Ok, I love Cave Story but this looks like ass. It's like the perfect example of how sprite graphics can look better than 3d graphics, even when they're really simple.

I'd like to know a bit more background to the story.

Am I the only one who doesn't hate the new polygonal look? I mean, yeah, the old sprites look nice, but this is totally fine. I mean, if you hate it you can still just go play the old Cave Story if you want; it's still free and has been ported to a whole bunch of places by now. The graphical upgrade is just another look, the gameplay hasn't changed and that's really why Cave Story is so good, not the art.

Bah Gawd I love Cave Story. A lot of other fans probably hate the graphical update, but I think it looks pretty good. The new music doesn't sound that bad either.

This is sad. Make a new one in 2D instead. Or, even better, leave this IP alone.

There goes Brad being Brad. I don't usually get too bent out of shape about the pulling of brads but that save point, just passed it up without thinking. Also why is this game so dark and concealing the enemies.

New look is looking REALLY bad, the main menu music is still sounding REALLY awesome. Really some of the best menu music in years and years, still.

I hope there's a way to just buy Danny B.'s remixed soundtrack, because that's literally the only part of this version that looks appealing to me. Ugh!

New OST sounds good, but as the duders mentioned the full 3D mode looks really dark and messy. That classic mode did kinda help, since the sprites stick out more then. I'm sorta 'meh' on this.

The original PC version has been freeware from the start and is still the superior version, I don't see why someone would want to pay for this. I'd rather just donate money straight to Pixel, that guy is talented as hell.

I think Pixel said he wants to make a Cave Story 2 now that this is out. I kind of want to buy this because it sounds good and the graphics are alright, but only at a discounted price.

I don't have a 3ds but I wanted to get this eventually, now I don't...I've only played a little of the original on the pc, but this just looks really annoying. Forget the 3d or the graphics, the entire game looks like a resident evil with the lighting and complete darkness.

I don't think that mode has the right to be called "Classic." I'll stick to the original on the internet.

Loved this game on Wii. Graphics look decent for this. Don't have a 3ds but I'll need to go through it again because I didn't get the best ending.

You're not the only one. I think the new look is okay. The original still looks "better" IMO, but the new look is cool too. Haters are gonna hate, but I for one and down for one more Cave Story.

The original game has a special place in my heart and I have no idea why they made this. Why didn't they look at the first renders of the 3d models and the 3d levels and say "yep, the sprites look better" and just scrap the whole thing? There's no way anyone who knows about the original Cave Story will buy this.

Every time a game gets a new release with 3D slapped on it, an angel dies.

Wow, have to say that the unlockable thing of using the sprites on the 3d mode just has to be the stupidest idea seen in a while with games, looks awful with those sprites mixed with 3d stuff.

While they're at it, why not make an updated 3D version of Mega Man 9 and 10?

Oh wait, no, that would be completely missing the point of the game.

And even as far as 2.5D platformers, this game seems to bone that up, in that if you learn any lesson from 'Splosion Man/New Super Mario Bros./Donkey Kong Country Returns, it's that regardless of the fact that you have a 3D engine to work with, you have to make EVERYTHING very bright, so that enemies, projectiles, environment hazards, and most importantly your player character are all very well defined and not easy to miss. But hey, they fucked that up too and made the game all dark and muddy.

This looks like a very bad version of this game.

But I highly recommend the WiiWare/DSiWare/PC versions. A great game that I think you can still find for free. Lots of depth and multiple endings / playthrough possibilities.

Man this is an ugly version of a great game.

Sure it was, Brad, sure it was. But on topic, I am also having trouble telling where the platforms are in this game. Not the best version of the game, by far.

I beat this on the Wii and enjoyed it, but don't think I'll want to play it again.

Also, I prefer my sidescrolling platformers to be 2D. I don't understand the New Super Mario Bros thing of going all polygonal. It looks better as really well animated sprites or hand drawn animation. Donkey Kong Country Returns gets a pass because the original game was basically trying to be polygonal but there wasn't the technology for that.

On that note, though, I don't want fake old games. Mega Man 9 and 10 are terrible, terrible games and I love me some NES Mega Man. I'd rather have new NEW Mega Man that's in 2D and is not made my Inti Creates. Also, Nintendo needs to make a huge, expansive 2D Metroid game that's totally 2D sprites and everything.

The 3D treatment just seems to make this harder to play, as far as I can see... What with the darker graphics, less definition in enemies and items, and the constantly swaying camera making me all disoriented... Perfect example being the unnecessarily dynamic camera in Arthur's house just making the house look more confusing than it should, and the part where Brad didn't realize you could jump over that ledge before the boss. I wouldn't have guessed that, either, if I didn't know ahead of time.

Cave Story wasn't a Flash game. It was freeware.

Cave Story is a great game, but I really don't like these graphics. Everyone should just play this in 2D.

Waiting for the FPS version...

Always great to know that companies are increasingly willing to release inferior versions of already extant games =|

Everyone with any interest in Cave Story, please follow this guy's advice. If you really want to play it on your 3DS, buy the DSiWare version for $10. You can actually see the platforms and enemies in that version, unlike this $40 retail version.

Or alternately, buy it for WiiWare, or download it for free on your PC. Seriously, any version but this $40 3DS version. Please, I beg of you.
