I think this is the eightieth time Jeff's tried to explain what review scores are supposed to mean, and methinks he doth protest too much. If so many people think review scores are important, if you have to explain the true definition to them over and over again, the problem probably isn't them. Consensus is king, bro.

Also you're pandering to people who are willing to spend sixty dollars on a product based on solely on a star rating. These are people who shouldn't be allowed to handle money in the first place. Just don't have star ratings at all.

The problem is exactly them, but people aren't going to get smarter so this problem will continue into infinity. It doesn't mean that we should use arbitrary and meaningless systems to pander to idiots. Your view is to have no actual score at all, though, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Yeah, these videos really are among the very best GB content in their own way. Very interesting stuff and the less focussed talk didn't change the quality at all.

Honestly I never really thought that PS3 or Xbox would announce a new console within the next year or so and personally I'd rather they didn't. Sure Nintendo is releasing the Wii U but it doesn't seem to be any more technical then what's out now unless I've missed anything? Other than having a screen on a controller which, by the way, what would be the battery life on the controller?

I'm starting to enjoy these videos. I don't agree with a lot of what Jeff has to say but I like how opinionated he is and how confidently he just lays down the law as he sees it! Quite entertaining.

Man that got really depressing near the end there. I do think we need a resurgence in video games though, like CoD4 did. A new gen could do this well, something tells me that a lot of publishers are holding off the green light on new IP's. Telling the dev to go make another sequel and to come back with their new IP when the new consoles are on the way.

You know what I've changed my mind, I want new consoles for 2012. Am I going to buy any of them? No. Are the games going to be good? Probably not. The only good thing is that the faster they come out the faster developers and publishers get their footing on the new tech. I'll be fine with my PS3 until 2014 and by than I hope major hardware problems will be addressed, prices will drop and games will get better for these newer machines.

I think Hall of Fame should be shot in the studio. I know it may be more work but talking about one specific game into a webcam doesn't seem all that interesting.

I don't understand why Jeff is so down on games this year. Maybe its because he judges gaming in terms of the quality of the big name shooters? Or maybe he's just getting old?!

Personally, I think just Skyrim alone makes this a good year for gaming. Not to mention the other quality stuff like Batman, Uncharted, Saint's Row.

THANK YOU, Jeff. You perfectly expressed how I feel about DLC and the idiots that won't stop whining about it.

I don't know how old you are and what your history is but those people who are "whining" about DLC are probably people who still know what an expansion is. DLC is good and fine if done right, I bought a bunch for different games myself, but there is something to be said for good, old school expansion packs.

And I really really really hate it if people call everyone that has an opinion about some topic whiners if that opinion is even slightly negative.

Those "good, old school expansion packs" don't exist anymore. Embrace DLC because it's not going anywhere.

Heart of the Swarm, baby. Actually, come to think of it, Blizzard is probably the only company who still does Expansion Packs in the traditional sense.

Always so happy when these crop up. I hope you're happier or less tired next time Jeff; it's a bit of a bummer to see you so down. The ending was perfect. Maybe review scores should be replaced with food analogies?

Couldn't agree more with Jeff about the third party controllers, not a damn one I've bought has been worth the asking price though I did get some decent use out of a crappy 360 pc gamepad knockoff few years back.

Me too. I love all of the Game of the Year stuff. Plus, it's a great way to sum up the year in gaming and gives the crew a chance to talk up games they enjoyed even if some of them are quickly cut from the list.

I would love to see Bethesda put out a "Elder Scrolls Legacy" pack or something, with all of the ES games remade in the Skyrim style. It would be a massive undertaking though, I imagine. Everything but a portion of the writing would be all new assets in the case of Daggerfall.

Yay! :D

On the topic of stagnant game design, I'm less concerned about it than I would be if this generation existed without the downloadable scene. It is sad how samey sequel driven the big budget titles have gotten. It does bother me. A big problem is that games have gotten so big now, the stakes are so high, no one wants to back an unproven idea with serious funding. I don't think it's a bad thing if the top end of the AAA market falls apart a little bit as a result of market saturation of derivative titles. There's a bright future in downloadable, medium budget titles. Smaller risk, lower overhead, potential to sell huge anyway with plenty of freedom for designers to come in and put together games they really care about making.

My only issue with DLC has been the price sometimes. I find it hard to justify paying 10 dollars for a 1-2 hour additional portion when the the 40-60-100 hour game cost 60 dollars. I always do the proportions in my head and it feels like I got ripped off. The 75 minute Arrival DLC was a perfect example of this for me.

Oh man, I'm in love with Jeff right now for his talk on DLC.  It's what I've been saying for a year now.  It's all about value.  If there's no value, don't buy it.  Mad respect to Jeff, I feel like I've been taking crazy pills and no one other than me gets it.

Made the mistake of buying the Tron Legacy PS3 controller...looks cool but it feels nothing like the PS3 controller and it effects the game play badly. That and but buttons stick for a fraction of a second.

Disappointed Jeff doesn't like this year's games as a whole. Skyrim and Arkham City are two of the best games I've ever played, and I though Dead Island was an awesome surprise. And Portal 2 was awesome.

I would not be surprised if the next Xbox came out in late 2012 which ever console has a head start will most likely lead the console race and Microsoft knows this they're not trying to go head up with Sony because they have the stronger first party support even with Halo 4 coming out on the 360 it would be in Microsoft's best interest to be the first out the gate and really put Sony on it's heals

In the case of Daggerfall it would be damn near impossible. That game covered all of Tamriel, that thing would be on like 4 blurays.

There is something very religious about watching these videos.

It's like we (members of the Church of Games) gather around our High Priest every few weeks to hear him espouse the particular dogma that gathers us all together in the first place. It's very sweet.

Maybe I'm reading a little too much into it.

I love this series. It reminds me of Adam Sessler's Soapbox videos that he does, and I absolutely love those. It's nice to hear the inner-workings of the game industry and it's relationship to the media.
