Quick Look: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

I'm always curious if fans of this will enjoy it anyway.

I know that Deadpool fans have really enjoyed that Deadpool game that came out a while back, even though that wasn't particularly good.

While this game is by no means the greatest game ever made, it isn't as bad as they make it seem either.

Great quick look! Sorry, but I like my toitles in 16-bits at the maximum. This game looks really bad. The art is really creepy and it looks like a Duke Nukem Forever mod.

If I were a cool gang member and four giant turtles attacked me and my crew, I would run away. I would run away, really fast.

Okay so take a close look at the comic book cinematic bit. Pause on a shot that has a couple turtles in the frame. Now imagine their skin is a normal skin colour instead of green. Look at the head and neck area., ,,,

You know, I normally feel that the guys are too harsh on some things. This doesn't seem to be one of those cases.

The only good thing on the game is that menu song. Love the heck of it!

Agreed with Jeff & Brad that the 4 turtle characters in this & the overall look of the motion comics to just be poorly designed & not too appealing. Seems after seeing the quicklook that the gameplay is just below average lacking lots of fun.

From the reviews i've read, this game just isn't finished. There could potentially be something actually pretty good here but as is, it's a mess with bad controls, camera and vast amount of bugs.

Just getting to this QL now so I don't know if somebody corrected it but Red Fly only did the Wii, PS2 & PSP versions of Ghostbusters: The Video Game. Terminal Reality did the PC, 360 & PS3 versions. So please, do not sully the good name of the developer that went on to make Kinect Star Wars and The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct.

Note: I actually liked that Ghostbusters game.

There is a new cartoon and I think you guys would at least get a kick out of the fact that in the show The Kraang are now a Borg-like hivemind all voiced by Nolan North.

I really wanted this game and it turns out that it is this bad. Maybe it looks much better on PC.. Even though the gameplay looks horrid.
Oh well. Have to keep dreaming of another good TMNT game then.

I played the demo and had many of the same problems: The camera is way to close and would get caught on the environment so I would always get hit by a guy. The timing on the counter was really rough; I feel like I had to hit it EXACTLY when the swirly-swirl showed up. I also kept hitting Y because that's the counter in the Arkham games, which is my own fault for playing that game so much.

I was holding off on buying this till the Quick Look to see if some of the later game abilities would make it more fun, but they started at the beginning so all I got to see was the shitty traversal with April and everything that was in the demo.

If memory serves this is part of a two or three game deal with Nickelodeon who currently owns the rights to the lean green fighting machines so maybe the next one will be better. Till them I'll keep looking for my copy on Turtles in Time on the SNES which let's me choose either "animated" or "comic" art style which is still one of my favorite options in a game.

In conclusion! waiting for the next one, Raph's Voice is atrocious, I like the design of the turtles, hate the comic style cutscenes, combat felt unresponsive but could be fun on co-op, running around was god awful, Play Turtles in Time; It's awesome! Any thing I say after "If memory serves" might be wrong because fuck fact checking, and I don't know the appropriate time to use semi-colons or original colons.

I don't normally have this reaction and rarely feel compelled to express myself in this way but goddamn this game looks terrible. Along those lines I think the phrase is often misused but this game straight up looks like a 360 launch game. Everything from the flat subtitles to the over-exaggerated light source glow, the chintzy way the floating items look and dead simple level design. And yet it's 3 years too late to straight up ripping off elements from Batman right down to the takedowns. Either way, if you told me this game came out in like February of 2006, I would believe you.

Man what a weird thing. I bet the devs on this project have some goddamn stories to tell.

The design of the turtles is probably the only thing I like about this, judging from this video alone. They look like gross mutant freaks. Not at all like I remember them from the '90s cartoon, and that's actually kind of interesting. Too bad the game itself looks bad.

The turtles alone are too creepy and ugly for me to play this, but then the game itself is really awful.

This makes me so sad. I was looking forward to a resurgence of this franchise. I wouldn't even attempt to play this game.

There's actually a modern, ongoing comic of this (with Eastman's direct involvement) that is better written, better looking, and I'll say animates better than this...also: bounce.

Jeff spent more time considering his level upgrade than the devs have spent polishing this game.

Games like this bum me out a bit. I'm sure there's well meaning people who work on these things and either through lack of resources and talent or someone yelling "we're shipping next week" that it just pretty much turns all that into a waste of everyone's time.

The game isn't as bad as it's made out to be. It's buggy as fuck and it has some serious camera/control issues, but it's far from awful. It bums me out more than it makes me angry, because underneath all the shit is the core to a great modern TMNT game.

I had an OK time up to the boss a couple hours in. I got to the second form and then the endless waves of enemies ruined it. And the control scheme is baffling. Hitting LT to rotate through items and using LB to use them isn't good. I've wasted a lot of items. I was playing on PC so I didn't have any screen tearing or anything like that. And the combat.. just boring, even after upgrading only Raph ('cause he's the best) with all this extra moves it wasn't that fun. Like a parent will say to their kids, "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed."

The weird thing is, there's no deadline to a movie's release that this game needed to be rushed for other than this summer of arcade thing. I'm sure Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons took a year to make, was announced in Sept 2012 and that's damn polished game of the year material. It took this developer an year to make TMNT: Out of the Shadows?

Great, now make it a good game and add more Street Sharks.

I got instantly motion sick from the start, I could only watch it for a few minutes before I had to stop.

And I was actually interested in this game at one point. There goes that.

I liked how they managed to use the same shot of April in it three times, only slightly differently framed the last time. Even with motion comics, there's apparently still money to be saved.

On a positive note, I really liked the ambient lightning and skybox, the red and blue glow on buildings in the distance and that stuff. The real-time shadows looked pretty bad though, especially when the light source was moving and the environment had no or static shadows, looked like only the characters cast dynamic shadows.
