    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Game » consists of 30 releases. Released Nov 11, 2011

The fifth installment in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls franchise is set in the eponymous province of Skyrim, where the ancient threat of dragons, led by the sinister Alduin, is rising again to threaten all mortal races. Only the player, as the prophesied hero the Dovahkiin, can save the world from destruction.

Looks like 1.2 for PC turns the game into a $60 screen saver....

Sigh... I just got home from work and let the patch install and now the dam game won't even load. The very first time I started it crashed to desktop the instant it got past the splash screen, happened before so I wasn't too worried, but then every time after that it just hangs with that stupid dragon symbol and the smoke rolling in but that's it. The game is now a $60 screen saver.

Was wondering if anyone knew of a way to revert my game to an older version of the release or to bypass whatever they did to make this happen? Or is this some ass backwards new game design choice of theirs that we will need to wait for the mod community to fix?

I feel there is some kind of grand irony in releasing a patch that totally fucks up the game, and i choose to believe that Bethesda saw this, and wanted to share it with the world. its not Bethesda screwing up, its Bethesda being artistic. and showing every one how reliant and trusting they are with technology.

This is messed up. I am at exactly 100 hours time played. Patch launches while I am playing, crashes the game. Now it won't even start up. Just get "failed to initialze the renderer". How the fuck can you screw up something that was COMPLETELY stable (for me) for 100 hours and now this shit?

Except for the part where the games they make are totally awesome, once they get working. I'd rather buy a busted up Bethesda game (ie, Skyrim) than a COD.

@Atramentous: Seriously. As with every other update to a Bethesda game (or any other game with mod/addon support), if something's wrong, step one: disable mods.

I had the same issue. Immediately went in and started disabling mods and trying it again. Sure enough it was one of the mods causing trouble (Val's Crafting Meltdown Alpha for me).

    Launches fine without that.

I just saw this thread, booted up Skyrim and played happily for half an hour until I found a big nasty blood dragon. Upon spending a few minutes fighting it, I finally kill it only the instant I kill it the game disappears instantly, no freezing or any other indication of it failing. Suddenly I'm back in this thread with something to write about...

I can't tell if this is a patch thing or just a Skyrim thing, I've had it happen before.

Maybe they should have taken a different marketing approach and simply labeled it as a public beta, with a mandatory $60 deposit toward the final finished game, which is "unlocked" by the final patch.

I made a thread about this too (with no responses sadface) and disabling my mods did the trick. I don't know which one it was, but I killed all four of them and haven't felt inclined to investigate.

Ya I went in and did the same again. Guess I missed something the first time around. Now it's just the usual constantly random crashes to desktop, total lock ups, characters glitching, missions not completing properly, and random textures not loading to deal with again.

I was pissed that I wasn't able to catch Steam in time from updating it. I took a chance though and tried it and haven't experienced any crazy issues just yet. I'm going to test the no magical resistance bug before continuing any further.

I've been so insanely lucky, nearly 200 hours playtime and I've crashed to desktop once and never had the game freeze. Feels good.

Been playing since 1.2 and had no issues at all either.

Aha, just read the guy above me's post. Hilarious.

I disabled Crafting Meltdown Alpha mod and it fixed this problem for me.  All my other mods seem to work O.K.

Resists are all 0 though.  So not fun, almost completely broken for my character.

The real lesson here is don't buy games made for consoles and then ported to PC. Bethesda is just the latest company to drop PC in favor of consoles. More money for them.

I know that there are plenty of devs who know how to patch and make a PC game that works (Valve, Blizzard...) but this along with launch problems for Rage and Dead Island as well as a delayed Arkham City, PC gamers have sort of been getting the short end of the stick these past few months

I have it for 360 so I'm good. It just must suck for the PC elitists because Valve is about all they have left and Bethesda going consoles does irritate me slightly because I liked playing their games on PC, Bioware's too.

I can't tell if this is a patch thing or just a Skyrim thing, I've had it happen before.

I've had crashes like that since release. Are you using the 4GB launcher?

I don't know what the 4GB launcher is, Its on steam if that makes a difference.

I have 2 folders of skyrim, one backup of fresh install, other is normal with mods. I will not download a patch unless it's as good as the mods I've been downloading. Some aren't even that complex, but they work!
