The SVD (Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova, Dragunov Sniper Rifle) is a sniper/designated marksman's rifle designed in the former Soviet Union by Evgeny Dragunov. It fires 7.62x54mm rimmed cartridges, and commonly features a PSO-1 scope, advanced at the time the weapon was designed.
The weapon is typically featured in games with Soviet or Middle Eastern themes, as the rifle is a common support weapon throughout the former Warsaw Pact countries and had been licensed by Iraq and China for production. The weapon also commonly appears as a sniper rifle for more ragtag guerrila or rebel forces, as like the AK-47 the spread of Soviet weapons through the black market was common after the end of the Cold War and fall of the Soviet Union.
