The compendium microtransactions are so gross. I'm surprised Jeff didn't call Brad out on it after the big deal they made of the XBone microtransactions.

I am pretty bummed that I will no longer hear Vinny on the bombcast nor will he be replacement host for Jeff when he is out. This super, super, super bums me out. I am glad we'll potentially get new stuff and he's not leaving Giant Bomb, but it stinks. Oh well, maybe this will just mean a new podcast for me to listen to.

Yeah, I genuinely wish everybody all the best going forward but -and I promise this isn't meant as an insult to the rest of the crew- UPF and Bombcasts minus Vinny sound far less appealing to me. He's also pretty much the only person who drops fatherhood anecdotes without boring the shit out of me. Really hope things work out at GBNY.

Also while we're calling out tired-ass memes, I'd like to add "thanks, Obama" to the pile. Shit stopped being funny a while ago.

Please move gb to New York. I still hate that Patrick isn't on the bomb cast, but if vinny isn't on, then really who but, possibly Danny can be so charismatic to carry the cast through all those incredibly stupid antidote I loved so much. They are really going to have to reconsider streaming vinny in.

What's wrong with Dota 2's business model? The entire game is free, the only thing you can put money into is cosmetic items with no gameplay impact. Dota 2 / TF2 usually get pointed to as pretty much the least offensive/onerous way to do free to play, so I'm curious what your take on it is.

Long term i think its great that Vinny is opening GBNY. If they want giantbomb to last, they gotta expand, and if someone can be in charge of a new base, its totally Vinny. But maaaaaaaaaaaan, im gonna miss him with the other dudes :(

Broadly speaking, I agree with you 100%. If you're talking about FTP business models, Dota 2 and TF2 do it well. If what you buy is purely cosmetic, it negates the "pay-to-win" argument that can be leveled against so many other payment structures.

My feelings on Valve are hard to qualify. Steam has done a lot of good for both consumers and developers. I have about 200 games in my Steam library, and as far as I'm concerned it's THE storefront from which to buy games on PC.

That said, there's something odd-feeling about "earning" a Steam trading card by playing a game, putting this digital cipher of a thing on the "marketplace" and having it sell immediately for 20 cents (of which Valve takes a cut.)

Every time a "rare" item (whose rarity is governed by Valve) is sold for stupid sums of money, Valve takes a cut. Often those items are then re-sold to other players for higher amounts.

They've become insanely good at creating systems and monetising them in ways that don't really put up a barrier between you and your games. Something about that feels super insidious to me. I can't adequately express why that is, and that bothers me even more.

Ugh, how did they ruin the pacing of Tony Hawk so badly? Even that deliberately bad Star Wars game looked more exciting to play.

What BS business model? It's one of very few games that are literally free to play. Absolutely everything you can pay for is cosmetic and optional.
