    Concept »

A term used to describe a game that has not officially been cancelled, but which has disappeared from the public view, and from which no word on development has been released in a long, long time.

    2 many years in development.
    2 many years in development.
As Duke Nukem Forever has been put out to pasture, we need to crown a new king of vaporware.  There are a number of games that are in development hell, but nothing can yet compare to the 13 years Duke Nukem Forever was in development.  Too Human had to be a bitch and get released... and yet it was still unpolished!  Eh, what can you do?

So who is the next DNF?  Alan Wake is a popular choice.  It's been 4 years since its debut, but several delays make me question whether Microsoft will ever release it.  Huxley is sometimes thrown around and Kirby Wii is a solid candidate, however I think the champion should currently be held by 2 Days to Vegas... and yeah I forgot this is still coming.  I remember seeing screenshots of this early last year, but there's been no news about the game since.  It looks like it has some potential, but I expect Grand Theft Auto V to be out before 2 Days to Vegas... if it's ever finished.

I think that Blizzard should revive StarCraft: Ghost. Then it can get canceled again.

Alan Wake is not a good choice, as Remedy almost always takes forever with their games.  And they're always mind-blowingly awesome. >:|

perhaps Project Hammer? They never officially canceled it. Also, there is a possibility that Sadness might be shown at E3 this year, but if not it is probably THE new vaporware

Seriously, wtf Dyack, going and releasing Too Human. Alan Wake does seem like the best candidate, though it seems like it may actually come out. J also has some good suggestions, I haven't heard about Sadness in ages.

The main reason I didn't add Sadness is because it's still more recent than Alan Wake and 2 Days to Vegas.  Sadness is definitely gonna be vaporware if it's not shown at E3.  Project H.A.M.M.E.R. is done and gone as far as I'm concerned.  I was looking forward to seeing that one, sadly.

Gran Turismo 4 Mobile is a pretty infamous piece of vaporware. It was apparently advertised as a potential launch title for the PSP. Years later, still no sign of it.

I think Alan Wake will come out. Maybe Splinter Cell conviction as that game has been talked about for ages yet next to nothing has been heard about it. It's made by Ubisoft though and is a big franchise so we'll have to here something about it eventually.

Did that really never get released? I was sure GT4 was released on the PSP. Well, that just shows you how much attention I pay to PSP releases.

I say we wait until after E3 to decide the next big vapourware game. A lot of the ideas were throwing around are rumoured (or are likely) to be shown at E3.

I remember 2 Days to Vegas being announced 4 years ago back in '05. I was stoked back then, now - not so much. If it comes out it might look pretty (probably not as pretty as those screenshots) but it wil most likely stink...

It was never OFFICALLY canceled. It's currently listed as suspended development, and probably hasn't been worked on in 4 years.

That was bought by Intel to be used in conjunction with the now canned consumer release of Larrabee superscalar CPU/GPU chipset.  I think it's still part of Larrabee SDK though.

Some games I've been tracking for several years that still aren't out but haven't been officially canceled:

    Carmageddon 4
    Chrome 2
    They
    Paperman
    Harker
    Dead Island
The Scourge Project (actually, I see they put up a new trailer in February...hmm...maybe this one is really happening.)
    The Hunt
    Shadow Harvest
The Crossing (IIRC, this is that Online-Single-Player FPS where the enemies in your SP campaign are real players.)
    Interstellar Marines (I.M. Project)
    Scorpion
    Parabellum
    Warhound
    Collapse

    Tiberium got cancelled. :(

Yeah, a lot of budget titles, but hey, that's the kind of stuff I track. :)

    @Mooshu: hiatus, lol.
and L.A. Noire looks SO badass. I can't wait to see how the whole facial expressions thing works out. For those who are unaware, Team Bondi (devs behind the game) are using a motion capture process that transfers all of the actor's performance DIRECTLY into the game. This is different from the motion capture commonly used now, which marks the skeletal structure of faces and then has animators draw on top of them. No artist will ever touch the performances made by the actors; they go directly in game so you see things like facial twitches that express lying, and so on. You'll also collect evidence organically (nothing is glowing; you have to figure things out for yourself).

I can't say I'm very postive about a game system which is dependent on the quality of all it's actors to actually be playable.
At the same time it would be kind of interesting to see how actors would respond to play testing of their performance's.
Will they call them back in to do it again if play testers aren't following whatever facial twitch the used in a scene?
