If you stare into the sun too long, Nathan, your movie enters into development hell.
If you stare into the sun too long, Nathan, your movie enters into development hell.

Hope springs eternal for the legion of Uncharted fans hoping Nathan Fillion will have a shot at playing the role of Nathan Drake on the silver screen for Sony's troubled adaptation of Naughty Dog's series. I expect an Internet petition to start up any moment now, as I've heard Internet petitions have a great history of working!

The latest news comes from Variety, reporting that director Neil Burger (The Illusionist) and most recently the Bradley Cooper vehicle Limitless. It's unclear whether Burger will tackle the script, whose first draft was crafted by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Conan the Barbarian...and Dylan Dog: Dead of Night).

The flick quickly ran into fan trouble when Sony appointed David O. Russell (The Fighter) to adapt Drake, with Mark Wahlberg filling the title role. Russell's take on Uncharted sounded remarkably different from the direction of the games, making Drake part of a traveling family of treasure hunters. Fans revolted.

No word yet on whether Wahlberg will stay, but you can probably already guess what fans are hoping for.

Also, does anyone really think this will ever get made?

    So here's the three things that make Nathan Drake into Nathan Drake;

Matinee idol looks (a pretty face, basically)

Youth and athleticism (believably able to do Drake-level stunts)

    Snarky sarcastic charm (oh Nathaniel)

With that, I propose; Ryan Reynolds. Man could hardly be crafted any more attractive, and his entire shtick until last year was being the snarky prick character.

Nathan Fillion simply doesn't work, because he only has one of those things; the charm. Maybe he gets a half a point for looks, but he sure isn't young or athletic.

@VinceNotVance: I'm not a big Bradley Cooper fan, but that at least hits all three points. Though I've never been charmed by Cooper, always thought his characters were regular ass pricks, not charming pricks.

At best, this will probably be on par with The Prince of Persia flick. I personally didn't enjoy that movie very much, but it wasn't made for fans of the games. If they just shoot Nathan Fillion stumbling around getting messed up and making quips to himself for 2 hours, I'll love it, and it'll bomb at the box office.

Videogame movie news just always brings me down. The only news you can possibly give me about a movie based on a videogame IP is "I saw the film, and it's good". Everything else that ever comes out just seems to change from month to month.

Of course this will be made because of the prepubescent gamers out there, who don't know any better, will beg and plead to get this up on the big screen - internet petitions and all. As we all know by now, whenever the minority of complainers speak, regardless of what it may be, all other voices get ignored. It's just how this industry works.

Besides, to think that this movie won't get made is simply a foolish notion.

I say we drop this whole movie. I liked it at first, but Nathan Fillion is the only guy to do it, and odds are, Hollywood won't let that happen.

I really don't want this movie to exist. It's going to be a significant downgrade from the games no matter what they do. Seriously, what can the Uncharted story gain from removing the interactivity?

In all honesty, I think Uncharted is one of the series that really leaves itself open for a film. The fact that the game is so successful because it does such a good job of feeling like a movie is a pretty decent testament to that fact, in my opinion. If you could take those characters and throw them into a good summer action movie (which, let's be honest, is what Uncharted is) then I think it could be pretty cool.

Now, this is making the huge assumption that someone writes a decent videogame movie obviously.

I don't understand how people can be so quick to write off a movie. So what -- their FIRST director left the project; who cares. It's not development hell until they've tried 4 or more times (usually in less than 2 years). Here's hoping something comes out of this attempt. So long as they toss O.Russell's script in the toilet, it has a shot at being good, delivering more Uncharted (always a good thing), and exposing the franchise to millions more people (which it deserves).

That being said, I still have two issues. One, will Uncharted be relevant then? It'll be "an off year" for the IP, no? Unless you count that Vita version, which will probably land next year.

Secondly, what the f*** is Sony Pictures Animation doing with all their free time? Why the sh** doesn't Naughty Dog or Insomniac or Sucker Punch go up to those idiots, punch them in the face for making "Open Season", and then get those dumba** time-wasters started on a Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter or Sly Cooper movie pronto! God, that's such an obvious first move for Sony, in terms of adapting their games for their movies. If you're going to make any of your games into movies,  how could you be ignoring your most movie-like franchises? Ratchet & Clank Future games have already looked liked Pixar movies for a few years now, and they've always had strong characters. Jesus Effin Christ; HOW COULD YOU SONY EXECS BE SO BLIND!?!

When will fanboys except that Nathan Fillion will never carry a 100+ movie? Hollywood is in the business of making money. I'd wager that 90% of America has no clue who Nathan Fillion is. Sure you may find him charming, and see him as a perfect fit for all of you cinematic fantasies, but the fact is you need to give up on that dream because it will never happen. It's just not logical.

He lacks the star-power, unfortunately. I'm not really sure he would be as great on-camera as he is for the voice-work. Bradley Cooper feels like a good fit.
