" Well, does anyone have any answers? Also, do you think starcraft 2 will be as popular as the original or will Koreans hesitate to make the switch? I could see alot of pro Korean gamers losing their number 1 spot because of the new units and game mechanics. "It's popular in Korea because some Korean conglomerate marketed the hell out of their broadcasting, enough to gain a widespread audience. If they do the same for SC2, it will be as popular.
And the sky is blue because of atmospheric scattering.
One of the UC Berkeley lectures gives a good summary of it, think it's the first one. Basically SKTelecom forked out a bunch of cash, and I think the government also put some money into getting internet accessibility more wide-spread right around the time of starcraft's launch, which allowed their online to get huge quickly. Could just be making that up, though, haven't watched the videos in a while.
Few obvious things.
1. Low system requirments. It'll play on bloody anything you put it on these days. Means its easy for people to set up LAN Cafes for it and for most people to play it.
2. Koreans love competition and Starcraft has been very well balanced and is more pure in a competitive sense than other modern games.
3. Local support, also a result of sys reqs.
Thats all I can think of.
I have seen this question as sort of a rule of nature by now. I don't even question it. I live in a very heavily South Korean influenced area in New Jersey, and I know that that is the game of choice. I think its simple requirements and addictive gameplay give it legs, and it just caught on over there. A lot of computer cafes support it here and there, and it is not their biggest game, practically.
It's like why Halo is so popular in the U.S, it's just one of those things. It's a very deep, almost near perfect strategy game, that was created and to this day still stands up as a balanced and fun RTS experience. I am surprised it's not played more here in the U.S.
" Why is the sky blue ? "Because our eyes see it that way.
Same goes for SC and Korea.
As far as the switch to SC2 goes, it all depends on the game. They're probably plenty ready to move since they've played sc1 so much, but if the game isn't perfect right out of the box, they likely won't ever switch.
Top players will likely stay top players as long as they transition cleanly and keep up their practice. 9 hours a day gets you used to new mechanics fairly quickly. If their ridiculous APM is put to waste because of easier micro/macro, though, they may just stick with sc1.
" @fang273: Well, for a game to be perfect right out of the box seems a little unrealistic. Blizzard released an update for Diablo 2 and some other game pretty recently, so patches are inevitable. Also, I think that some of these Koreans are so use to the same thing that they'll try StarCraft 2 and then go back to one, then because these Korean players have such a strong fanbase that there may even be a possible split in these Korean leagues where they'll play StarCraft 1 and 2, never fully getting rid of the original. Also this is just one possibility, I could be completely wrong and StarCraft 2 ends up being bigger than sliced bread. "That is exactly the reason that Blizzard has had close contact with top Korean players while balancing the multiplayer of SC2. So that doesnt happen.

Why did Judas, rat to Romans while Jesus slept?

So far there have been some interviews with Korean progamers from Fomos and their reactions to SC2 has positive so far. But honestly we won't know until SC2 has been out for a year or two, and the balance and general difficulty of the game has been worked out.
I would really doubt that the top Korean players wont be the best players in the world if SC2 has the same kind of following. The infrastructure in Korea alone gives them a huge advantage. They have entire practice houses full with teams regularly playing 9+ hours a day, 4 major leagues/tourneys already in place, a regulatory body. It's ridiculous.

"Yeah I could see the release going the same way Counter Strike and Counter Strike Source went.
" Why is the sky blue ? "It's not.
The Machine would have you believe it is though.

"Usually there is more than one reason for success. Starcraft being shown in 640 x 480p makes it easy to instantly identify units and what's going on the screen, it is a perfect game for spectators. The viewers watch the action while the commentators talk about strategy. It's still possible to follow the action even on a grainy www.gomtv.net video stream. Starcraft is a spectator sport first. In contrast SC 2v2 matches completely disappeared from organised events, because they were harder to follow.
Starcraft 2 most likely won't become nearly as popular to spectate, because units are smaller and all look similar, with annoying glitter and particle effects popping off everywhere. But it might get more regular participants rather than viewers, if the skill based matchmaking with permanent accounts on B.net works.
Why did Persona 4 become so popular on GiantBomb? - 1. It's a great game, 2. It's broadcasted and 3. It's great to watch & follow.
They're all training for the day when Jong-il starts some mess.
My guess: It was really cheap to Spawn installs on all the PCs in your LAN. It had low requirements. It was good. Then it gets popular and the snow ball just rolls.
Probably the same reason Blizzard is not doing LAN this time.
The sky is blue because:
Wikipedia said:
Water is wet because:Light from the sky is a result of the scattering of sunlight, which results in a blue color perceived by the human eye. On a sunny day Rayleigh Scattering gives the sky a blue gradient — dark in the zenith, light near the horizon. Light that comes in from overhead encounters 1/38th of the air mass that light coming along a horizon path encounters. So, fewer particles scatter the zenith sunbeam, and therefore the light remains a darker blue.
The sky can turn a multitude of colors such as red, orange and yellow (especially near sunset or sunrise) and black at night. Scattering effects also partially polarize light from the sky.

The question of why is water wet cannot be answered with regular science methodology, but can be answered in Zen Physics. Water is wet because this is the nature of water. The nature of rock is to be hard. The nature of grass is to be green. The nature of water is to be wet. To take away from its true nature is to destroy what is and thus water is not water anymore. It may be ice, but it surely is not water. Water begets wetness. Wetness begets slipperiness. Slipperiness begets falling. Falling begets a long and painful hospital stay.
Well, one of my friends is Korean, and word on the street is they're actually not too excited about SCII, SCI, is kinda like a tradition, and very very importantly, SCII DOESN'T have LAN! Imagine a sequel to thanksgiving.. now Imagine a sequel to thanksgiving with no fucking turkey.
Also new units and stuff 'll fuck up their strategy. Basically they're mostly unhappy about it, and would probably stick to the first, or at least a visible majority will. Most likely on the pro level. I mean the average player of course will, but I dunno. Doesn't seem as hyped there as it is stateside.
" Why is the sky blue ? "Do we really have to go through this ordeal again?
Short Answer:
It's because the air molecules in out atmosphere scatter the the blue light.
Long Answer:
When the light from the sun hits our planet our atmosphere scatters it. Colors with short wavelength, like the violet and blue, scatter more then the others. Because of that our sky appear violet/blue but since the receptors in our eyes are more sensitive to blue light then they are to violet light, our brains interprets that as blue sky.
