Quick Look: Double Dragon Neon

I do not know what to think about this game...Skullmageddon's voice was legit hilarious though.

Have to say, I really enjoy this game's style.

This looks like it'd be a fun co-op game, but rubbish single player. I also now decree that all co-op modes be named bro-op!.

As someone who loved Double Dragon as a kid, I had fun with the time I spent with DDN. Out of all of the retro beat-em-ups of the last few years, it definitely gets the pacing right; for example, Scott Pilgrim and Castle Crashers were completely interminable for me, whereas this game moves at a breakneck speed. Even with the amount of grinding and trying different techniques I did, it's 2-3 hours long at the most.

@TeflonBilly: Thank you for knowing about the Matt and Woolie video. They obviously 'get' this game, which I feel is paramount to getting enjoyment out of it.

Skullmageddon is Skeletor right? Is that what's going on? The weird voice fits perfectly....

got this for free on PSN and never played it. Looks alright though! gonna give it a try, hey, it was free!

Oh shit did they got the skelator voice from robot chicken for the skull boss???

I really hope Ryan and Jeff give this game more of a chance. I got a feeling that they were begrudgingly enjoying themselves towards the end of this Quick Look.

A shame they never bothered trying the duck dodge, Gleam, parry system or trying anything else than regular punch and kick to get some combos going. And they never explored any of the other magic abilities either which are fun.

I honestly loved this game. It has great style, amazing music and a pretty impressive system in it for a brawler. And it's a shame that Jeff thinks it is tarnishing the Double Dragon legacy when it actually has a lot of reverence (And some funny irreverence) to the series as a whole. A lot of great little in jokes which you'll only get if you're familiar with the series.

Also Skullmageddon is the best villain of the year. I'm calling it! The voice actor for him is amazing.

I've mentioned it on the board, but I probably wouldn't have given this game a second glance if Matt and Woolie hadn't made this awesome video about it. One gaze at this and I knew I had to get this game.

This is WAY BETTER, watch this instead.

This game doesn't seem as bad as Jeff was making it out to be. Looks pretty phenomenal tbh.

This actually looks like a fun game if you've got someone to play with. Combat doesn't look very good but all the other systems seem neat.

This looks terrible and kind of really great all at the time time. Might buy when on sale by a larger margin.

It totally looks decent for a game that is free on PSN. I'd even be willing to buy it for like 7 or so bucks as a co-op romp. I guess regular price is $10 on PSN / 800 Allards which isn't terrible.

I know deep down that this game isnt all that good. But screw it i love it anyway.

Jeff is being way to hard on this game.

This looks kind of... great? Seems like if they wouldn't have slapped the Double Dragon name onto this game people wouldn't feel nearly as burned about it. That crazy randomness to it looks funny, I think, and the improvements to the systems sound smart.

I have this on PS+ but haven't played it yet because of all the trash I've heard spoken of it, but I think I'll try it at some point now. Still need to play Scott Pilgrim first, though.

Fun fact: Being number 1 or 2 on the leaderboard for a week will net you dozens of random friend requests. Not saying this was a particularly difficult feat to accomplish but I figured what the hell, usually don't get games at release. Not too sure how I feel about it though, might be the last time I bother with such a silly thing.

This genre needs diagonal attacks if it's to move on, or just full 3d combat.

This game seems fun in a completely stupid and tongue-in-cheek way. I'm not sure how much more mileage the "self aware 80's camp" has, though.

The game's style is great and the mechanics are fun. Jeff and Ryan didn't even use the roll/dodge GLEAM mechanics in the quicklook because 2-player is easymode and button mashing apparently works fine. If you play solo you get a more subtle experience.

Jeff's comments at least give me context to understand why he didn't like the game, but as someone who has no reverence for the "serious" DD games, I think Neon is a great brawler that stands on its own merits.

It's polarizing. What's worse is that until you get a tape set to around level 7, it's not fun to play. But once you do and you get a handle of all the mechanics it's...easy enough to go through and see all the funny stuff (because I would never say this game gets fun).

I think Jeff nailed it at the end there. When the game is being crazy and new, it's great. When it's trying to be Double Dragon, it's terrible. Unfortunately it's about a 30/70 split, respectively.

Looks like a pretty decent reimagining of the game to me. Can imagine it's a great nostalgia trip if you still know people you used to Double Dragon or similar games with.

Pretty much. Love the look. Dialogue is dumb fun. Yeah, just that beat 'em up game play that holds it back.

The only thing I could think about while watching this QL was Big Trouble in Little China...

I haven't played this, but it seems more suited to the RetrowareTV crowd than this audience.

Also the boss is clearly supposed to be Skeletor, not sure if it's the same voice actor, but that's definetly what they were going for.

I'm about 200% more interested in this game after the QL, I have zero reverence for Double Dragon though; I'll probably get it if it comes on sale or EU plus.

I don't give a shit about Double Dragon... so maybe that's why I absolutely love everything about this game?

So I picked this up for free on PSN+ and got pretty far, and I feel like jeff is way harsh on it in the beginning. Granted, I have no nostalgia for DD, but know enough about it that this bears little resemblance. That being said, I think it's for the best. While the combat can be annoyingly animation heavy, the music is GREAT, the visuals are pretty nice, and the upgrade systems are just enough to keep it from getting too repetitive. If you have PSN+ and its still free (which I think it is) you should definitely check it out. Also, it looks way more fun "bro-op" than single player, which is how I mostly played it.

Yeah.... this QL made have turned me around on this game. Looks like silly fun but I still hate beat em ups so I doubt I wanna play thru it all. Everything around it seems great tho. Skullmaggedon was pretty funny.

For a game Jeff has been taking a big dump on for the past couple weeks, this game looks pretty alright!
