Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Action RPG (Action Role-Playing Game), also known as ARPG, refers to RPGs (role-playing games) that use direct, real-time, reflex-oriented, action combat systems, instead of the more abstract turn-based or menu-based battle systems.
Alternate realities are worlds that exists next to, in parallel of, or in place of our own.
An often used plot device where the main character wakes up and has lost all their memories. The game usually centers around getting your memory back or uncovering the events that lead to your confusion.
When the main protagonist is thrusted into a foreign dimension or alien world, usually due to a freak accident. The protagonist must then explore that world while trying to find a way back home.
The study of and search for remains of human culture and history (or that of other civilizations).
Anytime an ally comes in to help you in any way. This mechanic is most common in fighting games.
A mechanic used mainly in Japanese RPGs of both the action and turn-based variety.

A page describing the concept of class change, otherwise referred to as changing classes or class promotion. Characters are able to change classes, either growing in strength from one class to the next or as a means of changing a characters range of abilities entirely.
The cleric is a combination of priest, healer and holy warrior. The cleric is much akin to the paladin but tend to be more magic-oriented and less focused on melee combat.
The ability to combine different schools of magic or spells to create a new or enhanced effect. Sometimes this can be done with a partner.
Typically found in fighting games, combos are a series of strung-together moves.
DoT effects are most commonly found in Role Playing Games, and it describes the effects of a gameplay mechanic (often a magic spell) that causes incremental damage over a period of time such as a fire spell leaving someone to continually burn.
The concept of a helpless female character in desperate need of rescuing by the protagonist, in most cases from a villain, or from a form of impending doom.
Environments cycle between day and night, often with effects on other aspects of the game.
"Dear Diary, this entry is addressed to myself, given that soon I will likely suffer a bump to the head, drink a mysterious substance, be attacked by a psychic, or do one of many other things that can cause me to forget about what it is I'm writing right now."
Games that fit this category involve characters that can traverse different dimensions.
Carefully exploring a large, labyrinthine area full of enemies (i.e., a dungeon) in the hopes of finding treasure, leveling up, or completing a specific task. Having their roots in tabletop games, video game dungeon crawls are found almost exclusively in RPGs.
Experience Points are part of a character advancement system commonly found in RPGs. These points are generally gained by defeating an enemy or completing a task.
Fairies appear in many games, usually as a race that will assist players with magic. Fairies are almost exclusively female.
A popular class in many D&D based games, the Fighter can both dish it and take it!
It's not just for airplanes anymore: Game mascots and MMO players alike have taken to the skies. Players can use flight to quickly navigate large levels, find hidden items, or take opponents down.
