (zing!), remember DanceEjay?

I have Rave eJay and Dance eJay 2 somewhere. Fun times. "

When I saw the little boxes in the video I was instantly reminded of those games. I had dance eJay and HipHop eJay. I think I also had something similar on the GBA which was just horrible.

I would have expected GiantBomb to be a bit more indepth or at least have learned about it a bit more before jumping into a Quick Look. Beaterator needs much more than a 'quick look.'

First off its not a game. Second its not merely just a sample kit and loop editor like MTV Music Generator was. The preset songs suck because they are fucking PRESET SONGS. Timbaland didn't make the PRESET SONGS.

Go into Studio Mode, start a new song, select new loop from scratch, select an instrument and CREATE your own loops. You can even program major and minor chords at the press of a button. You can also do the same if you select synth instead of an instrument. Or just load up from your own samples and loops library.

This obviously wont replace a program like Fruity Loops or Sony ACID but having this at your fingertips is mindblowing. And ironically both of those programs dont feature programmable drumkits, synths or sample editor without a multitude of VST addons.

I make beats and music professionally and this is my new favorite toy.

I think this is good for those who are curious and want to try out the music editing thing. $39 is not a bad asking price for what you probably get. Of course, you can probably find well equuiped demos of ACID, FL studios, or Reason. ...I think? But if you end up getting this, $39 is not bad.

@cide: Did you even watch this video at all?  Everything you criticized was in the video.
They repeatedly said it was not a game, they went into studio mode and made a quick song, even loaded up one Jeff had previously done.

So..um yeah, what video did you watch again?

Yes Wii Music for the PSP, so glad that I have neither. I'd rather buy every version of a PSP & dozens of copies of the Darkstalker compilation game for the PSP than play 3 minutes of this musical toy.

I think that the advantage for this is for those times when you're out and get a beat going in your head.  This gives you the chance to lay it down somewhere for use later.

For beginners, I recommend MAGIX Music Maker. Just don't tell a "pro".

don't think I could deal without support for a MIDI controller, I don't like plotting out melodies from scratch using a sequencer only. but this really is neat, and pretty solid for someone's first step into this kind of software. makes me want to boot up reason and throw down for real real

When I was in college, part of my course was sound design, which really isn't my thing, but this is actually pretty cool for what it is. If you are into this stuff I bet you would get into this. Also, I really like how they made the screen look like a extension of the PSP. Nice touch.

I think it's an awesome idea for someone looking to get into beat making. I started with the MTV Music Generator back in 98, and used it to death. I would totally buy this for someone who doesn't really have the money, or ambition to steal music programs out there, and wants to get into making. //K!LL@BEAT$Y0.

People, stop directly comparing this to Korg DS-10. Sure they're both music making software for gaming machines. Just like how Final Fantasy can't be directly compared to Fable even though they're both RPGs.

Having said that, I can't wait for the coming iPhone version with touchscreen support.

As for the program, I'm mildly impressed. Thought it would be much simpler. Entry-level music toys have gone a long way since the 90-s.

Actually, I *WILL* compare it to the Korg DS-10 seeing as they are gunning for the same market and are the closest to equals you can find here.
This "game" looks like an absolutely terrible idea. Who the hell is this supposed to be marketed too.
People with a vested interest in this would be using immensely better software on their PC and people with no intention getting really into this will be turned off by the cumbersome way it's supposed to ease you into making music.
I thought the Korg DS-10 was a pretty useless product, but at least it was an inherently good product.
This looks even more restrictive.
Who would want to make music this on this with it's tinny speakers and tiny screen?
This game was obviously supposed to ride on the wave of popularity that rhythm games have now.
And they've shoddily slapped Timbaland's name on it to appeal to the kids.
It's obvious that wasn't even the original idea what with how little the "gameplay" actually has to do with him and the ultra generic avatar that's supposed to be him.

Reminds me of Music 2000 that I spent quite some with on PS1. It was pretty fun. Also tried some Music 3000 on PS2, but not much.

EDIT: Oh I guess that's the PAL name of the MTV Music Generator they mentioned. I guess they don't like numbers over in the US, same with Wipoeout 2097 was called Wipeout XL in the US.
