I'm three minutes into this quick look and I've already been lead to believe that my phone has rung thrice in vibration mode. That low rumble is just real deceptive.

Populous was cool because each stage had different challenges to overcome. Like a game. This... Well I'm not sure what this is going to be yet. We'll have to wait and see.

RE: Tap vs Click. Given I saw Peter M. In a seattle coffee shop with one of the other 22 cans devs with tablets attached to their computers doing dev cycles and playing the game on the tablets, yeah, I'm pretty sure they're designing it for touch.

The Bach prelude that plays when you collect belief is the best thing about this game to me.

I think I'll pass.

Oh no, you guys started at the very beginning. The beginning is so bad. It changes laters on and isn't as bad. Your belief is collected into one building instead of dozens, and you could've shown the multiplayer. Actual multiplayer between you and another person - the one Jeff mentioned is just a set of mission-like things. Later you have the ability to pull multiple layers at once. so it's not one-at-a-time.

Beta has a preset map. Final game will have a multiplayer map the size of Jupiter, partly crafted by 22cans and partly procedurally generated. In the final game, you can scroll over to see other people playing, live. You can join them, battle them, or ignore them.

Final game is definitely free-to-play, since the game was announced. The beta is 20$. Bottom line is, unless you're really into betas and helping shape the final game, you really ought to just wait for the final game.

A few things: Double-right clicking the ground will eventually dig one layer down. So when Jeff said he had to dig out layers from the edge of the cliff to get a chest... not needed. Still kind of a pain in the ass though.
Also there will be no store, as feedback showed them that everyone hated the idea. So the gems can be mined instead.
You can also build "Settlements", which will gather all the belief in a radius so that you don't have to click all the huts.

That should clear up some of the "this game sucks" issues I have seen people having with the game so far...

This seems like an iPad game, all you do is click. Maybe I'm missing something but were is the strategy? or is it meant to be deliberately simple and relaxing to play? I haven't followed this game but it looks weird especially after i watched Molyneux's interview with Adam Sessler. What he said the game was and what it seems to be looks to be two very different things. But this is still early so maybe more stuff will be added but at the moment this looks like a nice looking Farmville.

@jeff, @brad, and @vinny really should track down the Peter Molyneux "keynote" from this past PAX if they really want to know what Godus has and what they plan for it.

Edit: Here it is.

The final game is going to be a big deal. I think that particular showing of the game is a good description of the scope of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKN7-BdeKzo

Though the PAX Storytime linked by Sergio should also be sufficient.

It does seem like it has potential, but they're definitely showing this a couple months too early it seems.

And if they're designing this around iOS devices, that's a potentially worrisome and crippling detail.

ill allways respect him for his early work as most people do, i think this quick look is the best example of what would rly work well, a remake of Populous

See this is the kind of thing that really makes me wish GB spent more time researching a game before jumping into QLs. Granted, sometimes the "i don't know what i'm doing" mentality produces entertaining videos, it can also have the negative effect of making a game look a lot worse than it really is. I wasn't interested in this game based on the video, but now I am thanks to your comment.

I always end up with way to many people and can't keep up and click them all, soon everyone's dead. Why do people don't go inside to rest and instead wait to die on the ground outside? I don't get this game.

In which Gamespot and Peter Molyneux take a look at a more complete version of the game. Probably a good idea to check this out if you're thinking of picking the game up - it shows off some of the (highly awesome) stuff that the final product will have.

I don't think I'll ever buy a early access game. Even if its something I'm super excited for, theres too much guessing. Like does this game suck or does it just suck right now.

@purplespandex: Yea. The only early access I tried were F2P ones. Played Warframe and it was fun, got my fill, and I may never go back even when the game is more fully fleshed out.

I like god games, so I'll wait for the full game to get the "real" experience and also wait on the business model.

Pretty unfortunate that Jeff didn't know you can double-click the right button to dig. After the first 10 minutes you're not really supposed to drag land anymore (before you get cliff sculpting).

Not sure if Jeff just isn't far enough into the game (i.e. the early access doesn't go far enough into the game) or this game is simply gather faith, use faith to make more land, populate land to get more faith.

Why do I want to play this SO BAD? I've watched TotalBiscuit's early look at it, he wasn't pleased, I watched VideoGamerTV's Matt Lee's saying outright that if was a god damned farmville game for PC, and now I've watched a Quick Look of it here, and all of the evidence so far says I should not under any circumstance buy this. Why do I feel the urge to buy and play this right now?

@jeff@brad You do unlock a power that lets you sculpt several layers of land at once later on, though it takes way too much time, I got it about 8 hours in. Even later you get an ability to gather all faith within one area, but even after almost 12 hours I haven't found the final card for my current age to move on to that age, which is pretty annoying. You can also kill wolves by clicking on them 5 times (each click uses 5 faith). They should probably cut that down to something that is more intuitive, since I'm sure most people would click once or twice, maybe three times and then think nothing will happen.

I think the speed at which they roll out new abilities is way, way too slow, the basic sculpting abilities should be rolled out over the first 10 minutes rather than the first 12 hours, the current way is just tedious and makes it feel like you aren't making any progress at all, and I'm worried that the grind for cards will be really terrible later on, it already kinda is. I'm hoping they read the feedback and will change most of this over time, because I think there's some promise to the game if they just make you feel powerful like in the Populous games, considering you're supposed to be a God. Also, in Populous 1, you didn't need mana to sculpt land, maybe you needed in Populous 2, which I've never played, and you certainly needed to in Populous: The Beginning, but in the original you can sculpt all land within the same screen as one of your followers, and there's no limit to how much you can sculpt as long as one of your guys is on the screen.

On what future God games need, how about Achron's time manipulation mechanics? A God should be capable of going back in time to undo what their followers do, shouldn't it? That is pretty much the Creationist's arguments to explain dinosaurs and all that stuff after all - God went back in time before he created Earth and placed bones there to make it look like Earth is older than 6000 years old? What if you could do that in a God game?
