So what I'm hearing is that this would be a better game if it used a real controller design. Say, more like a Dualshock 3 or 360 controller.

Just like every other Wii game.

Can't say I agree with a lot of Team Ninja's design decisions: auto-aiming, infinite health and missles by way of concentrating, and switching to first person by turning the remote.

That said, I'll probably pick this up when there's a price drop just to see the story between Samus and Adam.

I don't like how streamlined everything has become to make room for how inaccessible the controls are.  That said, I'm sure the insistence on using just the Wiimote was on the part of Nintendo.  It still looks like the Metroid I know and love, it just seems like what a 3D DS Metroid should be, rather than one on the Wii.

I feel like I have missed a lot by having only played Super Metroid.  Maybe I should pick up the Metroid Trilogy somewhere and catch up.

Good QL. The game was strange to me, and it's my first view of Metroid and Samus. I had some problems with the monsters, that worm thing looked cartoonish at one point, decent at another.  I heard the critisms on designed gameplay...I don't own a Wii so Idk.

But I kinda enjoyed the ql.

I'll try to be nice since so many are not :-P

The game doesn't look "horrible" or "crap" it looks "mediocre". In my opinion, the definition of a "garbage" game would be one on the level of that Ninjabread Man for the Wii. Metroid: Other M looks far from that.  I also am not surprised at how they're both talking in this QL and don't blame. Metroid games never got me in the mood for making jokes or yelling or whatnot: the slower pace of the games due to backtracking was always a "boring" one.

That's not to say, however, that this game looks spectacular. It looks bland, and I'll never, ever comprehend why analogue control was not implemented. The movement looks clunky and the auto-aim is a big bummer (but in pseudo-2D with a D-Pad I wonder how manual aiming would be implemented), coming back to why the heck they would use the control scheme they did. A "classic" controller isn't the solution, because the Wii remote/chuck replaces those fine. It's the "classic" control SCHEME that they should have stuck with.

Bleh, overall, just disappointed with the design choice regarding the controls. The Prime games were effin' great, seeing the boss fight MIGHT have helped me want it more.

The controls for this game look EXTREMELY CLUNKY.  From the auto targeting, pathing systems, and FPV to TPV switching, it seems like this game is going to be an exercise in frustration.

So i waded through 9 pages looking for a voice of reason and for the most part those responses were mild at best. Numerous complaints about the control scheme when 90% of you haven't laid eyes on the actual product much less experienced the interaction between the input device and the player. It reminds me of when i was a child and my mother would unsuccessfully attempt to introduce new foods into my diet. If it wasn't what I was used to I'd respond that it 'looked nasty' and refuse to try it. Then one day i grew up, realized how ignorant and childish it was to write something off just because it was different. Games not even out but maybe all of you got your hands on a review copy. Thats highly unlikely so anyone making definitive statements about the quality of the controls based on the 'look' of some gameplay footage or the 'sound' of another man's description is an idiot. Feel the controls then make a judgement.

P.S.  If you think feel or a sense of touch can be derived via proxy send me your g/fs contact info. You'll know whether it feels good or not from the footage I send you.

I lost interest in this game a while ago, the quick look has revived my interest though. It looks a lot more Metroid-ish than I was expecting.
I really hate the sound of the control scheme. It is really obvious that Team Ninja ONLY didn't use the Nunchuk because they needed an excuse as to why you can't move in first person.

@KwillyB: Gonna go ahead and post the common sense answer here. Brad and Jeff played it, and people are responding to their opinion trusting it's probably fairly accurate. Just think before you speak.

I still want a next gen-ish Metroid Prime game. Corruption doesn't count as it's more linear than the two before. Also that it came out on the Wii.

Seems like it's exactly what people expected Metroid Prime to be like before it was revealed to be in first person.

It also seems like it raises some good ideas on how Sonic could have made a better jump to 3D.

My main complaint with the game is the art style. While I love that it evokes the flavor of some of the old Metroid art, there's something off about it. Maybe the color scheme or something, idk. I like the cartoony designs, but something is missing.  The animation is fantastic on the other hand. That's how I always imagined Samus moving and shooting, and I'm glad Team Ninja capture that style.

