Quick Look: Cave Story 3D

Anyone else have them talking in the left speaker only?

Sound design and music is amazing but the graphical treatment not so much. Everything is so much darker and saturated... and why is the EGG CORRIDOR BLUE TINTED?! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE RED!!! It definitely gives the game a much blander, uninteresting and unexciting atmosphere than the original.

The new graphics made it lose its charm and is a little bland. It does look nice in some parts.

cave story is amazing, this looks like they made it less amazing. why?

Great quick look! Always good to see you guys doing 3DS coverage, Indie coverage, and especially both. Couple sticking points, though...

What's with the 10 minute quick look? I guess it's 'cause you guys are so busy? I mean, I realize we saw the basic mechanics of the game, but you could use that idea to say no quick look needs to be more than 10 minutes. I was really hoping to get a good, long look at a lot of the game to see how the graphics looked in action.

I think you guys can give up on using the silly 3DS-cut out display with tiny videos. I realize it might be a legal requirement from Nintendo, but if not, please consider on a game-by-game basis whether it's appropriate. Sure, some games do have stuff going on in both screens, and we'll benefit from seeing that. This game had nothing happening down there. You could have made that video full screen, no problem. We're savvy enough customers to realize that if we blow up the video to fit a 42" TV, that even it makes the game look really low-res and aliased, it's not going to look like that on our system. Whenever I see those tiny versions of handheld video with a massive border it feels like someone's trying to trick me, or that they're talking down to me, as if I wouldn't be able to figure out what the game would look like on a handheld unless they made it the same size.

I ended up just downloading the video, recentering it on the top screen, and blowing it up to full-screen, as I often wind up doing with your 3DS/DS coverage. Which is a big pain.

I hope you'll consider offering some full-screen 3DS coverage from time to time.

I don't like the look of those areas. I was also having trouble seeing stuff in the video and that was never an issue with the original. It's still a great game though.

IT'S REALLY DISORIENTING

Really not liking what Nicalis is doing with this game. It really does lose a lot of its charm with the new graphics, and it sucks that this'll probably be a lot of peoples first exposure to Cave Story.

Aside from the other arguments about switching to HD for non-subscribers, I have to chime in that the first statement is factually wrong. Non-subs have always watched in 360p. Whether this should change is another debate.

Anyone know if there's a way to play the up-rezzed version on PC? (Not this horrible 3D mess, I mean the @D-but-smoother version)

I saw the picture and thought it was some new pokemon game and ash was back in action!

They're taking away features from non-subscribers. Something they said they would never do. This is bullshit, and they should be called out on their bullshit, I don't care how you or they feel about it.

My main complaint is the Youtube player. Ugh, just ugh.

The 3Dness isn't that bad, but it reminds me of that time of 2.5D platformers on the PS1. Not really a period I have many fond memories of.. Except maybe Tombi/Tomba.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure it has always been like that, right? And HD video has never been for non-subscribers, so... I really don't see what the issue here is.

Oh, actual complaint about the video quality though, what's up with the audio balance? The left channel is fine but the right channel is super quiet! Cool quicklook though. I'm not sure I like the artistic direction they took, but at least they're continuing to release this wonderful game to a wider audience.

Yeah, this version really seems to be inferior.

The PC version is far superior to this. What's wrong with throwback pixel art graphics? I don't see why they felt the need to mess with the awesome art style.

I spend the $50 to support Giant Bomb/Whiskey Media in what they do, which is create awesome content. If you don't think the stuff Giant Bomb/Whiskey Media puts out there is worth a measly $4.17/month then by all means go to those "other websites".

Personally I'm sick of sifting though these video quality complaints in every single Quick Look comment thread to find actual posts related to the game. Go create a thread about it in the forums if there isn't one already. This is getting old.

That is nice. Just because you can afford it and other people don't doesn't make you a 'grown ass man'. I'm going to assume that not everyone that complains about the subscriptions is a kid living in his Parents house and some of these people can't legitimately afford it.

If they did in fact say turn on their word and start charging for things that existed before subscriptions. Then people have every right to complain. That is what you get when you lie to people, you get called out on it.

Comments and stuff about this game are getting kinda hipster "remember when this was cool!?" So that kinda sucks. Yeah, they redid the graphics, but it's not a huge issue, I think, because it still seems like a good game.

@Nectaria: I'm an ashhole. That's actually what he calls his fans. ICP has the juggalos and Ash Ketchum has the ashholes. I don't really have any beef with Ash but I think the character for Cave Story looks like him. Truth be told, I actually thought Cave Story was the title of the game, Tail of the Sun. Which makes this all amusing for me. I loaded the QL thinking they remade the game that is actually called Tail of the Sun and then I see Ash Ketchum shooting things in a cave.

I don't like any of the update music for this game. I bought it on mac and was really happy the included the original music as an option because the redone music sucked in comparison, and this isn't any better.

also, jumping IS very floaty in the original.

This Quick Look just makes me sad.

I remember playing Cave Story years ago on PC and it blew my mind. I've played it through multiple times and it is genuinely one of the very best games I've ever played. Part of its charm was the retro style graphics. The game just had a clarity of vision that only comes when something is such a labor of love.

And then I see this....and it's like the game lost its soul. Maybe it'd feel different if I'd never known the original Cave Story?

It's been like this since the game was first announced.. Pretty pathetic really, especially coming from people who'd probably usually argue that "graphics don't matter". Apparently they do, huh?

That said, I've never played through the original version. I was waiting for it to be released on the DSi and it still isn't out over here.
