casual player base = dumb

I dont know why people get so offended when Eve is brought up. But I do know that every time I read a post like this, I get the feeling the person started playing Eve and couldn't figure out how to move their ship, so they quit in a huff and now must slam the game on threads just to... damn I dont even know why they do it.... maybe they paid $20 off the bat instead of trying the trial and are bitchy b/c they spent the money on a game that was over their heads, I don't know.

Key Fact/Lesson: If you don't like a game, don't play it.

Warning people that its difficult, I'm fine with that but bashing the game saying that its not as good as WoW just b/c it doesn't appeal to as many people ??? I just don't get it.

I've dabbled in EVE before and I absolutely loved it but the amount of time needed to get ahead in it was simply too much to ask of the free time I had. If I ever loose a couple of legs and an arm,  just sit my ass down in front of this thing and I'll be happy as.

Once you get into an actual full scale fleet engagement in 0.0, you'll never go back to empire.
Which is how long after you start playing? They should get you started with these kinds of battles right away methinks, or at least give you a taste; it would keep a lot more players playing. "
You can easily find a 0.0 corp/alliance that will take you in and teach you the ropes.  People don't realize that you can fit a warp scram on a frig and be effective in a fleet.  You will die, but if it's a decent corp, they should feed you free frigs like candy.  Then again, WoW has dumbified the MMORPG crowd.  They expect everything handed to them on a silver platter.  Heaven forbid you have to actually TRY and make some social interation with REAL PEOPLE in order to succeed.  Yes, mining and missions make you money, but if that's all you're doing, you're only playing 1% of the game. "
Because nothing says fun like flying a suicide tackle, dying in the first 10 seconds of a fight, and then hopefully hearing about it later from your corp?  No, to be able to pvp effectively in the game, you need to at least pay (though not necessarily play) for a couple months.  I don't expect things handed to me on a silver platter, my MMO roots are in FFXI which can generally be considered a pretty hardcore MMO where you have to work hard to get things, and one death can set you back a week of grinding.  Yes, in FFXI you had to make real social interactions with real people, because it was impossible (at least when I played) to level by yourself.  If you got a bad name for yourself on the server, you basically were finished.  The difference was that FFXI was fun from day 1.  The end-game content was certainly different from what you started with, but giving you fun from day 1 isn't handing you things on a silver platter.  It's making the game enjoyable.  You still have to work to reach the end game.

@invertReality: Good read. I can't really believe that I read all that. I myself am really interrested in EVE and the univerce of the game(and thats more then I can say of any other MMO out there right now) but won't be playing it because of a few reasons like I dont have that much spare time whit work and that time I usually spend playing some console game so that I can relax on the couch after a hard days work. And the weekends I spend drinking mostly.(not the whole weekend ofcourse)

But I really do respect a game that gives you free range to do almost whatever you want and reward you for actually doing something worth getting rewarded for.

EVE is a great game, but it takes great patience. I tried it out, but I didn't really have the time to devote for both it and school.

what a fantastic trailer.. what would have been awesome is sourcing REAL voices for the trailer (mayube they did? but i doubt it) Hearing that kind of dialoug is not uncommon in eve.. "hostiles in local!" brings back a lot of memories for old players.

I love the international spin they put on this, especially with the russians. When i used to play eve i fought RA and man they were tough bastards :)   I think i heard some aussie voices in there too

I started playing after a recommendation from a couple friends.  I didn't care the complexity of the game, so I quit.  Some people really enjoy it though.  Many of the players come off as elitists unfortunately.

@Branthog: Exactly, this is eve. A game the requires time to be spent in it. It like another life, you have to evolve your character, learn to use the items in the game. Ive been playing for like 4 years, and i still havent tried everything there is in it.

At those hating on the game and saying the trailer is nothing like what the gameplay is like better take a look at every other MMO in existance.

This is not a casual MMO like World of Warcraft, it doesn't hand you epics and awesome items on a stick, and the combat is deeply involved (though not twitch reaction). There is a heart pumping adrenaline packed game here, but it's only there where it should be.

You don't see WoW trailers of killing 20 bores, or mining ore, or doing any of the infinitely boring things there are to do in wow that you do all the time, why would there be?

