I love how the turrets on the start screen do nothing except shoot their own ship.

Maybe I'm rushing to conclusions, but the fact that they default to uninverted controls in a space combat game pretty much tells me the people who made this game weren't the right people for the job. I'll just have to go back and play some Freelancer if I want to get my space combat on.

Saw this on Steam and thought from the screenshots that is looked like fun, but now I see it is not what I wanted from a space-sim-shooter that I am longing for. One that is not hardcore x10.....

I don't understand their feelings on this game. I mean, exactly how many space sim fighter games have we been getting lately? And you're going to get hung up on the name? How exactly do you stay "faithful" to a 30 year old franchise that was extremely basic? I mean they reference the Yars Revenge. If you watch the old one, can you even tell WTF is going on?

The controls in this game made me very sad. When it locked up my 360 I didn't bother starting it back up.

Beh.

It had energy you had to refill, at least.

The whole point of Star Raiders was its urgency, doing things quickly. Crisis management, basically. Here it looks like you're shooting tons of triangles in static, samey missions that take too long.

I like the design for those big ships. And if someone had told me when I was a kid that the Star Raiders sequel of the future would have a transforming ship I would have probably died. But...

Take it away. Take it away.

I like, i mean, i don't like how Jeff is all zen'd in to this game but some games he just pops 'em in and starts playing 'em and is like "wtf is this". I like you Jeff, but please do some research for the games you Don't like. I'm a reviewer myself, i like to keep it objective.

If you really want to play a Space Combat game you can get The Patricians & Merchants Box on Steam for $2.49 right now. It has Darkstar One, Patrician III, and The Great Art Race. link

I went into this game excited to play some space combat on my 360 and came out feeling the exact same way Jeff does about it.

Why can't (or why won't) anyone make a decent console space flight sim these days? The Star Wars Tie Fighter and Rebel Alliance games from the PC used to be great fun and would be perfect with a game pad. So, a message to game companies - stop rolling out remakes of old 'classics' like Star Raiders and make a remake of a good flight sim like Rebel Alliance.

PS. Yars Revenge was a joke.

On the controls, at first it did look kind of bad given how difficult of a time Jeff seemed to be having.  Then he actually described them.  And nope, Jeff just sucks.  The need to roll and then pitch up or down to turn is not some rare advanced form of control.  That's how a flight sim game should be controlling.

The rest of the game definitely doesn't look that great though.

Also looking at that Valkryie wannabe makes me wish someone would make an actual good Macross flight sim.  Gerwalk modes are just sexy.

At least with this unlike the Yar's Revenge recent remake, this game at least seems fairly close to the original & can be fun. The Yar's Revenge remake just seemed a bit disconnected from the original as far as what was going on & gameplay.

A Quick Look is not a review, it's a quick look.  If the game makes a terrible first impression that is going to come through on a video such as this.  I don't think Jeff should be required to "research" every game he plays before playing it.  Further, if the staff were to research every game before doing a Quick Look we wouldn't see nearly as many.  The whole idea behind these videos is that they don't require much effort from the staff, it allows them to show a game and at least give the community a taste of it without writing an entire review.

Besides, I think people are more than capable of forming their own opinions when seeing a video of the game being played.  Take this for example, Jeff didn't seem to enjoy it much--Ryan seemed to hate it--but I think it looks interesting.

The whole name remake thing just seems like management bullshit. Some old guy who thought it was a good idea and no-one else cared to tell him that he's a waste of space.

I will say I'm tired of them constantly ending QLs with "How much is this?" "Oh, I think it's X amount". Then they precede to play the guessing game. Is it that difficult to confirm the price of a game beforehand?

is it that difficult to spend the 10 seconds it would take to look it up on google?

They've already shot, edited and posted the video.

2 things that really put me of Giant Bomb, and to be fair it's Ryan mostly, is the inevitable inverted hate and the  ubiquitous achievement question. I could go into a moan about why Inverted is for the clever people and why achievements are pointless but I wont as I know people will start shouting at me :D

Another game given short shrift by the increasingly flippant GB team. I have this game, via Steam, and I have to say it's a breath of fresh air after oh-so-many tired FPS's, RPGs, etc, etc. How nice to have a good space combat sim to fool about in - and whilst I can't speak for consoles, the PC version, with everything on max, looks very sweet, indeed. Plus, you can play on PC with a 360 controller. I found it easy to get to grips with and really quite addictive - and the whole thing is so much more polished than I was expecting.

It's sad that GB seems less and less inclined to give a game a decent chance these days. Jeff's puzzling but comprehensive savaging of Brink just recently was already enough to chafe and has given me good cause to question GB's commitment to fair and objective criticism; picking on a small game like this now just seems a tad spiteful.

This is a great little game - anyone who loves space combat sims will get a good amount of entertainment from it. Yes, it's all a bit silly, but it plays well and... well, it's just damn good fun. It's also very cheap - I got mine for £6.99 on Steam. I consider that a bargain for the sheer replayability of it all, alone.

You say anyone who love space combat sims, maybe they just don't love them like you do?

Its their opinion, and it's showing their impressions with the game. As for me, it seems fine but i've played enough of those games to get bored of them now too.

If this game looks interesting to you, I suggest you get Project Sylpheed. It's $10 on amazon.com as of writing this and it's a great space flight game.

Played this for a while last night and I have to agree it is bad. I love the space sim genre, but this very much feels like a throwaway game. I mean, how long ago was Freespace? Can we not have space sims that control in the same ballpark as that? I guess I'll continue to wait for the next game in the X series to bring the genre into the current generation (fingers crossed).
