Also I find it funny that people would give Microsoft a hard time for the initial anti-consumer ideas on the Xbone and, apparently, give this mandatory microtransactions in first party games thing a pass.

If you are looking for games set in Rome that aren't hack and slashers I would look to the PC. You have stuff like Rome Total War 1 & 2, Europa Universalis: Rome, Grand Ages: Rome, Imperium Romanum and more.

The game doesn't seem aggressively horrible, just totally uninspired. Fat guy with long hair. Skinny guy with painted face. Choose one of 5 executions. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. And while the cut scenes looked nice, the in game action wasn't especially amazing.

out of all the launch games this is the one i'd like to play.

reminds me of Viking: Battle for Asgard, which got middling reviews, but I found to be awesome.

It doesn't look bad, really. If we could get this combat in the next Assassin's Creed I'd be pretty happy.

At one point developers will have to start depicting violence with the pain, fear and agony associated with it. This is way too silent and peaceful. Some would scream, others shout, many would drown in their blood, lose it, wander in despair or crawl away, but not that bullshit, only decapitated people die instantly and silently. Visually it's violent, but auditorily it is not. How hard it is to scream in a mic? When will a game be traumatic to listen to?

Brad is really coming up with excuses for this terrible game.

It's weird he would get so defensive over the Xbone's equivalent of Knack. A few years from now we'll all be laughing about these mediocre launch games.

After 3 Batman games and 5 Assassin's Creed games, I'm still not tired of this kind of combat so this looks like a fun launch title to me.

The microtransaction stuff rubs me the wrong way though. Looks completely unnecessary for the game though so I'm thinking I can pretend it doesn't exist.

Remember how folks largely shrugged off and made excuses for microtransactions in single-player, $60 games in the past year or so? You encouraged this.

Also: hair still looks mediocre.

(While examining the micro transaction page)

Vinny: "And how much is this game?"

Brad: "60 dollars"

Vinny: "eh"

I'm also curious what Vinny would think about the combat after becoming a Dark Souls convert.

I kinda wish they would have just ported the PC version of Crysis 3 to the Xbox One instead of making this.

If you are looking for games set in Rome that aren't hack and slashers I would look to the PC. You have stuff like Rome Total War 1 & 2, Europa Universalis: Rome, Grand Ages: Rome, Imperium Romanum and more.

What I'd love would be some sort of game that simulates all the shenanigans of the senate in the Republican era. EU Rome was a bit disappointing in that way, I mean there was only 1 consul, & no elections to the various positions, everything was by appointment. I dunno, something in the vein of Crusader Kings where you control the paterfamilias of a patrician family, but with more more emphasis on the political side of things. But then simulating politics in a video game is real hard to make fun I guess, not really seen it done.

But I do think it's fair to say that between strategy games, hack & slash games & the occasional city builder game (I remember the Caesar series fondly) there have been few things in games that have done Rome justice which is a shame because it's an incredibly rich & varied setting.

Halfway through the game they still tell you to use the right stick to look around? That's stupid.

No that's like in Gears when your told to press a button to see an 'event' you push across on the right stick in this for the same affect. :)

I want to thank Giant Bomb. Thank you for pumping out all this content for the PS4 and XBone launch games which only further reassures me that I made the right choice not buying either one of these consoles at launch. Not one of these launch games has made me say "I need this new box". Come on Sony, come on Microsoft, give me a reason to buy your console. Give me a reason to yes to next gen.

Man that was terrible! I think even brad couldn't be impartial on that.

I get Brads defense, he's probably reviewing it, I guess he'll struggle a 2, most likely a 3 star. This game screams PS3/360 launch, pretty graphics, reuse, rinse and repeat enemies. I mean look at Batman last gen goons compared to the 3-5 enemy looks exactly the same.

I will definitely pick this up when it is around $30-$40 or when it becomes a games for gold. Looks interesting and the combat seems competent. I really want a great game set in Rome or Greece, maybe this generation will shake things up a bit.

The camera in this game is way too close to the character, and in combat it doesn't look great either.

Graphics look about on par with Crytek's other stuff, though. Makes me a bit excited to see what Crytek can pull off in the future on this generation of hardware.

At least, I don't. This is a fucking disgusting practice and its in all of X1 exclusives (except DR3, that I know of). I was going to pick up X1 eventually but if this practice persist (on either console) i guess its time for me to go back to Nintendo/pc gamer again.

They also said Rome was sacked under Nero, but I chalked it up to Brad misremembering something. Maybe they were in another city that was being attacked and Brad confused it for Rome?

Understatement of the year. This game almost couldn't have LESS to do with historical reality. They didn't even bother trying to get the name of the protagonist right.

Funny that I remember that the devs claimed they had consulted 'historical advisors'. Somehow, I severely doubt it.

Because it's a slippery slope to influencing game design that encourages players to spend money to "get more" out of their game or creating barriers to artificially extend the game's length through grinding which also encourages players to spend money to make life easier (Crimson Dragon). It's gross.