EVE is  more than a space combat simulator, its more than an economic simulator, its more than politics, but it is every one of those. As a pilot of a highly advanced space craft, do you really think you'll be controlling things with a joystick like set up? Eve has adopted a more RTS like combat system, but in engagements of 10+ on each side things get very exciting. There is a highly deep combat system with incredibly versatile and complex mechanics.

Unlike WoW you wont get tossed into this by the game. You'll need to get there through your own effort and connections you make with other players.

I for one for my first year of playing, maybe even 2 years of playing

A) Never opened a spreadsheet, or ever cared about comparing prices.
B) Never put effort into caring too much about politics or soverignity

I put all of my effort into doing missions, making money from doing these missions which are very challenging and enjoying, far more complex and deep than anything World of Warcraft has to offer.

Then just in 2009 I joined up with a group of guys from another website and we formed our own corporation. I made a new character to start over with all of them. We've been all over the universe of eve, from the depths of 0.0 to high sec empire wars to setting up our own wormhole bases. We've been in many wars, made billions of isk, became very close friends and made a name for ourselves in the game.

No other MMO offers this kind of unified experience. Eve is what you make of it. If you play it and expect it to walk you through to the end like wow, hand you every epic and awesome pieces of gear for nothing, dumb down the mechanics of the pvp so that a 8 year old could be a pro at it, you might as well play WoW. Eve is not for you, its for those who want a lot of content and a lot of depth to everything they do in gaming. There is meaning in every action, a consequence to every click, the universe is yours, and its ever expanding, but how far it reaches is determined by how far you're willing to go.

Funny, because every fleet engagement I've been in has been either a total ganking or a 15 minute oh my god oh my god, I'm gonna die, type of engagement.  Once you get into an actual full scale fleet engagement in 0.0, you'll never go back to empire.  Too bad 90% of the EVE population never ventures into the wide beyond of 0.0 space.

For example, yesterday, we ran a 150 man POS bash, a 75 man enemy fleet jumped in to protect their POS, 20 minute battle ensued.

It's really a shame that this trailer is basically for a different game.  Because whatever game this is a trailer for, I'd love to play.

Most combat I've seen in eve is setting yourself to orbit at a target while you go make a sandwich.  The rest of the gameplay is much more interesting as an elaborate economic sim.

But that's what this game is.  it's an economic simulator, not a space mmo.  Fights like this just...don't exist.  You can't even move your ships around like they do in this trailer.

I recently unsubbed from Eve after playing for 4 years wanting to take a break. Although the trailer is nothing like the actual gameplay and the comments about slow game play, feeling like a second job etc, are justified it is still a great game and one of a kind. Give it a shot if you have a chance, most important thing is to find a good corporation (guild) to join. The people you meet make the game really.

I found my two week trial with EVE a very mixed experience. On the one hand I loved the unique feel, the complexity of the game and the fact that whether online or offline your character was constantly training their skills. However (and maybe this is just me) I also found that all the traveling and mining was very monotonous and that social interaction with other players was not something that came naturally. Perhaps if I spent more time with the game I'd be able to get more out of it but the subscription fees are very high for a game I'm not sure I'll like and I feel like however acclimatised I become to the world of EVE the repetitive tasks will always be repetitive tasks. Still, I can see why people love it.

Trailer looks cool but I imagine this game is like every other text-based online power game like Utopia where you have to use IRC and wake up at abnormal hours during the middle of the night to co-ordinate attacks with your team ...meh.

The trailers make the game look so exciting but when you actually get into it, its a complete overload of menus. I felt like I was playing menus with a graphical representation almost. I can still kinda see the appeal though to people looking for something like that, but I just didn't find it 'fun' in the slightest.

The thing the people who criticize this game don't understand is it's basically an economic sim in an online format. Prices on items change based on the actions of major corporations and intriguing conflicts for high value territory and resources. It's a power game so of course you have to start out mining or going on quests, you can't just start out running the universe but it's all based on the eventual goal of becoming powerful and to stake a claim to your part of the universe

Trailers like this are all I need from EVE. I just dont have the time, money, energy or attention span to dedicate to a game like this. Also the voice acting in that trailer sounds like its being done by actual players (or really bad voice acters) and I don't want to turn into that.
