Oh Brad, don't "make a b-line for the exit." You need to grind in each sector if you want to be equipped for the end game.

I bought it last night and have rather enjoyed it so far. It's tough when you get boarded by enemies but if you withdraw to the med bay you can heal while you fight. At least until the baddies take out your life support and you run out of air.

This would be an awesome tablet game, here's to hoping they'll develop a version for iOS/Android. Btw, my friend commented that it reminds him of a sci-fi Oregon Trail, and that really made sense to me. Instead of food being your progressor, the rebel fleet pushes you along to keep you motivated forwards. Awesome game so far, finally got passed sector 6.

I was just about to say this - this would make a great tablet game, and maybe even a phone game if it could be streamlined enough for a small device.

That Engi ship is amazing. Drones and ion weapons are very powerful, indeed. If you can get a drone recovery arm, you almost don't need to worry about drone parts. It recovers any that aren't destroyed every jump, and enemies only occasionally kill your drone. They're far better than missiles. One defense drone, one attack drone, an ion weapon or two, and upgraded shields is my new favorite build.

Very unforgiving games with permadeath, randomized levels and encounters, a focus on getting as far as you can before dying an inevitable death, until the metagame (whether it's on your own expanding knowledge of the game or unlocking additional tools to use in subsequent playthroughs) allows you to reach some kind of ending, which usually turns out not to be the ending at all and just opens up an even greater challenge for those with the patience to keep at it, as opposed to the very standard grind of starting a game at the start and ending a game at the end that one playthrough representing the entire experience. Actually pretty specific. Specific enough to warrant a term to describe it. Roguelike-like.

You know what game fits all of those criteria? (except randomized levels, but not all Roguelikes have randomized levels)

Pac-Man.

And if you remove the "inevitable death" part, you get Torchlight on hardcore! And if you remove randomized + permadeath, you get Super Meat Boy? Anyway, I'm not sure what your point is. Pac-Man, being a high score game, doesn't have an intended ending, and the randomized aspect makes up about half of what constitutes a roguelike-like.

Oh, so now you're changing your definition, eh? This argument is over. If you're not going to be consistent, why bother? Some people these days. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

No, that's what you were doing. Your argument was to change the definition, and like I said, I don't understand what the point of that was.

been waiting for something like this. I always used to rant to my friends that I would have loved the idea of a space game where you COMMANDED your ship like they do in star trek instead of just flying around shooting. This is a great start to something that they should really expand upon. I want this, but in 3D like the Normandy and you can develop relationships with crew that might accidentally get killed with the randomization of story events. Heading to some end goal which isn't' the main draw, but the journey that's amazing. Races that have their own stereotypes that you learn over playing the game, and can learn from experience how to deal with them. Discovering what planets have the proper materials for upgrades.

Remake Starflight. Particularity the one for genesis.

SCOOPS

It's a reference to https://www.google.com/search?q=steve+hot+scoops+gaynor

Who pledged to the $100 tier on FTL's Kickstarter and therefore got his "name" in the game.

Aren't there extra lives in Pac-Man? Cause then that's not permadeath.

Well whatever, it's like saying Pac-Man is a third person puzzle platformer. The case could be made, but it shouldn't.

This game is really fun, but I'm getting destroyed at every turn. I wish there were cheats or a level editor to fuck around with. I kinda want to see what a fully maxed ship would look like.

I'm with you. Drones seem far more useful than manually using weapons. They fire allot faster and since you can effectively take down shields, they hit almost all the time.

The game really isn't as hard as people make it out to be. You just need to understand the mechanics and think about your options.

For example, lately I've been thinking about upgrading to level 3 doors and just opening the airlocks when I get boarded. It should kill them before they can advance far enough, while keeping my crew at their respective stations to be focused on destroying the enemy ship.
