Steam Holiday Sale 2014 - Master Thread
Zeno Clash 1 & 2 are going for real cheap too. I randomly searched for them and got them at great price. I also bought NaissanceE and Banished.
I bought enough that I'm almost at level 6 of the sale badge kind of without trying. Every damn time, Valve! At least I broke 2000 before the sale started so I didn't have to worry about watching my count.
Jesus. I think you can get about 13 cards if you voted every day, but other than that, getting a set of 8 cards requires $80 USD.
I only leveled up that badge twice, then sold the rest of the cards, managing to get a few one dollar games for free.
Probably the fewest games I've purchased in a winter sale. I only purchased two: Shovel Knight and Banished. I'm really enjoying both games.
, getting a set of 8 cards requires $80 USD.
Which cards? Foil cards? The regular ones are really dirt cheap....

Even foil cards go for 40-50 cent, I think? I had one of those and I don't think I sold it for more than $0.50.

@fisk0: Ah, I understand, he means you need to buy 80 dollars worth of games to get 8 cards (8x10$).
But this year you get cards for everything: voting, buying and making badges.
It is why the cards are so much cheaper this time around
For the last 2 or 3 major sales, you've been able to get cards for voting, buying, and making badges. People shouldn't even bother making badges when it's not a sale, since instead of getting another card, all you get is a coupon for literally just some random game on Steam you probably don't want.
Anyway, the guy said "I bought enough that I'm almost at level 6 of the sale badge kind of without trying", which sounds like he wasn't sitting there crafting badges or buying cards off the marketplace, because I'd consider those to be "trying". It sounds like through some combination of voting and buying stuff, he ended up with like 48 holiday cards.
Still no Dark Souls 2 DLC sale. I guess it's not going to go on sale. It looks like they started the blow out today so I suspect the prices from today until ending won't change anymore.
I suspect you are right, I'll just wait for Sins of the Scholar and get it that way
@bisonhero: Right, gotcha.
I remember that voting and buying got you cards in previous sales, I just didn't remember that making badges got you more cards.
I also don't really get the point of leveling up a badge 6 times, you don't get any cumulative xp bonus on top of it...
@artisanbreads: Yes, DS2 is pointless in light that it is getting re-released soon. Regarding the others, just don't do it, you (probably) have too much stuff in your lib already.

Each level of a badge generally gets you 100 XP, I think? So a level 5 badge (the usual limit) gets you 500 XP (cumulatively). I assumed the sale badges just keep going, so a level 6 badge would have given you 600 XP, and so on. So for the few hundred people on Steam that really give a shit and have a Steam level in the 100-400 range, the sale badges are a great way to just pour money into leveling up their account. This guy has a level 6,666 2014 Holiday badge:

I did craft a few badges and I think I made about 3 or 4 trades, including where I sold a card on the market to buy another. Maybe 4/6 levels were without those things. Still, I spent way too much on the sale to say the exact amount here. I've said it before: Steam has taught me what it means to have an embarrassment of something.

Oh well, I spent a lot on this sale as well. A large part of it was Cakewalk Sonar Studio Edition which was about a hundred bucks (discounted from 180€), but even then, that was only about a sixth of the total amount I spent.
WTF
My issue is why level up this badge 6 (or 6,666) times vs. leveling up something else or even just selling the spare cards. You don't get a bonus here for doing it 6 times vs. crafting 6 different badges.
During the sale I have gotten:
- Euro Truck Simulator 2 Christmas Bundle (steam store) - Not yet installed
- L.A. Noire Complete (Nuuvem) - Not yet installed
- Just Cause 1 + 2 + DLC (steam store) - Not yet installed
- The Walking Dead + 400 days (Green Man Gaming) - Campaign Completed + DLC should be completed today
- Victim of Xen (free from Green Man Gaming) - Not yet installed
- Pixel Junk Monsters Ultimate (free from Green Man Gaming) - Not yet installed
- Bad Rats (steam store) - Installed, idled and trading card drops sold [Will not touch again]
- Super Meat Boy (steam store) - Not yet installed
- Among the Sleep (steam store) - Will install soon
- Penguin's Arena (free from Bundle Stars) - Not yet installed

- Rogue Legacy (steam store) - Will install soon
- Racer 8 (free from Indiegala) - Installed, idled and trading card drops sold [Will not touch again]
- A bird story (steam store) - Campaign Completed
- Memories of a Vegabond (free from Indiegala) - Not yet installed
- Darksiders 2 + Season Pass (Gifted to a friend on steam)
I am still looking to buy The Fall during the sale but that seems about it for me. This totals to about 50-55 USD, which is down from the $73 USD I spent during last years sale, though I have been buying games and bundles every now and then throughout the year. I also plan on buying the physical copy of South Park stick of truth from my local game store ($18 AUD - cheaper than steam).
Happy Gaming
So I just built a PC about a month ago, which means a lot of games I need to play... so here's the list I've bought so far on the steam sale! Perfect timing!

I imagine I actually spent somewhere in the ballpark of $100-130
@bisonhero: For the people with the highest Steam levels, the special event badges with no level cap are the only way they can keep ranking up.
Still no Dark Souls 2 DLC sale. I guess it's not going to go on sale. It looks like they started the blow out today so I suspect the prices from today until ending won't change anymore.
By the time it goes on sale ill have played Bloodborne and forget Dark Soul's 2 ever existed.
@artisanbreads: Yes, DS2 is pointless in light that it is getting re-released soon. Regarding the others, just don't do it, you (probably) have too much stuff in your lib already.
Yeah I have that thought on DS2.
And you're right on the latter! Think I'm gonna stay strong. Bought enough and I'm only 30 hours into Dragon Age Inquisition and I bought New Vegas and Wasteland 2 to play. Plus other smaller indies and Far Cry 4.
The amount of temptation I have to buy Hatoful Boyfriend is really disturbing me. I've only got a few dollars left so my choices are limited... but should I really go through with this?

OK... I was just watching Angry Joe's latest video (top 10 list). How come no one told me Banner Saga was made by a trio of ex-bioware staff?! I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT!! D;
For what it's worth, being ex-Bioware was a SUPER big part of the Kickstarter pitch, and I guess they assumed it wasn't worth stressing as heavily when the game proper got released because maybe the gaming masses don't really pay attention to developer names?
Here is what I ended up with over the course of the sale. Total...$100.39.

- This War of Mine
- One finger death punch
- Shovel Knight (:D)
- Valiant Hearts
- Jet set Radio
- Luftrausers
- Broforce
- Teslagrad
Good year. I got a few good titles and didn't break the bank.
The sale started off slow, but picked up steam for me later on. Spent less than $70 overall and the most expensive purchase was a baseball spreadsheet simulator.
- Castle Crashers
- Some Borderlands 2 stuff
- Spelunky
- Contrast
- Luftrausers
- Lethal League
- Spec Ops: The Line
- RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 & 2
- Roundabout
- Dustforce
- Out of the Ballpark 15
- Don't Starve Together (gifted to me)
Overall, pretty solid second half. Spelunky is cool, but incredibly difficult. Played Contrast at PAX East and seemed neat. Luftrausers is a cool soundtrack. Really liked what I've played of Lethal League so far. Already know about roller coasters and spent hundreds of hours on those games way back when. Played Roundabout at PAX East, seems stupid. Dustforce takes some getting used to. I've dug deep into other OOTP games in the past so I expect lots of stats. Don't Starve Together isn't quite my thing, but I'm willing to give it a try. The rest I haven't tried yet.
And I hope you all bought Jazzpunk during this sale. Play that hilarity!
