Quick Look: Necropolis

I like that when Alex asks Vinny "hows the rest of the game" Vinny replies with "lets check it out." Always enjoy his positive attitude even though from the Beastcast I already know he's not too thrilled with it.

EDIT: As a complete aside I think the font choice in this game is kind of misguided.

I saw this in a few different places review on ign or gamespot and total biscuit playing it I think. I can't say I was very impressed and someone mentioned this trend of no textures really needs to go! I don't care for this aesthetic at all and the naming all the items and giving them silly descriptions is kind of insulting to the player. Either way looking forward to watching this quick look regardless.

This game looks like it might be fun if they sped everything up by about 300% and added some combos or something.

I was pretty disappointed in this game. It sounds like a great idea, but once I got used to the speed of weapons and dodging and saw every enemy type, the only challenge was the occasion where there were multiple enemies coming at me at once.

Even then, as long as you don't overcommit on an attack animation, you can just poke them all down with relative ease.

I also wasn't a big fan of the jokey non-lore tone of the whole thing. I'd honestly prefer it if there was no text at all.

I feel like this game kinda has to be played in co-op to have any fun.

@humanity: same with regard to the positivity of these yuck looks. Austin was great at that attitude as well. Makes it more fun for me personally to watch.

Wow. An hour and a half was definitely way too long for this only okay looking game, but I'll be damned if I wasn't rooting for them to make it down one more floor. Great job fellas!

Seems to suffer from a bit of the same stuff that Krater did a few years ago. That extremely inconsistent tone, as if the writer, composer and art designer had no contact at all with each other and attempted to make wildly different games. Many of the sound effects don't mesh well with each other either.

The art style looks really good for the most part, got a bit of a Heavy Bullets vibe to it.

I wonder if they'll manage to make a good update on this like they did with Shadowrun Returns, which didn't have a great launch either.

Well the chicken merchant seems cool.

After Shadowrun Returns and the games that followed, i was ready to buy any game that Harebrained schemes released. That is until I heard that this game was a rogue-like.

And apparently it's not the best game according to early reviews. That's cool tho, one bad game shouldn't kill a developer. I'm still waiting for the Battletech coming next year.

To be fair, Vinny asked if he should keep going. This is Alex's fault.

For the amount of repetitive simple combat encounters it looks like things just have too much health/don't take much damage. Things could probably be paced much better if most enemies died in 2 to 4 hits.

I could watch vinny and alex mow a lawn and be entertained. They made a very plain game into a great video.

As far as the lawn mowing idea, if the site needs more premium content...

I have interest in playing this game but not for $30. I would spend at most $15 on this. I guess I'll have to wait for a Steam sale.

There's a lot of promise in this game. It feels like with some refinement in animation and design this could be something cool. Right now it feels like it got rushed out early.

This might be good when they eventually finish the game.

And the combat, and the AI.

I don't think anything can save the Borderlands-style writing though.

Yep, Thems the potions for winning! Actually, most seemed good, the trick being to drinking them before agro. The humor reminded me a bit of old (very old) Woody Allen if the theme was say Jewish instead of Necropolis.

The drums in this keep making me think "In the air tonight" is playing.

So much promise with this game.

As far as I can tell, almost entirely squandered.

This game screams boring. Boring combat, Boring graphics, Boring story.

I dig the super simple art style and it bums me out that this doesn't seem difficult or mechanically interesting enough to actually play.

Maybe during a distant Steam sale someday?

I had hoped this game would have turned out better. I did really like their trailers, though.

20 minutes in and I feel like I get the picture. How the hell did they squeeze an hour and a half out of this?

Old Meat Makin' Vinny is my favourite Vinny.

I don't know not sure if this would be fun to play or not but I enjoyed watching it and it bits and spirts I can see the humor being interesting. Definitely looks like it would need a controller though. Lack of an ability to save would get me likely as this looks like a 30 minute at a time game.

This game has all the elements i love about games. It's crazy how much i not care about this at all.

Despite all the game's shortcomings, this quick look has made me much more interested in trying Necropolis. I can imagine playing this in half hour sessions when I just want to sit on the couch and do a bit of low-stress hack 'n' slash exploring. I've seen quite a few criticisms of the procedurally generated dungeons, but during this quick look I was always interested in discovering what was around the next corner.

Unfortunately the awful writing is a big turn-off. Writers need to understand that if they're going to resort to gags that break the fourth wall, they'd better have some dynamite punchlines to make up for completely ruining my immersion in the experience.

The game is Vinny-proof. Smart.

This post made me listen to In Flames for 3 hours straight, hadn`t even thought about that band for probably 10 years.

I can't explain why exactly, but several times in the QL I thought Stein um Stein by Rammstein was starting.

Man, this game seems to have potential, but kind of weak all around.

Alex was on fire with the funny on this though.

Just read on Polygon that there were going to be changes for Necropolis patched in in light of the reviews and response they've received.

It's too bad that the launch version of this is bad. Hairbrained Schemes has made some great stuff. I am glad they came out and recognized that people didn't like parts of the game and how they play, and showed their roadmap to fix it and make it more fun.

And of course, always a joy to see Vinny and Alex just riffing on a mediocre game in the classic Giant Bomb "let's just chat over a dumb game" style.

I absolutely love the way this game looks and just various things like the title treatment. It's a damned beautiful game that almost tricked me into buying it, but I'm pretty glad I didn't. Which is all quite a shame, since hot damn this should be Extremely My Thing.

Man, turns out it's a really dangerous decision to theme your game around being uninteresting and not worth paying attention to or caring about.

This really feels like its a few good patches from being a fun game. Hopefully they get there (they did with Shadowrun).
