Wow, this really looks great. The art direction is fantastic and the gameplay seems engaging as well. My only complaint is the lack of voice acting. It really could have given this game even more depth and personality. But regardless, it seems worth experiencing. The Wii is definitely offering some great games this fall between this, DK, and Epic Yarn.

So it's a mediocre platformer with nice art direction..
I don't get where all the hype came from really.

That intro is fucking heavy.

The concept is fantastic, but the implementation of paint/thinner is way too restricted and narrow. It's obvious that you can't dynamically change everything, but they should have masked it more.

Also, the the way Mickey "leaks" reminds me of Princess Mononoke and its demon monsters.

I was worried people would shit on this game for no good reason.  Granted it doesn't really take that much of an innovative approach, the game is at least a competant platformer and utilizes a great artstyle and story conceit.

The quality later on is predicated on how much hand holding and impact the choices you make have.  Honestly reading these comments I feel like people have never played a video game before.  This is what platformers that people love have been for years.  That may be a valid criticism but not strong enough to dismiss it entirely.

I also don't get where people have this notion of what this game should have been.  I was super excited to see more of this game after E3 this year which is pretty much the same game now.  This game was never sold as anything but this.  Everything else is people's imagination.

The only thing I can't stand is the hand holding as an adult and I bet for a lot of children would be problem as well.  Beyond that I find no reason to complain here.  I can see it being a breeze of a game to enjoy your way through and enjoy the art style.

Hey if reviewers say the game drags and/or holds your hand too much then fine.  But honestly the game so far is not better or worse than what a platformer should be honestly.  It goes to show that people who think a game fails if it's not a 9.5 or 5 star game still exist and still suck.

A load of some really great concept art was revealed before the game was announced, after it got a lot of attention it was revealed that it was indeed part of a game that was rumored to be in development, that game was code named Epic Mickey.  The name got a lot of buzz and to capitalize on said buzz they kept the stupid name that means nothing to people who weren't part of that initial hype crowd.  18 months later we have a game that finally comes out and does not look anything like the concept art and is an average platformer with some interesting mechanics and Warren Spector's now mandatory good/evil decision format.

The devs aren't skilled in platformers, are bound to the restraints of the Wii hardware, and the crowd that generated all the buzz isn't the crowd that buys Wii games.

It looks alright, but by dumbing it down so far for the E for everyone crowd it's lost a lot of appeal to more experienced gamers.

This really looks cool. It's seems like they've some how created an even more interesting world out of Disney's character's. And I don't even like Disney that much.

Besides the horrible name, this looks amazing, especially the art direction. Not even a big fan of Mickey Mouse or Disney, but I am a fan of amazingly done artwork.  As somebody has a lot of friends who work with this engine, what they've managed to do with it is even more incredible.

Hoped for a bit more Warren than Walt - a bit too dark for a kid's game (especially one so rooted in the Disney mythos).

The last Mickey game I played was the one the SNES (the Magical Quest or something like that), and that was fun. Curious to see how this one is.

I am legitimately shocked that this game does not have voice acting throughout. Otherwise, looks like it could be a fun platformer, though the beginning from this QL is a step-by-step, hand-holding drag. Surely once the game opens up it will be better, but I'll wait to hear what reviewers say.

I don’t know if you can draw parallels to Gilgamesh exactly, but what I think is really fascinating here is that Mickey, and by extension the Disney company is not being portrayed as anything like the good guy. Every reason the Wastland is fucked up is Mickey’s fault. He cast off these characters in his rise to power, and he placed them in this destroyed state. This game forces him to directly come to terms with everything the Disney company has lost. Its heart, its soul, everything. I’d say that’s well worth the price of admission. I can only wonder how the story is going to be resolved.

@Tuffgong: Here's the problem; there are roughly FIVE platformers this good on the Wii this year alone. There's Super Mario Galaxy 2, DKCR, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Super Meat Boy, and Sonic Colors. Most of those are probably better than Mickey; a couple are probably about as good. If this game came out last year (when there were zero competent platformers worth talking about) it would matter more, but in a year where platformers are not only good but are excellent, it's not good enough just to be competent.

my biggest problem with playing the game is that it is in SD. The game looks great so just port it to the ps3 and it would be even better.

Back in the day, Disney Parks made you buy packs of tickets for each ride.  You only got so many tickets per packs and the best rides were "E".  I remember those days and that was in the late 70's early 80's at Disney World in Florida, so they still had the ticket books only a few decades ago.

They might have chosen text over voice because it will be easier to port to the Japanese market.

@leekspin:

a quicker look than the 1 hour+ quick looks they've had recently.

Hey, it was actually almost 38 full minutes of gameplay, it almost took as long before you got to see any gameplay in the GT5 Quicklook.

For everyone saying that they should port this to the 360/PS3, you are being very optimistic cause I highly doubt they would put much effort into uping the resolution on a game developed in SD quality. If they wanted to do a proper HD port they'd pretty much have to redo all of the graphics and that would take much more time than they'd be willing to give. Of course I could be completely wrong considering I have no game industry experience, but if it were this easy to port to an HD console then NMH: Hero's Paradise would've been out a lot sooner

I hear the pacing's more like some of the N64 platformers like Banjo-Kazooie, so even though it's fairly slow-paced, it gets much better with time.
