Quick Look: Toejam & Earl

Wait people like this awful looking side scroller more than the first one? Wow I feel bad for you people.

I've never actually played the first one, not even emulated. It's pretty neat.

Still like Panic on Funkotron more, but that's mostly nostalgia.

Why all the hate for TJ&E 2? Maybe it's because I never played the first one, but I thoroughly enjoyed 2 with a buddy. Throwing jars is too slow, jump up and rain them down from above!

I played this as a kid and had no idea about anything. That's why I actually preferred 2 back then because I could decipher the damn thing.

@drewbert audio syncing is really messed up in this toe jam and earl video, in the html5 version.

The first two Toejam & Earl games were both really great.

Fantastic quick look gentlemen. I'm instantly reminded that Toe Jam and Earl is one of the greatest video games ever. I might buy this collection just to play that game again. This video is my first time seeing the sequel and I'm not too impressed. I think the art looks pretty cool in part 2 but I could only describe that uninspired platforming game design as 'bogus'. Keep doing these great videos!

That was really annoying me with a lot of their videos a couple of months ago so I started using the YouTube stream. Seems to work a lot better. I didn't notice the audio being out of sync on this video. Perhaps try the YouTube option.

What's with all the Panic on Funkatron hate?

I never owned a Genesis, so I have no attachment to Toejam & Earl games, and I have no burning desire to play them at this point. That said, Toejam & Earl 2 looks more entertaining to me than the first game. I guess that's because the sequel has better art and seems to have a faster pace. At the very least, I don't see what it is about the sequel that disgusts Jeff and Drew so much.

On another note, the music and sound effects in that Vintage Collection menu is wonderful. Sega in general makes very distinct, charming audio -- lots of bright chords and smooth beeping tones -- that to me is quintessentially "video game."

I liked Toejam & Earl 2. But that was entirely based on its art and animations.

Ah, these games. I remember the first time my friend brought over Toejam&Earl to play. Countless hours.

As someone who has no history with the Toejam and Earl franchise at all, both of these games seem like utter pieces of shit. The slowest platformer ever on the one hand, and a equally slow, tedious collect-a-thon on the other.

This is bringing back so many ridiculous and vivid memories that I literally cannot comprehend it.

I'm not going to lie - this game looks boring as hell. Given how much people like it, I must be missing something.

This is basically the best week for GB videos ever.

@PlasmaUK: I don't know TJ&E 1 is the best for sure, but I guess cuz I played 2 first I like it better than the GB guys.

You can buy the two games separately on PS3. Probably the way to go.

Oh man, I could watch Jeff and Drew play TJ & E all day.

Surprised that not only does this game completely rips of the ET game on the atari 2600 with the gameplay but they nailed it with making a fun game. Screw you ET, Toe Jam & Earl are much better aliens to hang around with.

I played a fair amount of Panic on Funkotron as a kid, and it always seemed perfectly fine. It's a decent platformer with a really weird tone and great art.

The 90s were weird.

My best friend and I used to play this together in high school. A LOT. We were sure the game was impossible, but when we came back to it many years later as adults, we finished it quite easily.

The enemy design gets pretty insane by the second half, so anyone claiming it looks "boring" probably just needs to jump in and try it. You don't know fear until you're being chased by the Phantom Ice Cream Truck. All you hear is the HONK HONK and then you're flattened.

This Quicklook needs to be about an hour longer.

I've heard Jeff talk this game up for years but I have never seen it being played or know what it's actually about. Lay it down for me, Big Jeffrey.

Fuck the haters. Panic On Funkatron is the superior TJ&E game. The first one is just boring. I rented it as a kid and fell asleep playing it.