As for the controls, I don't really get all the hate. Analog seems like it would have been better suited to the game, but  I don't see the huge deal. It looks like it plays fine, with a few hiccups here and there. Also, let's not forget that Prime 1 and 2 essentially had auto-aim and no one minded then.

d-pad control is what makes me want to play it, but I've never been in love with the Metriod universe.  I'll probably pick this up on sale at the end of the year.

Item Get Jingle == WEAKSAUCE!!!
Fuck you Team Ninja. You took away the only thing that mattered to me. :'-(

@Brad, it's not weird that the beam properties stack. That's how 2D Metroid goes.  Only the Prime trilogy broke that mechanic because you couldn't have a freezing lava beam.  Retro Studios didn't roll with frostfire.  But in Super Metroid you could enable and disable different properties at will, and Metroid Fusion you get to combine Wave, Charge, Wide, and Plasma. Pew! Pew!

A 3D hack&slash with 8-way control, automatic dodging, on-rails sequences and semi-automated first-person combat?

Holy shit. I didn't think it was possible to be that bad.

Looks like they casualized a lot of the mechanics to get a wider appeal. Like, how dodging is more or less automatic and you don't need to actively switch weapons.
I guess it makes it for a more accessible game or something?

Looks good though, I'm looking forward to play it for myself.

You can jump with the morph ball if you press 2 on the Wii remote, also you can shoot those stupid ramming robots while they're charging with your normal beam while you run around AND finally you can shoot a normal laser in first person by tapping the button.

Looks just as bad as I expected it. The lack of analogue control makes me want to give this a wide berth... As well as the fact that I'll not purchase another Wii title.

massive amounts of auto aim
auto-dodges every few seconds
infinite number of health regenerations
infinite number of missle regenerations

I didn't know this had Nintendo's self-playing  "Super Guide"  feature.

They took out almost all of the gameplay, need to explore (who needs health tanks or missles, just regen)crammed in lots of CG cutscenes full of bad writing and  bad voice work. A full-fledged console Metroid release for $29.99 after Amazon bonus credit and no sales tax, and I still can't pull the trigger. Never thought I would see the day.

I like a game that you have to learn to play a bit. It makes the game stand out and you'll remember it for years to come.

Also... the teasing with the boss was evil. I'm all curious now.

@ryanwho: Gonna go ahead and tell you to READ these comments.  Controls look like ass... no analog?sounds terrible - Pass. Its being treated like shovel ware when Brad still gave it four stars in the review. But my suggesting people actually try the game somehow falls into your realm of non contemplative - nonsensical dribble. Cancel your subscription to the hive mind and form an opinion about the game instead of treating someone elses opinion as gospel. Its called independent thought. Mines not supposed to look like yours. And mines is bigger so there.

This just seemsl ike an example of a game that could have been superb, but is heavily hampered by the console it is on.  They make it work, but everything about the game seems that they made it work in SPITE of it being on the Wii, instead of because of.  Overall just making the Wii a very poor platform for this (though understandably it will only be on the Nintendo console).

This game still looks terrible to me. It looks like they did wrong everything that they could possibly do wrong. I honestly don't understand anyone's excitement or how anyone has reviewed it positively, but I suppose that's the beauty of opinion.

The trickiest bit is trying to turn the controller in the middle of combat. It all seems so shoehorned-in.

I actually still want this game. It looks like a refreshing Metroid experience that I haven't had in quite some time.

As for the controls, I think it'll take a couple of minutes to get use to them before they no longer seem like an issue, like with most games I play where the controls don't grab me at first.

Also, I really like watching Samus throwdown with the larger enemies. Makes her even more badass than she already was.

If Giant Bomb stopped covering the Wii tomorrow would people honestly care? This looks archaic and cumbersome. I get the impression Jeff is completely bored with what he's watching. It's not just visuals that are dated on the Wii. Control schemes are stuck in 5 years ago too.

It's almost like this game was designed as the first 3D Metroid, as if the Prime trilogy didn't count. They even scrapped the art style and came up with something far less appealing (but still looking like it went in the exact same direction as the Prime artstyle, just more simplistic and bland.)

The comment Sakamoto made about how he wanted to make a modern NES game just fits perfectly.
