Giant Bomb + more developer interview videos - touch based games quick looks = better Giant Bomb

Math. Catch it!

This game may be great, but it's explained within two minutes of coverage.

This argument over real vs. fake video games might be one of the most infuriating things I have ever read. You guys understand this is exactly equivalent to when Ebert stated that video games aren't art? It's the exact same mindset where someone thinks they have the definition of a concept and stands so steadfast to it that progress isn't achieved. Disallowing yourself to open up to more opportunities results in genres that only ever constantly regurgitate the same content once we establish that something has to be a certain way. Media is constantly changing and being built upon, but calling it fake games just because you don't like iOS is about as pointless a remark as you can make regarding this matter.

Also, what the fuck are you. 13? Your emotional outbursts aren't valid opinions.

If it's IOS mini games they should just do a round up and play a bunch of them. This feels like a pretty long video for what this game is.

If this were the hacking minigame in the next Deus Ex, Deus Ex would be penalized in all its reviews for having a tedious minigame that "shoehorns touch functionality" into it. But because it's on our wonderful phone from the benevolent Apple Corporation, it's meaningful. Yuck.

Well, it doesn't look "great," but otherwise, yeah, you're totally right. I thought they were going to do a big roundup of iOS games? That'd be useful. These long, dedicated QLs? Not so much.

I was disappointed with this game. I heard things like "Best game of the year so far" (Ben Kuchera) so I purchased it on a whim. It just gets too difficult too quickly. And not in a fun way, just in a super frustrating "why am I even playing this?" kind of way. The game seems straight up unfair at times. The player has little to no control of what is happening in the game, and more often than not becomes a game of chance. I wouldn't recommend buying it.

This actually does look like a neat puzzle game with an interesting gimmick and quite a surprising bit of variety surrounding said gimmick; the $5 pricepoint is a bit high I think, but I'd probably still buy it if I had a device to buy it on.

Now, as to the people saying that this game is bad and giving no reason as to why that is the case other than 'it's a mobile/iOS game!' I think there are a few things which need to be made clear. Yes, mobile games are, for the most part and at the present time, notorious for being exceedingly casual or cheap cash in, but this problem lies solely upon the developers and how they choose to utilize the tools they are given, not with the tools themselves. The same argument of 'the majority of games associated with X are terrible so X must be terrible' is made ad nauseum against motion control games, yet some developers have made rather good games utilizing motion control, showing that the fault lies on the shoulders of developers looking for easy money and not with the technology itself.

But I suppose one does not even necessarily need to look as far as motion control for a counterargument. A brief glance at XBLIG or around the Internet would quickly reveal that the vast, vast, vast (seriously, at least 85-90%) majority of indie games out there are either terrible or painfully mediocre. Therefore, using the same logic of "this game is crap because it's a mobile game and mobile games shouldn't get any attention because the majority are terrible," one can arrive at the conclusion of "indie games shouldn't get any attention because the majority are terrible and many are outright unplayable messes". Never mind the fact that from this pile of rubbish we've obtained Super Meat Boy, Castle Crashers, Star Stealing Prince, Fez, the Noitu Love series, I Wanna Be The Guy, Cave Story, La Mulana, Touhou, Last Scenario, Seiklus, Path of Exile, Narbacular Drop...no, the majority of games belonging to this category are terrible so the category as a whole clearly doesn't deserve any attention.

The current state of mobile games and the notorious reputation they have earned is the fault of unimaginative developers looking for an easy way to make money and an audience willing to oblige them, not in the games as a category. As it stands, Hundreds looks like it would easily offer up 5-10+ hours of gameplay and from this Quick Look alone one can see that it not only frequently innovates upon a simplistic premise, but that it also offers up a nice blend of careful puzzle levels, frantic fast-paced levels, and levels which have elements of both.

There is nothing wrong with not liking a game, but please at least have the decency to say more than the obligatory trio of "I hate it because it's a mobile game," "This game sucks because I hate games like this," or "This game is bad because it doesn't look fun". To those who have already done as such, thank you for making a comment which doesn't just take up space.

iOS games suck for quick looks. It's dumb because you can't see the touch points, it seems that the game is playing itself.

I'm not saying they should just show iOS games with someone filming them using the devices, but these two reasons are why iOS videos are dull.

I watched some Arkham City quick looks and it was like Batman was just running around by himself! I don't understand where the controls come in! I'm not saying they should just show console games with someone filming them using the controller, but... well, I just don't understand how Batman was running around and punching dudes.

That argument doesn't work, if you can't see why then that's your problem.

It also depends on the game, this one is extremely simple so it's not really an issue, many others just seem off when being captured, though.

I don't really understand how the mechanics of this game work based on the quicklook.

I feel like the game is nowhere near as infuriating as they are making it out to be.

Looks kinda cool, for about 15 mins.

But since I'm old and have been around the internet for ages, this feels like a flash game, and somewhere in my mind it feels kinda like a scam to pay for flash games. "They used to be free man"

also, get of my lawn damn kids!

Nice with content though!

@Huey2k2: You touch the numbered circles to make them get bigger with the goal of reaching 100. If a circle that's expanding touches another circle, you need to restart. There are spinning saws that'll bounce around the map that if a circle that's been increased in size/number gets touched by a saw, it'll reset back to zero. The little black circles with the red lines on them are player controlled circles that you can use to bounce things around/slow them down/block off an area with. The saws with the colored centers can be pressed to make them inert for a short time, with a counter in the middle to show how long they'll remain inert before they start sawing and bouncing their way around again.

'Hundreds' is the Haute Couture of Video Games (Ian Bogost)

Not sure if serious, but made me laugh anyway. I'm pretty sure it's satirical by this quote:

The iPhone might be a device one can use on the toilet, but Hundreds certainly isn't a game one would play there. Do players of Hundreds even need to use the toilet?

It's a game for men with blonde stubble and square chins and herringbone trousers. It's a game for women with perfect skin and long, thin fingers.

Switching to your iPad might make things easier (you do have an iPad, don't you?).

For despite its claims to inclusiveness, modern design works best when it's exclusionary and pretentious, when it speaks without saying anything but just by being there. Realizing such a feat for video games, a medium so much more popular than it is cool, is an accomplishment. That the creators of Hundreds may not know they did it is a secret that you and I can smirk about silently while we play it.

You guys have done at least three iOS Quick Looks where you've said "this is our first iOS Quick Look." :)
