Hm interesting to go back and see, the list of 'complimentary' stuff I bought:

    Enemy Territory: QUAKE WarsComplimentary
    The Orange BoxComplimentary
    QuakeCon 2007Complimentary
    Darwinia / UplinkComplimentary
    Dark MessiahComplimentary
    Garry's ModComplimentary
    DefconComplimentary
    Valve Test Sub 74Complimentary
    X3: ReunionComplimentary
    Half-Life 2: Episode OneComplimentary
    Sin Episode 1Complimentary
    Red OrchestraComplimentary
    Rag Doll Kung FuComplimentary
    Half-Life 2 SilverComplimentary
    Half-Life Platinum PackComplimentary

After that steam history proper kicks in and it understands that I paid money for things. For those curious I believe Valve Test Sub 74 is Portal: First Slice. Another small intersting thing, I was using steam before HL2 came out for the old counter-strike beta that steam launched, kinda sad to see that that old info is not recorded anywhere.

Also oh god I forgot my first steam game after HL2 was Rag Doll King Fu lol

Half-Life 2 was my first, then I avoided Steam entirely until Fear 2. *Shudders* I remember being pissed off at that game. Where I live it wasn't labelled clearly that the boxed copy needed an internet connection. The game sat unplayed, on a shelf for almost a year before I moved somewhere with internet. I still hate that boxed PC games need an internet connection.

I recall during one Christmas around 2008/9[?], I just heard of Steam and installed it on my laptop and installed the Valve Complete Pack 2008, Civ 4 Complete Pack, and Super ID Software Pack, all in order.

A total cost of about $143 dollars.

Never in my life I would comprehend the fact that I now bought almost 40 games in one day at that moment in time.

I think I signed up to buy the valve complete pack circa 2009ish. So, everything pre L4D2/Portal 2. It was like $100US at the time, I think, though I assumed it was being translated into NZD so I was pretty disappointed when I got charged $200NZ~. That was kinda reckless and dumb.

The earliest transaction records I have are for Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition and Plants vs Zombies back in 2009, along with The Orange Box.

That's easy. The Orange Box. Friend bought it as a gift and when I went to install I signed in the steam. I guess that would sort of do it. But first real purchase... Time, Gentlemen Please!

Always fun searching these and trying to find if I've posted in 'em before.

THQ Pack is still probably the best deal I've gotten, even all this time later.

Well, I guess Half-Life 2 is technically the first game I bought for Steam, except I didn't really buy it on Steam, and I didn't use Steam for years afterwards. The first game I bought through Steam seems to be Super Meat Boy.

Half-Life 2. I even had it preloaded before release, which seemed like some real witchcraft at the time.

Left 4 Dead is the oldest purchase in my library from May 2009, but I want to say I got that through a promotion or a gift. I was gifted Plants vs Zombies that Christmas too. It's hard to say for sure, but I think APB might have been the first game I bought for myself on Steam. That was a very anticipated release for me, so I can see it as an ice breaker purchase. It might have even been the reason I got my first Credit Card.

I bought CS at fred meyers and bought condition zero i think right after on steam.. I think I went over a year before I bought anything else and New Vegas was at least 2 years into me having steam before I really added to my library.. I now own 421... Graduating high school and having full time jobs really makes a difference in my buying habits :-/

I'm pretty sure it was Plants vs. Zombies. I remember signing up for Steam on a cheapo laptop while Valve had that free Portal deal going.

Seems pretty common but my first activated game was HL2 and first purchased was L4D2. Crazy how long of a gap there was. For scale, the next was Skyrim. I genuinely had a double take when I saw that. I guess it's easy to forget how relatively "recently" Steam became a phenomenon.
