Yeah, I think the RPG comparisons are apt. The pace seems a lot slower than say, Grand Theft Auto. If you're not expecting that, yeah it can be a bit off-putting.

Well it depends on what you mean by necessary. Yakuza 3 plays a lot on established bonds with previous characters for its drama and its "shocking" moments. The context is explained, but it's not felt. Yakuza 3's story on the whole is pretty weak compared to standards set by 1 and 2 aswell. 2 especially.

You'll be able to follow it fine, but there is a currency in *having experienced* where these characters come from.

You could say that Yakuza 1 is a lot about establishing who Kiryu is. It's a wholly personal story where they really ground that character and give that slight notion of sadness in his eyes some context and gravity.

2 is much more of a crime epic. It's kinda The Dark Knight of the series so far in that it puts its *hero* somewhat in the background to explore the ambitions of other characters and weave this really complex narrative. 3 feels thematically more similar to 1, because it explores who Kiryu is now and where his values lie.

The reason I insist that people play the first two is simply that you get that relationship with the characters that a condensed "previously on" can't establish, and also because feeding off 1, Yakuza 2 is probably one of the strongest video game stories out there.

If you have a system that can play imports, 1 and 2 both are readily available here in europe for crumbs so I would suggest importing them in that case.

I'm enjoying this game but the pace definitely is a little odd at times. Lmao @ Jeff, "Ehh..free worm!" haha.

i want this game... but SEGA crippled it so bad by taking stuff out i just cant buy it.

SEGA if you read any comments know that you lost sales because you messed up, not because the game is unpopular. (I heard you cannot even get enough $ and XP now because they took games out that were prime for that - and didn't rebalance the game). You broke the game SEGA, nice!

I enjoyed this QL much more than I would have thought because of things like the "Who stole my $10" quest.  This has moved up higher on my "buy" list.

Man, without the Giant Bomb dudes joking around over the boring, uninteresting dialogue and gameplay, this seems like it would be awful. That said, some part of me wants to play this... Why?! It kind of reminds me of Shenmue, and I have a strong dislike for Shenmue. I don't even...

I thought Yakuza was a semi-sandbox gallery brawler, so this was a surprise to me.
I like how the game takes its sweet time to set the story and the emotions of the characters.
The money mystery was a nice touch!
I'll have to give this game a go.

Thanks so much for these quick looks.  For me it's the best way to see what a game is like aside from actually playing it.  Thanks again.

Watching this quick-look is boring, but if you play it and pay attention to the story it's not that boring anymore.

yeah. also, to be fair, this is the most low key section in the entire game. there is plenty of combat and excitement just before and after what they are showing

The only thing i don't like about this game is the amount of useless text. You have to read through so much crap just to find out what you need to do next. Dont get me wrong, a lot of the dialog is great stuff. Its some times funny and other times very dramatic that helps put everything your doing in to a better context or atmosphere, but for every good bit of dialog there is, there's twice as much worthless dialog.

Its funny, there is a lot of payoff in Yakuza 6 for all the buildup of your relationship with the kids in this game.
