Quick Look: Deadpool

Oh boy, now I get to see what I passed on when I saw it for pre-order on steam!

Can't say I'd be super surprised if this game isn't great.

God, this game looks rough.

I was hoping this would be great. I was not expecting this to be great.

It's kind of hard for me to watch two guys talk about Deadpool as if everything recent is all there is to say about him. You should read Deadpool Classic, it's emotionally charged and genuinely funny; the defining characteristic not being self awareness, but irreverent witticisms. Summing up Deadpool with this game or any of his recent comics is like trash talking Star Trek because of The Final Frontier, Nemesis, and the most recent Star Trek: The Video Game. It's unfair and more importantly, uninformed.

The plot and HUD aesthetic remind me and make me wish this game was more in the style of Comix Zone(1995).

But that wont happen with Daniel Way writing it. Someone else should have been the writer.

I played through this mission they played through and some more. To say it's "good" would be a stretch but it isn't bad either. It's passable for sure though.

That's problem number 1. The fact that it looks like it plays like shit as well doesn't help.

I really hate that Daniel Way's Deadpool has become the one to be portrayed in all video games.

It was he alone that turned Deadpool into a meme spouting, fourth wall breaking clown. Other writers portray him more as a badass mercenary that just doesn't give a fuck about anything.

Also Jeff isn't wrong. Liking the current incarnation of Deadpool is certainly a requirement of this game. As a fan of the character (simply because he's exactly the opposite of most of the other comic characters I like) it plays well.

Granted Deadpools beginnings were far more gritty and dark, but I think comics benefit from a character who's just this silly and random.

Does anyone here read the Deadpool comics? I've just subscribed to the standard one. I can unsubscribe at any moment, so it's not really a commitment. Just curious if it was any good.

From some of the comments it looks like there's more to Deadpool than meme spouting and breaking the fourth wall, but this version is the one that always seems to be used which is unfortunate.

Seems Okay. A bit generic, but okay. It just seems to try too hard. Might get it when it ends up in the bargin bin.

The game looks alright. I can't really imagine something that appeals to a niche audience to be mass marketed without stepping on a lot of toes. So either people that like Deadpool won't like this, or people that don't know much about Deadpool won't like this. I bet the focus groups were rough...

Been a while since we had a good "the game is boring us to tears" quick look. Stay Strong duders.

Agree/Disagree: Deadpool is the Family Guy of comic book characters.

I know this game is average at best but it doesn't really do anyone a service if both people doing the quicklook are so ho-hum about everything, lol. Ryan barely looked like he was paying attention through this and just button mashing and not worrying about the combos or varying up his playstyle. Just saying. Even playing DMC like this would make the game seem bad.

It's like, when Duke Nukem makes those jokes it's funny and ok. But Deadpool, it just seems forced and... bad.

I wonder what the Norhie award will be like this year?

This seems like a game I could enjoy. Kinda don't trust Ryan's opinions on how the gameplay feels since he's not a guy who has any attention span during tutorials so he's usually pretty clueless what he is doing wrong. Not saying the game doesn't have a certain amount of noticeable jankiness.

@freakgirl: I will probably get it too if it goes on sale. It just weirds/interests/bugs me how things that appeal to a known small audience are being marketed and sold to reach this gigantic seemingly amorphous grey audience. It's interesting/terrifying.

I'm getting a Jim Carrey as The Mask vibe from the character portrayal.

Didn't look as bad as they made it seem. No GOTY quality but a good palette cleanser from all the super serious games out now. Might be a good rental or discount buy later. Ryan seemed lost half the time and Jeff Jeff'd all over the QL.

No... just no. Duke Nukem was NEVER funny and his "jokes" never qualified as such. Just went back to the old game and that's just as badly written as Duke Nukem Forever. Still an awesome game though, but Duke himself was always a piece of shit

what are these "other games" that have done humor right? they often say humor in a game is hit or miss and that other games have done it better. Which games?

Also, would this title fall squarely into the value/middle tier of games that they have said has gone away this generation? granted it is only $10 cheaper, but to deride its polish if it is a value title seems hypocritical.

Game looks average, comedy seems really bad with a few hints of funny (I liked the Tutorials reacting to him ignoring them, and the idea of Nolan North talking to Deadpool) so it fits well with what Daniel Way has managed to do to the comics. It's a shame they didn't bring on some of the writers who wrote Deadpool back when he was funny in Deadpool & Cable or even more recently the Uncanny Xforce.

@zevvion: The recent Deadpool comics have been alright. I think it's a step up from the Daniel Way stuff, but still a bit short of the old Joe Kelly run. Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn are writing some quirky stories with some decent gags while lacing in a small bit of actual storytelling so far, but the selling point for me has been the art. Tony Moore (of Walking Dead) and Mike Hawthorne have been killing it!

Probably Saints Row the 3rd.

Ok does it not bother anyone else that the sound made when you need to reload is lifted straight out of the Transformer games High Moon did?

About 100 times better than what I was expecting. Meh.

I actually think this game is better than what Ryan seems to believe it is....

I'll take this over another by the numbers spider man or transformers game any day!

Also the end of the level sold me on the game...

I had to stop watching halfway through as it became clear that the guys' opinion on this just doesn't match up with mine. I chuckled with mirth several times, the combat seems totally fine, and I like this genre of game quite a bit. Wonder how much of this is post-E3 blues?

Seems like there are some good jokes scattered throughout Deadpool the game, but the timing and placement is very off and the jokes that fail are trying too hard.

I don't see why they couldn't have made this into a lower budget game focusing more on the character and less on production. They could have even turned it into a Marvel series but swapping characters for each iteration.
