What bugs me is that this is supposed to be a sci-fi take on something like Terraria, but it's almost the same exact game. Why, in a sci-fi setting, am I chopping down trees and making pickaxes?

It's kinda like the Minecraft mods (Feed the Beast, Tekkit, Galacticraft). You get all this cool advanced shit, and ostensibly you'd think you would want it straight away. Problem is, if you jump straight into all that sweet late-game stuff then you lose the progression somewhat and the game tends to get boring quickly. Whereas climbing the tech tree from the traditional tools and materials, and eventually developing that into more advanced sci-fi tools to collect crazy resources on potential future planets, offers a much more satisfying sense of accomplishment in the long run.

And trees are just a thing of life. If a planet can support life, it'll probably feature something that can be equated to Earth vegetation. That said, it'd be nice if they let you play around a little bit more with upgrading that manipulator or something, rather than going straight back into pickaxes.

I just made a funny face when they said "Artist of terreria." isn't the main character just lifted from Final Fantasy 6, and then given dumb haircuts and armors.

"Fuck the Prime Directive." Yep, figured that would be Jeff's philosophy.

This website works as intended. Without noticing I went to giantbomb.com, pressed play on the Quick Look on the front page, maximized it to full screen, and a few seconds in thought "wait, I'm watching a Quick Look? I don't recall choosing to watch this thing". I've been completely conditioned GB.

My opinion also. Things do seem to be better with the video player and other stuff. I was shocked when I actually could see chat the other day. Been a while. Very good.

I'm so torn about this. I bought Terraria a long time ago for like 2 bucks on Steam and I still haven't played it cuz it seems really time consuming and also seems like the kinda game that requires that you really care in order to enjoy it. Like I can't just pick it up and kinda be into it and enjoy it. I have to be obsessed otherwise it's not worth my time. Because of that feeling, I haven't started Terraria yet.

Now I see this and it looks exactly the same, and by that I mean that it looks like it could be awesome if I were to get obsessed with it. Yet again, I'm still reluctant to poor that much of my time into 1 game. If I were to pick one, I would pick this over Terraria, but this isn't out yet and I already have Terraria.

I'd say the easy answer is to try Terraria and see how I like it, but this is my point. It doesn't seem like a try and see kinda game. It's either dive in, or don't bother. I guess it'll just sit in my Steam library until I happen to come across a whole bunch of extra time in my life and feel like getting obsessed with something new.

Pooh gas.

Get to alien planet. Immediately chop down trees and kill indigenous life.

Considering most of the indigenous life will try to kill you on sight I say they have it coming! XD

@y2ken: Literally all they have to do is call them Cyber-Axes and I'd feel better.

Playing the beta. Really cool game, in the right direction. Imagine being able to travel throughout a randomly generated universe. Land on a planet and collect and mine. Make weapons and armour, and explore... Having fun with this game Starbound!

The main draw is that the game seems to be generated on the fly, very very cool. Like how the guy above described the encampment he and his friends happened upon, stuff like this is what makes this game so much fun and interesting enough to keep coming back for more.

I made and Apex a little monkey man and when he landed he came upon a small base with a robotic monkey on a wheelchair type device. I killed him when he attacked and took over his base. The cool thing is that you can take everything out of the base and everything has a value, so it's like looting.

Lots of potential in this game, and if you like this type of game you'll really want this game. I first found out about this type of game through terraria and i've been hooked ever since. When i heard about Starbound there was no doubt about getting it!

Oh and found out something really cool, beds, if you make a bed you can heal while your character sleeps, that the cool thing about this game, EVERYTHING seems to have a use! Very cool concept here.

I've noticed this and Darkout on Steam yesterday. Neat concept, and wonder why the the sudden splash of sci-fi themed Terraria--also wonder if pointless digging and fortress building can hold out just because its scifi. I need a story.

There once was a space explorer who just came out of stasis for the first time onboard their very own spaceship. It familiarised itself with its environment and discovered a teleporter. Using the teleporter, the space explorer landed on an alien planet. There were dangerous monsters and weird plants, survival was sure to be tough. So the space explorer decided to build a temporary hut to shelter themselves from the wild, but it had to first collect some building materials. On its way to collect some building materials they met another space explorer, this one had also recently been awoken from stasis onboard their very own spaceship. The two exchanged words and the other space explorer said they had met another space explorer, whom they had worked with to set up a camp.

This led to the three space explorers adventuring through space. They called themselves the "astronauts." Together on their journey they faced ever-increasing challenges as they sought to find other explorers and building materials so that they could create civilisation.

I don't know why, but Jeff saying "I didn't grab the torch, I grabbed the bananas" made me laugh pretty hard.

Curious to see a new quick-look of this since so much has changed since when this first came out and it's now officially out of Beta.

I have fading memories of playing this for about 5 hours back in December of 2013. It has come far.
